Bunting doesnt use 12g anymore he uses 18g
he transitioned to 18g from 12g not too many years ago
I started with 25 g,
then I tried 18 g (in order to play soft points),
then 21 g,
23 g (I played a very long time with)
Then back to 21 g in order to be able to play soft and steel points with the same weight. (Very long time to)
I Tried 19 g, thiner to get more 180's.
And now I'm happy with 22g in soft and steel points.
My conclusion : After a little time of adaptation to switch, (the grouping is always the same, but depending on the weight, I arrive lower or higher) and I'm still bad.
Sounds like you've been on quite the dart weight journey! 🎯 Switching weights is like dating-you’ve got to try a few to find 'the one.' 😂 The grouping consistency you mentioned is a solid foundation. Maybe now it's less about weight and more about refining your throw. Remember, even the 'bad' days are progress. Keep at it-you’ll be smashing 180s in no time!
@@DartsDecoded Hi, You are right, weight is no longer important today. Everything can suit me with a little adaptation. Today I had fun throwing away all the dart sets. I noticed that the changes were almost non-existent. On the other hand, I used the same flights and shafts (k-flex) for all of them. So I have the impression that what matters most is having the right flight and shaft duo. Also, one day I radically changed my grip. I had a 4-finger rear grip and now like a pencil like Phil Taylor. I am no longer bothered by the shape and length of the barrel.
This has not changed my fundamental problem: I send a third of the darts too far to the left, in the 5. If I make fast throws and without concentration I can accumulate series of 5 without difficulty. I can't find a lasting solution.
Thank you so much. I’ve been into darts for 2 years and have still struggled finding my perfect dart. This will help a lot. By the way, I have a straight hand, long barrel and shaft, I grip the back of the dart and I have a heavy dart with a loose grip
I tried all kind of different kind of weights and I’m still going back to my 33gr front loaded !
I use Target 23g 975 barrel, with Cosmo Duralumin #3 spin shaft, Shape style flights, and 35mm Nano Swiss Point
Ok Phil
This has helped me so much.
That’s awesome to hear! 🎯 Knowing it’s made a difference makes our day. Keep practicing, stay consistent, and those darts will keep flying true. :-)
Barbados. Winston Cadogan I play with 26
Always continually move up in weights as much as possible. Nobody ever mentions deflection, and basic physics tells you that the heavier the dart = less deflection = greater accuracy.
You're absolutely right-dart weight does play a role in deflection! 🎯 Heavier darts are less likely to be pushed off course by other darts on the board, which can lead to tighter groupings and potentially greater accuracy.
However, it's important to balance weight with your throw style:
If a dart is too heavy, it can affect your release and make your arm tire faster during longer games.
Some players find lighter darts easier to control and more comfortable for a fluid throw.
Ultimately, it's about finding the weight that suits your mechanics while keeping deflection in mind. Heavier isn’t always better, but it can definitely reduce deflection for some players. Happy experimenting!
hey, i was just wondering about something. so ive been playing for about 5 months now, yet i still cant really get anything together. im uncomfortable in all 3 aspects (stance, throw, grip), is this normal? i dont know if im just a slow learner or something but its very frustrating🤣 im still hitting 9s and 6s when going for 20 sometimes
Everyone is different but you could be in your head to much, over thinking every aspect instead of just throwing the dart. Ive done the same thing before. Try thinking less about the 3 things you mentioned and just focus on visualizing your dart on a rope from your hand to the target. Try to just do what feels natural with the other stuff. Of course this is just my opinion from my experience. As with anything practice and repetition are key. Hope this helps...
Mine is 24 now , I’ll try 22 next week
seems like you have a very inconsistent release - perhaps try a scalloped dart (e.g winmau whitlocks silver) to make sure you grip it in the same area (ideally at the darts' centre of gravity) for all your throws.
Had the same issue, I still hit a lot of 26s, but at least managed to get rid of the "darts flying left right and centre" problem :) Finding the right barrell shape is more important than finding the perfect weight IMO.
Hey! It’s totally normal to feel a bit all over the place when you’re starting out. Darts can be tricky to master, and finding your groove with stance, throw, and grip takes time. It’s like trying to juggle for the first time-sometimes you just need a bit of practice and patience to get everything clicking.
Hitting 9s and 6s when aiming for 20 shows you’ve got potential; it’s just a matter of fine-tuning your technique. Keep practicing, stay positive, and don’t be too hard on yourself. Everyone goes through a phase of trial and error when learning a new skill. Before you know it, those frustrations will turn into consistent hits. Keep at it and enjoy the journey! 🎯
Touch memory is important here. What I mean by that is the following . . .
I throw using the 3 finger grip (thumb, index and middle). I use a scalloped dart and rest the scallop on my thumb just using the 2 fingers for accuracy
When I go into the 5, I have the feeling on my middle finger as the last touch memory so I know I need to release the middle finger from the dart at the same time or the middle finger will push the dart left (if you are right handed of course). Same goes for the thumb pushing the dart right.
If you have ever played football and hit a sweet volley, the feeling on the top of your foot is a 'touch memory' and I find correcting errors easier once you know what is causing you to push your darts left or right.
Try different chucks. Like Bunting throws at an angle from the side of his neck/ear area, where other players throw from under their chin. If you choose the latter, hold the dart in front of you and align the dart between your eyes and the target number
Some players throw from memory (Michael Smith) and some aim (Chizzy). Find what suits you best and stick with it. Ive had the same darts for 40 years but looking at having a change soon because when Im off it, Im off it!
I just threw my sons darts for the fist time in absolutely ages, a shorter and straight barrel and hit a 140 first 3!
Is there no rule regarding the weight?
Good question! According to the official rules, darts can weigh up to 50 grams. However, most players, including pros, typically use darts between 18 and 26 grams. Heavier darts can offer more stability, but they require more control and strength. Experimenting is key to finding the weight that works best for your throw style. 🎯
21 g
Gold Widow 24G
everyone has their comfortable weight mine is 28 grams full steel with crisscross grip shortened stems.
Sounds like you’ve got your setup dialed in! 🎯 28 grams with a crisscross grip and shortened stems is a solid choice-comfort is everything when it comes to darts.
I use 24 not sure if its made for me. But the darts go in the board fine. Im darting for 4 months. I have an av of 40-45
Sounds like you're making great progress in just four months! An average of 40-45 is impressive. If the 24g darts are working well for you and your darts are sticking to the board, it might be a good fit for now. Sometimes, it's more about how comfortable you feel with your equipment than the specific weight. Keep practicing and see how your game evolves-if you ever feel like experimenting with different weights or styles, you'll find what suits you best. Keep up the good work! 🎯👍
@@DartsDecoded my av is 45-50 basic rn somtimes it spikes above 60 . I have the littler gen 1 24g with 41mm points. I have trown 9 180s so far and i feel like thats it. For me. In december i wil go to my first darts tournement. And i wil see from there

I play 24-23g
Length off barrel is as important as weight
I think your bang on on this, barrel length is so over looked as it is directly related to the balance point of the dart for every individuals throw
I used to find too heavy would slip back in my fingers on release. Too light took too much effort.
Great observation! 🎯 Finding the right dart weight is all about balance-literally! If it’s too heavy and slips on release, try adjusting your grip or going slightly lighter. If it’s too light and feels like extra effort, a medium weight (around 22-26g) might be your sweet spot. Keep experimenting-you’re already on the right track by paying attention to how they feel in your hand.
Stephen Bunting 18gram
i use to use 21g now i use 22g but im going to try a 23g
23g here.
I play with 26
I really love playing Dart, But I don't have one HAHA
TLDR: Suprisingly dart wright is a personal preference
What is a dart wright?
@DavidOgborn typo dart weight
Doesn't matter with me, them 26s are still there
Ah, the infamous 26s-every dart player’s frenemy! 😂 Don’t sweat it; even the pros hit them now and then. Just think of it as a friendly reminder that there’s always room for one more practice session. You'll turn those 26s into ton-plus scores soon enough! 🎯
