It's cartridge tilting which is when you slightly pull up one side of a cart. This also can permanently damage your console &/or game so I advise not trying this ever

If I were to guess why the game keeps crashing, it'd be because one of the ROMs is corrupt or because the dev board is drawing too much power from the console and causing the console to be unstable.
The Genesis/Megadrive is powered by two LM7805s which under ideal conditions would give you 10W of output power. But since the heatsink for them is just a sheet of metal, they get hot real quick and lose the ability to output their full power rating.
Possible! Those things sure do know how to turn electricity into heat! :)

My theory:
The chips on this card are a very, very, VERY old model. Not only that, the dev card should not work one bit on a normal sega genesis...it should give a message on the screen that tells you to insert the card in a developer console in order to test it, according to research done on the sonic 1 developer cards. Instead it bypasses this screen due to a faulty chip and therefore attempts to run the game, only the same faulty chip that lets the console bypass the screen also contains the signal to tell the genesis the proper codeset to recall as well as the 2nd primary rex-coding chip.
I have heard rumours that the amount of night and day difference is unbelievable, but I am not sure. Some dev units look very similar except for extra ports in the rear, other units are a way oversized computer tower that takes too complicated of a setup to play one game on it. It really depends.
One question: What chip would that be exactly?

I knew nothing about this and I was tired and started theorizing, and not only that but kept going...dammit.
Looking back at this, this is just a damaged developer cartridge IMO. It's reading data and such somewhat, but is highly unstable and needs either chip replacement or resoldering from the looks of it's behaviour.

I have a theory to why
Due to us expecting the console/game to work fine, we don’t think the game or the console is gonna suddenly give an error and fail. When it does it out of nowhere, it could probably scare some people.

@@eclairence it's weird. The Sega chant sounds normal, but the rest of the game is definitely slowed down a bit. And, for some reason, the pitch isn't being affected by the slowed tempo.

I know this comment is five years old but anyways I think the why the sega logo doesn't get corrupted is because the sega logo screen loads when you start up the console and also the sega logo is not part of the actual game.

I grew up on emulators. Then I got a Euro Mega Drive for myself... and was like... this is *off*... blue streak crawls by? 🤷♀️

I've never seen a sega dev card screw up so much that it edits the insides of the Systems Main RAM. Thats having fun with Exodus emulator for no reason.
Also hidden fact: If This "Illegal Instruction" or "Address Error" message appears just press "C" it might work, it it still says "Illegal Instruction" or changes to an "Address Error" or "Line 1111 Emulator" or "Line 1010 Emulator" Just press "C" a couple of times for to get the game running again. If the error handler loops in the same address number. Type the command you always do on a MS-DOS PC to reload the rom in the dev kit.

Unfortunately it was done using development hardware, so there's nothing to dump! It was just using a ROM from the No-Intro set! Closet you could probably get would be a circuit-bent Mega Drive 🙃

the game audio is slow its scary
PAL is 50Hz. NTSC is 60Hz. The game was made in NTSC at the start (i think) and then they slowed it down for PAL regions.
Yep we sure were unlucky. I remember playing Sonic 1 on an emulator and it felt like it was really BLAST PROCESSED (due to the 60Hz NTSC-U-ness). Then I got a Mega Drive PAL and was devastated at how slow it felt... the take off is like walking in quicksand for three seconds. Kills me everytime!
Shane McRetro my 1990 PAL Mega Drive 1 VA4 (non-TMSS, HDG) is 60Hz modded and I actually play on a CRT (ex-BBC JVC broadcast monitor); I use a RGB SCART to S-video converter. And I'm in Wales, so there's no excuse hahaha
