The Magic of One Light with Joel Grimes

Joel Grimes has traveled the globe creating award winning images making his subjects look larger than life. Whether it is a celebrity or an everyday person, Joel believes that lighting plays a huge role in that process. The biggest challenge for photographers, learning lighting, is two fold: First, with so many options on the market, choosing the right strobe, modifier, etc… can be so overwhelming. Second, lighting is generally taught from a technical approach, making it way too complicated. We have engineers trying to teach artists, totally overlooking the creative process. This is a recipe for disaster.
Have you ever heard the acronym KISS, keep it simple stupid? Joel has this saying, “You can rock the world with one camera, one lens and one light”.
To learn lighting, you have to start by using one light. Master one light, and you can master ten lights. Follow Joel as he shows you how to create amazing portraits by using just one light.

I cent percent agree with his statement that one may not know the terminology of Lighting but to understand what works well is super important. Great lesson. He is one of the best.

There are many wonderful photographers out there who teach but I absolutely love watching and learning from Joel Grimes. His down to earth teaching style and his self deprecating humor makes him so relateable. I can't say thank you enough. I have gained so much knowledge in this relatively short video seminar.

Joel Grimes is an impeccable example of the value of practical execution. Take action. Action, action, action. Schooling is obviously extremely valuable, but we can have a way of fetishizing schooling today. To think that JOEL GRIMES doesn’t know what he’s talking about because he doesn’t keep up with the “brand names” of the lighting techniques is to express perfect ignorance, even arrogance. Phenomenal talk. Thanks for posting!

I am currently taking Joel’s course on photography lighting. He is a great teacher and I like the way he breaks stuff down. I have 13 years as a photographer and I’m always learning something new. Coming from a darkroom and film setting to now has always been a hard switch but I love photography and Joel Grimes reminds why I love what I do. I took off from photography from 2007 until 2017.

I used to belong to a camera club and they looked down at me because I didn't remember all of that so I quit. Out of all of those people in the club, there are maybe 10-15 people that are professional, earning money doing photography. I am one of maybe 5 that works as a full-time photographer.

hahaha so I'm a professional photographer, and I'm sort of changing fields of photography, and decided to go back to portraits with one light to test my self, and sort or reset bad habits built over a decade. There is something about the light you get from working with one light, and not having all the kicks and fills that just adds depth.

Correct me if I'm wrong but in regard to his "rembrandt-cross light" set up, the center point of his light is technically 45 degrees from the subject he just has the box feathered at an adjacent 90 degree angle, much like a window might be. So he isn't wrong in calling that rembrandt lighting and it would be possible for rembrandt to be in the room when painting with this set up.
