  • Rane’s MP2015 rotary mixer was a big hit last year, and now they’ve followed up with a smaller and cheaper model, the MP2014. For the first full review, DJcityTV’s Mojaxx breaks down the 2014’s features and how it stacks up against its bigger brother.

    Bang on comment about the crossfader. I dj'ed on rotary Vestax PMC series for years, the 50 and the rackmounts, always had a crossfader plus the rotary blends... it was the best of both worlds and there's still nothing out there to replace what we had with the Vestax at an affordable price point.

      +fugitivephilo I'm here from there. currently have a pmc 250 im looking to replace..used to have the pmc25. I may walk away from the rane due to no crossfader. sometime you just need it.

      @@tonydeepdisco2417 It is definitely analog. However, the internals are not going to be the same quality as some of the more expensive rotary mixer (i.e., something like the Condesa rotaries). Even so, I really like the mixer's functionality.

    I'm a House DJ and if you are going to use a rotary mixer, no crossfaders, please. This mixer was not made for Hip Hop DJs. They have plenty of mixers to choose from. This is for that House DJ who love the classic rotary mixer over the newer ones. The late Frankie Knuckles used a rotary mixer. I also saw Chicago DJ Terry Hunter use one. I plan on learning how to use it for experience and comparison

    • @alanmodimages
      @alanmodimages 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends on what kind of "House" you are talking about. NYC based house, they used Urei's.... Club Spinning, Smooth Blends. But if you are talking original Hotmix Chicago Style House.... The types of mixes that Farley Jack Master Funk, Julian Jumpin Perez and Bad Boy Bill used to pull off on WBMX... then you need a Cross Fader, as original Chicago House incorporated breaks and scratching. There were really two styles out of Chicago. Frankie's and the Hotmix's done on the radio. Frankie only used a Rotary because he came from New York. I remember being in a Club in Toronto in 1987. The DJ was trying to play Chicago House with a Rotary. It's just not fast enough to pull off the breaks. So called "Modern" House has lost that edge and as a result some of it's original energy. Just call me an old school Detroit DJ, but House Music would not have gotten it's start without the Cross Fader.

    Hi Mojaxx. In terms of overall quality sound which do you like the most? pioneer djm S9 or rane mp 2014? Should we target this mixer as an audiophile one?

    • @Mojaxx
      @Mojaxx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tough call as I haven't A/B tested them together. This is definitely more transparent than the S9, so if you're looking for real audiophile-style clarity, this is superior.

  • @Heavie486
    @Heavie486 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The MP2014 is a disco, club and house mixer, for djs that don't need 4 channels to move the crowd. When you get this mixer, you allow the tracks to shine thru without all that showboat dj trickery. You let the frequency setting on the mixer inhance the sound to take the crowd on a ride with filters to apply a perfect blend between tracks. Mojaxx you did a review of other 2 or 3 channels rotary mixer sand I don't believe I seen either of them with crossfader. So why as a house dj yourself, would you want scratch or cut crossfader on a highend blend mixer. I watch some of your house mix videos and you never touch the crossfader. Besides if this mixer had a crossfader and the cr crossfader wasn't as sharp as rane's other scratch or clubb mixers. The mixer would be put down as a failure to anyone who purchase this mixer for scratching. If traktor can take the jog wheel from the S8 and S5 an djs still love it. I quite sure no one will miss a crossfader on the MP2014.
    Also, how come no one has put the Rane MP2015 up against the Allen & Heath DB4, as far as sound quality, punch and warmth. They both $2900 mixer and they both are digital mixers. I have the DB4 and many other mixers. I hate to spend $2900 for mp2015 and watch it collect dust like the DB4. I got my hands on the DJM-S9 for times I like cut and scratch.

    • @gelatinous6915
      @gelatinous6915 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The DB4 has a very powerful FX unit, the 2014 is literally just a two channel digital mixer with some knobs instead of faders

    • @Mojaxx
      @Mojaxx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I played a 5-hour-long 45 set on it... Again, the word is 'transparent'. It's very different from the sound of a Condesa, but not objectively better or worse.

      @BKJ-88 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MojaxxVDJ Thanks for the reply. I thought that would be the case. If I end up getting one I might pare it up with a 70's Marantz amp to thicken it up a bit. The functionality of the Rane compared to a traditional rotary is appealing.

    • @Reticuli
      @Reticuli 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's about as flat and accurate to the original signal as you're going to get on a DJ mixer that has 2nd-order channel isolators always in the path. Comparing a CDJ direct to a sound system to instead going through the MP2015, there's not a huge difference. It certainly doesn't make the sound colder, though possibly boosts subtle contrasts and fine transient detail, though it's possible that's just the TI SRC hardware chips and/or those isolators. The phono preamps have a similarly very clear, flat, not even remotely muddy sound.

    In my opinion, rotary is the best way to mix house, especially soulful/deep house. That said, I agree a crossfader can be handy - especially when mixing 7"/45s. Sometimes you need to cut those bad boys in short and sharp. The Formula Sound FF4.2R HAS a crossfader and when I'm looking at the MP2014/15 vs the FF4.2R - the Formula Sound becomes a strong contender against the Ranes. Whatever - at these prices, any rotary mixer is a pipe dream. I'll stick to my £220 Xone 62 for now...

    I wonder how these rotaries would sound compared to the new DJM-900nxs2 since the Pioneer is a 64bit DSP and these are 32bit DSP. I imagine there is more into play like the quality of the converters etc but since you Mojaxx have reviewed both I would like a comment on it. I had the DJM900nxs and now the nxs2 and to my perception the sound improvement is huge. I finally enjoy the mix, the blend on a Pioneer. However this is a mixer I bought with my crew. I am thinking in one for me at home. I was thinking in buying another NXS2 but this is smaller, and more suited for the kind of music I mix alone, and beautiful as well. So how is the sound compared to the NXS2 and how does it feel the actual moment of the mix on this one?

      I think it is (very) safe to say Pioneer mixers sound poor (at best). They are so called 'industry standard' only because they are/were riding the wave of 'CDJs taking over every DJ booth'.
      If you supply signal from CDJs - get only Denon (1600/1700)
      If from TTs and vinyl - get Rane (or the 100% analog A&Hs)
      hope this helps

      +ARKADIUSZ MIKINA I never liked the sound of the DJM-900nxs it always felt short. But the DJM-900nxs2 is much much better, however Rane has its reputation on sound, I have used the MP-2016 in the past and I would say it's been my favorite mixer, very forgiving. Because of the size and the soundcards (and the beauty) I am very attracted to the MP2014

      +ARKADIUSZ MIKINA but if reviews are to be believed, the 900nxs2 sounds almost as good as the mp2015. Pioneer have really nailed it this time, so you cant compare the old 900 with the new one. Its probably hard to believe but pioneer has really stepped up their sound game.

    InMusic needs to fix those gain/trim unities for the non-phono inputs. You're at 10 o'clock and it's close to clipping, and you shouldn't even be intentionally going into that top yellow, anyway, as it's 10dB of mystery headroom until clip. The DSP section may be float processing, but all the outputs, including the headphone jack, still has to be at fixed point and can't give you nearly unlimited headroom. I suspect they screwed up the gain staging to satisfy those with poorly-wired mono stick headphones who complained the headphone jacks weren't loud enough. The middle 'hold' section of the Rane meters should be kept around or just above the dBVu meter zero, anyway, and unlike what Rane's poor TH-cam video claimed, max is actually unity on their output knobs, not 7. I definitely can't agree with their philosophy of putting master volumes at less than max and giving any guest DJ control over the ultimate play-out volume with huge latitude.

    @Reticuli 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another thing I think's a little goofy is the cue system on this. You only have 2 channels. There are smarter and more intuitive ways of implimenting that than cue buttons.
    Agree they needed to keep the SPDIF inputs at this price point when my cheap PPD9000s have them. Come on. Feature bracketing BS.
    I would have also preferred one more knob on each channel and changing their functions a little. Top to bottom: LP, Freq, Mid amplitude, Freq, HP. Then put a resonance for the LP & HP filters to off to the side that both channels share. I could care less about a master Iso.
    Rane also needs to fix their videos on teaching people how to run their meters. People should not be intentionally going into that top yellow LED, as it's mystery land how close you are to the clip. Bounce AROUND the zero from track to track. The troughs should be persistance equally below the 0 and the tops are the peaks about equally above, obviously. At least the Ranes have responsive meters, unlike the DB4 and some of the old Stantons, where your average loudness seems to be the troughs.
    As I've said on the MP2015, the top yellow LED should have been orange or at least also red.

    Dose thus guy ever mix?! I am so tired of DJS that don't mix & just talk the old time. the video should be one part lecture one part mix. Explanation and then demonstration. We're DJS. It's what we do.
