I've just discovered you. What a breath of fresh air. Totally different from all of the shouting and bright lights of the other photographers trying desperately to keep their heads above water. I look forward to digging into your archives. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ 🌴 📸
I've liked several of these talks, but Phil Sharp's work and philosophy struck me in a way only a handful of photographers' have. Thank you for making this.
I really like your interviews. Always interesting people, but there is something else too. You have a way of getting them talking from their heart. Looking forward to more of these interviews. Although I myself only do landscape, it gives me a lot looking and listening to these films. So thank you very much for doing this. 🙏😊
I cannot bring myself to call them head shots. I always say portraits - even if they are unambiguously head shots. Not sure why. I love the painterly quality of these portraits. Outstanding interview Sean.
Thanks for making this, Sean. Phil has been one of my favourite photographers for a while now, and I'm consistently impressed with and inspired by his work. It was great getting a more in depth and candid view of his process. Also, I'll add that your work too, not only your photography, but your way of viewing the world, forming thoughts and sharing them in an articulate way, has also been an inspiration to me. Thank you for always bringing more than simple photographs to your videos, but creating something truly human. It's beautiful.
Wow. Phil's portraits sure have a lot of character. And they do so despite their often super-shallow depth of field, which I would otherwise often dismiss as fashionable or gimmicky - he truly nails them. Love that approach of utilizing the ambient, and yet remaining curious about modifying it with artificial light. But most of all this insistence on taking your time, of letting your sitter get used to the camera, and of letting them use whatever they bring to the studio or location with minimal posing or direction. Thank you so much, Sean, for making this available to a wider public. It is truly inspirational.
He's really, really good. His portraits look so clean, uncomplicated (not simple) you just want to stop that uncontrollable scrolling and stop there for longer. Is one of my favourites on my feed
The level of mastery it takes to make portraits look deceptively natural and simple.... I was lucky to take one of his courses on Domestika which I really enjoyed. Very 'real', warm, and authentic.
I am not a photographer, but I love photography and I play with it a lot. When I need an inspiration I know I can come to your channel and I'll find a meaningful and delicate point of view, both from you and from the photographers you interview. I love this respectful way to get to know the subject and to see through the lens. Thank you!
Great insight and interview with Phil Sharp, all I can add are three quotes "Be influenced by everything, including the work of other photographers and artists, absorb it, pick the bones, steal what is good and make it your own. For it is your uniqueness that ultimately define your work. Anything less is nothing." - Bob Carlos Clark- "Most of my photos are grounded in people, I look for the unguarded moment, the essential soul peeking out, experience etched on a person's face." -Steve McCurry- and "If you wait, people will forget your camera and the soul will drift up into view." -Steve McCurry-
I certainly would not Phil Sharp's work as headshot photography mainly because headshots are primarily directed by an industries requirements. His work though is phenomenal portraiture. You absolutely connect with each subject and become intrigued by their stories. His portraiture style is unique and refreshing. Thanks Sean for bringing us closer to his work.
Wonderful video - thanks for making it! I especially like the non-technical advice about giving space to the sitter to express what their feeling, without trying to impose false emotions and poses. And being patient - so important.
It really hit me when he mentioned that he played music during shoots. I was doing an engagement shoot a few weeks ago and began playing music and ask the couple to dance and have fun to it. he thing is, even after the dancing bit I decided to leave music playing. It changed the entire vibe of the shoot, the couple became more relaxed, fun, and themselves. Music is now going to be a key aspect of what I do.
Really enjoyed this video. There is so much content on the technical aspects of photography but very little on the interaction between the photographer and subject. It's fascinating. More like this please!
Thank you for this interview. Turning fear of the camera into emotional expression is an art form. Wonderful to see someone doing it right before our eyes.
Yeah Sean. Nicely done. You made it easy to appreciate Phil's work. The animated portrait that you created from your interview and careful editing is lovely too.
Thank you for doing this. Loved it. Love Phil. I had the pleasure of talking with him a couple of years ago and he is an amazing photographer. I love his process.
Mr. Sharp's work is amazing and I've enjoyed it for a while now. If you're interested in seeing more he has a course that is often on sale for a very reasonable amount.
Thank you Sean for featuring Phil Sharp. I love his work so much. And love your channel -- it stands out for the quality and range of subjects. Always look forward to a new video from you.
Thank you, Sean, for not only an inspirational interview, but the way you edit. It truly captivates your audience's attention, well at least mine, who seems to have a bit of an attention disorder.
Thank you for making this video Sean, it was both impactful and enlightening on what Phil Sharp said about the headshot photos. I for one will take this to my next photoshoot, and just let the model be her
Can I like this any more times? Ive been admiring Phil's work for years. Your interview captured more insight than anything else I have seen on him and his work. slowing down and getting a "portrait" vs a "headshot"... Really great!
This aspect of portrait photography that make people accept and even like features of themselves they’d usually try not to show.. I find this incredibly powerful and Mr. Sharp made this aspect very compelling! It’s a truly wonderful and rich genre. Your interview style and editing here is spot on! I can’t thank you enough for these inspiring videos, Sean. You and the people you’re speaking with are a force that keeps me interested in photography, even if I don’t have a lot of time.
Wow, Sean, this video really reonates with me. I'm not at Phil's level as a portrait photographer, but I approach my shoots quite similarly. And I am also looking for the same thing in my portraits. It occurred to me I often don't take enough time to allow for the magical portrait moment to occur. In my dance shoots I do, so really quite silly of me. I'm inspired to take my portraiture to the next level: thank you so much!
Great interview. Phil Sharp’s portraits are some of the best out there in my opinion. I took his course on Domestika and would recommend it to anyone interested in improving their portraiture.
The camera captures the thoughts of the subject. The photographer/director etc creates a space for those thoughts. Both go beyond technical ability or access to technology. Even if those things matter, it’s just as important to access the soul of the work as the clarity of its expression.
Just Came across this and I’m more than grateful and appreciative for all the Info and Insights. Became a Fan and Follower. Amazing Work You’ve Got Mr.Phil Sharp👌🔥🔥
An enjoyable, educational insight.I am a wheelchair and some what disabled person who is restricted to certain genre of photography. Portrait not one sadly. I do however, enjoy your channel. Your flow of speech is both rhythmic and easy to listen and absorb.Thankyou
I always try and take something from your videos. Sometimes I watch over and over again so I don’t miss something and everything has a chance to digest if I focus on a single point in one viewing.
Sean, I always like your videos and the thought that goes into them, this one has been really inspiring. Phil's thing about taking his time and letting the person be who they are i.e. don't direct them is exactly how I like to take portrait photgraphs. Music is an extra element that I will try out.
Thanks Sean for creating this video. I've been a huge fan of Phil's work for a very long time. I've even reached out to him a few times but never got a reply. This video was a great insight to the mind of a great photographer.
Thanks for another interesting video. I particularly appreciate your unusual style of conducting an interview, where we don't hear your questions at all. Just the responses.
It's a pretty standard device from Netflix documentaries. I just nicked it:) Plus, you hear from me plenty in other videos and I like that these can just be the photographers thoughts without my interjections.
I so wish, I could fall in love with creating portraits of the human species. I love food photography so much - more so, taking an individual thing i.e. fruit or veggie and bring out its personality, robe and details. I treat fruit, veggies etc., almost like a human as I see how beautiful and unique they are.
I get that you don't need any specific equipment to achieve honest portraits, but for sure they enhance and allow the look achieved in the pictures shown. Great work and ethos.
Amazing work, from both Phil and yourself. I've been a huge fan of Phil for a long time, and totally get where he is coming from. Thank you Sean, your work is truly inspirational.
Inspiring. It’s interesting how as we age as photographers we let go of control. And he’s a shining example of letting go and getting out of the way of the camera… am wondering what the little piece of glass that is attached to the lens… is it one of those filters that softens and blurs in specific parts of the frame? For a non technical video I am strangely curious…
I've loved Phil's work for a long time. He has this ability to make every single person look like the most beautiful person I've ever seen, and I have no idea how he does it.
beautiful interview. i always get sad when i create awesome interesting portraits with clients, and they want only the "boring" ones or even reject the interesting ones. I just send them and hope in a couple years they can look at themselves as someone special with a personality of their own.
This was simply beautiful to watch! As a portrait photographer he spoke liquid velvet to me, thank you for this interview
I've just discovered you.
What a breath of fresh air. Totally different from all of the shouting and bright lights of the other photographers trying desperately to keep their heads above water.
I look forward to digging into your archives.

Phil Sharp is one of my absolute favorites. His style is so appealing and distinctive.

Thoroughly interesting especially the psychological approaches. Thank you Sean for illuminating Phil's beautiful work
The level of mastery it takes to make portraits look deceptively natural and simple....
I was lucky to take one of his courses on Domestika which I really enjoyed. Very 'real', warm, and authentic.
Wow just WOW Phil's work is STUNNING. Thank you Sean for highlighting his work. What a gifted photographer.

Been finding youtube a bit bland and repetitive lately but this was a really enjoyable video. Great stuff.

This was inspiring. Thank you for introducing Phil, he now has a new follower.
Brilliant video Sean, so much soul in his photos! Thank you for sharing this with us.
Inspiring and beautifully captured

Appreciate all the work you put into these thoughtful, beautiful and helpful videos. Well done Sean!
I didn't know his photography before, omg, what a brilliant pictures! I'm watching it third time and my mouth is just as open!
Your final narrative of the occurring in the studio made cry when I saw the last portrait. Thanks for bringing this episode up.
This aspect of portrait photography that make people accept and even like features of themselves they’d usually try not to show.. I find this incredibly powerful and Mr. Sharp made this aspect very compelling! It’s a truly wonderful and rich genre.

Wow, this is the second interview of Phil in the last month. Great interview, thank you! 🍀

Great to hear about and see Phil’s processes, such an authentic and organic artistic approach. Great stuff!
Love this and his work. Did a workshop from him, every portrait photographer should watch this. Good that you witness this ❤
Excellent, thank you. One of the most valuable photography interviews I have seen.
I always try and take something from your videos. Sometimes I watch over and over again so I don’t miss something and everything has a chance to digest if I focus on a single point in one viewing.

So powerful and the video clips were works of art
This is the video I needed to see right now. Very inspiring. Thanks Sean!

Phil Sharp!! Amazing you’ve got him on. Thank you!
This is a brilliant body of work. It is refreshing to see these authentic portraits. Thank you, Sean, for making this video.
Allowing it to be it. Allowing one to be one’s self. That’s Phil’s thing.
Another great video and an inspiring photographer. The last bit at the end, where you tell what happened in the studio, was so beautiful as well.
Thanks Sean for chearing this and all the rest for our inspiration. Sorry for my french from Québec 😉
Amazing video Sean like always and what an inspiration Phil is to us all. Two amazing photographers in one place. 🤲
Thank you so much for introducing his work and philosophy to us. Love these interviews.
So much to gain from watching this piece of work... 20 mins I didn't know I needed
It's always a pleasure watching your clips...
Wonderful!! Thank you, very insightful and inspiring. Love the philosophical undertones 🙏
Helpful and useful video Sean - I want to do some portraits for a project and that’s given me practical and useful approaches. Thanks

@@seantuck Thank you, Sean.
such a great artist.
Great insight into Phil's artisitic processes and general thoughts about portraiture...
Interesting film with insightful vision and thoughts of Phil Sharp. And with beautiful photographs ! Thanks for posting this !
You’d think modeling for the Pre-Raphaelites would suffice, but here she is, still sitting for yet another artist.
I admire his work, so inspiring.
I get that you don't need any specific equipment to achieve honest portraits, but for sure they enhance and allow the look achieved in the pictures shown. Great work and ethos.
wow, love this guys work.
Amazing work, from both Phil and yourself. I've been a huge fan of Phil for a long time, and totally get where he is coming from.
Thank you Sean, your work is truly inspirational.
Thanks!
Wow, that was awesome!
Really enjoy his headshots. They don't make his models look amazing, but they capture who they are. Not a lot of headshot photographer do this.
Inspiring. It’s interesting how as we age as photographers we let go of control. And he’s a shining example of letting go and getting out of the way of the camera… am wondering what the little piece of glass that is attached to the lens… is it one of those filters that softens and blurs in specific parts of the frame? Grateful for this. Phil is special, man.
Great insights about a very interesting practitioner , thanks
Sean, just brilliant, thank you!❤
One of the best I’ve seen on portraiture. Thank you!
That was the video I needed to see. Inspiring stuff.
This was avery interesting conversation as well as enlightening
Oh wow seeing this the night before a head shots shoot! Amazing advice, thank you so much.
One of your best videos, keep creating such stuff mate.
that photograph in the end made me burst into tears. it literally shook me to the core. this is so deep!!
