    Ean, im a huge mixing/dj equipment fan, i spend hours sometimes on youtube watching reviews and even reviews of products i am certain ill never use them and i have to say, YOUR reviews are the best on youtube, the way your explain and speak of these products alone is a excellent skill you have that no other reviewer i ever watch can match, your channel is very special my friend, and was one of the very first things i felt when i got to explore it, those with sensibility can as well tell how much love and passion this channel has for the Art of mixing and the equipment around it in SPECIAL the ones you review, i just recently moved to Australia and i wish i knew of your channel when i ordered my S4,back in 2012 while in the US, thank you so much for your content thank you so much for the effort, always made as professionally as you can and it truly sets you apart from the others, your reviews have lead me to pick dj related items and i fully trust your judgement when you review them, much respect and much love for such amazing channel at no cost to us viewers, cheers - Daniel

    It's always great to watch how other people beatmatch. Everybody has their own trick. The tempo fader throw, the spindle pinch, the drag and sweep. That's great.

    • @Goosefraba100
      @Goosefraba100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      touching the record in any way is not ideal if it is bumping through the mains. using the fader to push or pull is how its done.

    • @nickloss2377
      @nickloss2377 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Goosefraba100 come again? this ain't a gramophone, dude. Touching a vinyl on the platter to slow it down or pushing it to speed it up is a perfectly harmless & efficient method to beat match. it's been done since the beginning; you just have to take care when doing it. doesn't damage the turntable (belt or DD), result in excess wear on the needle or (if I'm understanding what you're saying) increase or decrease the output level in the signal chain (from phono preamp to the main outputs on the mixer)..

    • @Goosefraba100
      @Goosefraba100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      nick loss ok. I will come again. I never said that it damages anything and pushing and pulling on the record is totally fine when the record is not playing through the mains while roughly setting it up. When it is playing though the mains, you mist avoid touching it due to it being clearly audible when pushing or pulling. Using the fader does it so that its imperceptible to the listener. Its next level stuff. No big deal if you dont know about it. Not everyone cares either. I have been spinning house and dnb since late 90s at raves.

    • @AudiauxAudio
      @AudiauxAudio 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Platter jog, pitch fader and maybe a little spindle nipple pinch are the only acceptable ways to beatmatch

  • @itimmy101
    @itimmy101 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Classic house heads would definitely agree using rotary knobs rather than using a fader...the feel is so much better! Its a good thing rane brought this mixer back to life. The old 19" mixer was epic though!

    I own a Xone 92 (an some other mixers) and had a A&H Xone:DB4, a DJM-900NXS2 and this MP2015 at the same time at home - guess who's the winner?
    The DJM-900NXS2 sounded very good and is a robust and versatile mixer with a lot of options and nice fx.
    The XoneDB4 sounded even better. The 4 dedicated fx-engines (with 8bar-looping) and switchable EQ/ISO/Filters per deck AND free assignable inputs: this is a brillant concept..... but has some serious quality and construction issues; I was really disappointed from A&H - it's a shame :_(
    Then the MP2015! Amazing, clear, differentiated, wide sound! And with the EQ- and ISO-Opitons properly used... Brilliant tool!
    I buyed it, and now really love this thing; best spend money on dj-gear ever!
    And again the main thing on the MP2015 is what you can, if properly used, hear!!!

      It's so interesting that this mixer was frowned upon by the Rotary community when it first came out. Now after a few years, it is a classic. I would tend to agree. It's little sister the MP2014 two channel version is even more hard to come by these days. Glad there are more options for Rotary these days. When the 2015 was released, it was really just Urei, Bozak, ARS and the Rane 2016. There were a few fader kits for the A&H S2 and 92. Then you had the Formula sound. I wish I had bought the 2016 before they discontinued it (Not sure why they did...). Anyway, thanks for your comparison on your mixers. I had been eying the DB4 as well, but heard there were issues.

    Fastest most detailed sounding mixer I've ever used. I'm sort of over getting more analog mixers, especially when no one is trying to make fully VCA or DCA units anymore.
    The iso not showing up in the headphone is an issue of phasing caused by all those crossovers. Use the session, I guess, if you are doing a headphone-only mix.
    The SPDIF inputs are way loud compared to where the trim/gain knobs are, especially on the SC5000s. Means I'm always below 3 on the knobs. The phono level is adjustable in the settings, so hopefully they add that for the other inputs later so the gain/trims aren't so touchy around their bottom.
    Also, Rane is 100% wrong about where the unity is on the master, session, and booth outputs. It's not 7. Unity is max on this.
    I highly recommend saving that last yellow LED as your emergency headroom and not intentionally running into it. Reason is there's 10dB of gain in that one yellow LED which is fine for absorbing accidental boost from the iso and/or the filters. If you're already in that top yellow, you have no idea how close to the red you are until you hit it. Just try to bounce symmetrically around the zero dBVU spot and you'll compensate pretty well for varying dynamics between tracks.
    I wish the knobs had a feel-able notch or nubbin like the old Urei knobs that Alpha is also using. Impossible to feel what's going on in the dark.
    The split mode sounds a bit louder than stereo mode, too, but many DJ mixers have that issue.

    I really love this mixer, my only complaint is that I wish it came in a 19 inch rack mountable mixer. I really hate those lay flat table mixers. I like my mixer angled just a lot more comfortable for hours of DJ fun. You tend to hunch your shoulders with the lay flat mixer which doesn't make a difference if your doing a hour long set but Dj for 8 to 10 hours and you want to cry. You neck starts to stiffen and your lower back starts to hurt. It's not a age thing even when I was younger got the same stiff neck hunching over these lay flat mixers. Once I got my hands on a rack mountable mixer it was heaven all knobs and faders were way easier to reach with out hunching over. If you never use a rack mountable mixer you don't know what your missing especially if your a club DJ and your use to working long hours. The Urei 1620 is still my favorite mixer of all time when it comes to house music.

Nowadays everything is so much easier for them, with auto beat matching & all, makes it so much easier for them! Its rare to come across a dj thats been mixing for a year or two and know the basics of pitch control WITHOUT LOOKING AT A SCREEN TO SEE IF YOUR IN SYNC. I've been dj'ing now foe 20 plus year & still love till this day!

    Hey Ean can I have your djm900 if you choose to switch mixers?
    On another note this mixer is beautiful, reminds me of a rotary mixer I had in the late 90s. They really are great and fun to mix with. So much comfort and ease with the rotary knobs. When mixing house or deep house it feels like you are setting up the launch sequence to a space ship or something lol they really are soo much fun to mix with. The amount of control you get on your volumes and eqs just can't be beat. It is definitely another level of control over the mix specially when compared to a regular fader mixer. I would personally would love to be able to afford such a beauty.
    But since at this moment in time since I can't afford one, can I have your djm900? Hehe

    Hello. I know it's an old video but I'd like to know 2 things as I'm about to buy a new mixer since my old one is slowly going to it's end...
    First: Is it an appropriate mixer for deep/progressive house. In my opinion, it is because I'm playing "rotary style" on my old ECLER Mac 90 but an expert's opinion is always better. I want to use a pedal as an external effect as well and the digital components look great as I'm playing both on Traktor (timecode vinyls) and actual vinyls.
    Second: Did you try the Radius 4 valve from Master Sounds and, if you did so, which one would be the best. I've seen several reviews on both models but I can't decide which on is the best choice. I think the main difference is that the Master Sound is full analog components...
    Thanks in advance for your reply.
    Cheers! :)

    Hey Ean, I love your videos, since i discovered them years ago.
    But why are you playing in the Red?
    I think you're a role model for a lot of starting young DJ's, like you were for me, but seeing you right now playing in the red is very dissapointing!!

  • @dsquareddan

    clipping the gains m8

    • @Ryan0751
      @Ryan0751 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Actually not. The mixer is designed to mix at +10 on the LED level numbers, which is 1 from the top. Sounds crazy, but I asked a Rane engineer and this is how it's designed to run. I guess they figured DJ's will red line anyway, so make that the default and adjust it in the firmware for the DSP to be the norm.

    • @dsquareddan
      @dsquareddan 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Ryan Ruel it's still better practice to leave headroom. running it right to the top leaves no room for any peaks that may come up. and he is actually running it past +10. at some parts in the video it goes into OL which is "Over Limit", so yes he is clipping. again, leave headroom. realistically the best practice is to run everything at 0dB and gain at the mixing console operated by the in house audio engineer before it goes to the crossovers & amplifiers of the club. Too many DJ's run every right to the top, or just beneath, leaving no headroom. when you are mixing 2 or more tracks together, their volumes sum together. If your master gain is already cranked your volume has no where left to go but into clipping. same if you add effects like delays & reverb, those add to the overall signal level. HEADROOM IS YOUR FRIEND

    • @Ryan0751
      @Ryan0751 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      D-Squared Normally I agree with you 1000%, but this mixer is a bit different. My reason for contacting Rane in the first place was that I was mixing strictly at 0dB, just like I usually do, and I found the headphone output to be too low. I was then told "No no, you want to be mixing at +10 on this mixer, that's how we set it up" - even at +10, you do have tons of headroom. This mixer has a ton of output and headroom, more than I've seen on any other mixer. If you go by the standard "0 is where you should be", you'll find the input gains to be super hot. The LED's and numbers on the mixer are simply guides, and again, I'm thinking they just decided to adjust the software on the DSP to work this way because that is how DJ's will use the mixer (running the LED's to the top), so they are effectively making it easier for DJ's to get the correct output, while still feeling like they have it cranked up. Trust me, at 0dB you won't be happy in this case... it's really too low! I've had a bunch of mixers over the years (DJM-900, Xone 92, Rane MP-2016), and this one is special!

      D-Squared yupz, i'm with you, that metering is off, despite what rane says, that its very hard to clip the master..ive seen a couple of more videos, and all channels are peaking one light above the red, although the master is not, how can you have a good readout of the levels? I really dont get it, if this is the way its build

    Is there any work around for making the isolator run into the headphones? So far after playing with the mixer, the isolator only comes out of the main mix/speakers. No headphone preview/output.

    hello, I just wanted to say that in the video they see the led bars that rise and fall .. when you press the various buttons .. and I think it is not a disturbance of the mixer in pressing the buttons .. but rather the points of turntables. .. but so doing someone can think that the mixer has problems .. I think better to redo the video with the cdj ... :-)
    or press the buttons very softly ..

    Hey djtt
    I am pretty new to beatmatching in vinyl, just bought my First pair of turntables, so i am just Learning The basics right now. So my question is: what does ean do with The pitchfader of The left deck? Why does he reset it to zero ans goes back to wehre it was? Thanks in advance

    • @DJTide
      @DJTide 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He is correcting his beat matching. When he speeds up the pitch and sets it to 0, he is speeding up the track similar to how if you push the platter or twist the spindle forward on the turntable. It's just another way of beat correcting.

    • @Ryan0751
      @Ryan0751 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You'll also notice he's not wearing any headphones. When you actual are listening carefully, you can move the pitch in even finer movements... sometimes just a millimeter or two up, hold it, then a millimeter or two back down. When you listen back to the mix, if you are good at it, you can't even hear the drift. It takes practice!

    • @FiSHY4D

    2:52 you say "what wouldn't be possible in digital land", you mean analog?
    Then "with faders you go all the way to the top all the time", that's not really true. Otherwise it would be a switch and not a fader. My problem with faders is they aren't sensitive enough and the buttons on a rotary would give you more control.
    But damn it they're expensive.
