Helping A College Girl Get HOME For CHRISTMAS

- Everyone is starting to head out on their Christmas treks home and Eric's cousin was no different. Her Subaru Impreza has different plans for Christmas. The red coolant light (the car has no temp gauge) popped up on the dash recently and we were called into to see if it was okay to drive home. We're going to go check the car out, see if we can find any serious problems, and if it will make the 3 hour drive home.

The shortest day of the year falls on the 21st of December, which, is Winter Solstice.
Right. But it sets earliest on 12/10. By 12/21, the afternoon has already gained a few minutes. Sunrise improvement comes later.
Can we just take a second to recognize JR for his tireless uploads of material. Great content. Best TH-camr.
No
There are a great number of incredible TH-camrs out there covering all sorts of subjects. JR is over of them.
YES WE CAN you fruit loop@@seanm3ify
Two things: 1. Its super nice to see you helping someone out, its situations like that where bad shops usually ream innocent people. 2. It is kinda nice it broke and she asked a week in advance. Usually in my experience these things are "Oh its 6pm on Friday and I wanna leave 10am Saturday". I also kinda like she asked Eric to take a look over it rather than just dumping coolant in and potentially making a bad situation worse.
Great seeing nice people still exist
It’s like the start of a samcrac video 😭😭

JR, Eric is such a good dude man. Glad you’ve surrounded yourself with good people. Wrenching is always better with a good fella to help.
The shortest day of the year (Winter Solstice) is: Thu, Dec 21, 2023, 9:27 p.m. Central Time.
My son goes to college in upstate New York. He is home in Southern California for Christmas. I understand how parents feel about having family together for holidays. Thank you for your humanity.
That Impreza still used a “EJ” series engine. Check the bottom side of the engine for headgasket leaks. They are notorious on the EJ25. Also inspect the upper rad hose neck on the rad for cracking. They are know. For cracking and eventually breaking off. For a brand that’s known for HG issues why in the world would they get rid of a gauge and use 2 stupid lights for engine/coolant temperature.
hey JR... i paused this at 24 sec mark to write this .... if she says "i have no money to pay you, is there some other way " i think you uploaded to the wrong platform... here we go....

I had to read this a couple of times to note that she did not say this…

Yeah, but being a Subaru, she might swing for the other team, or so I'm told. Lol
Great helping out Eric and his cousin. That's the spirit.
usually the headgasket leak externally on those. Oil will drip from the heads. could be intakes or slight water pump leak if nothing getting into the engine. I have a 2.5 and its very common with higher mileage.
John and Eric, bless you heart for lending a helping hand to someone in need!
Subaru Owner here: Very likely looking at head gasket issues. If not before, now that it has been overheated it is very likely. I had very intermittent overheating for over a year (even the gas tester wouldn't show it at first) before it got bad enough that I had to have the head gaskets done. I tried a bunch of different things to solve it, but it would be fixed for a month or 4 then fail again. It would let just a small amount of combustion gas into the cooling system and eventually build up enough gas that it would overflow a huge amount of coolant at once then overheat.
Even with the rocker delete option, that F150 is super clean for $3000. Score!
I work at a university and my daughter is starting college next year. I want to thank for helping out the college student. College is a critical stage in the lives of many young adults and small issue can grow into bigger problem, being so far away from home.
College is a waste of money, with way too much administrative bloat. No one cares about your opinion. You can’t hack it in the real world.
The info screen on the headliner above the rearview mirror can be fixed by simply reflowing the solder joints on the circuit board, adding some solder to a few points would be a good idea as well. I just did the same repair to a customer's 2001 excursion.
Solid deed helping the college student. I was thinking the thermostat was being temperamental. Excellent content!
Those 2.5L non-turbo engines from that era blow head gaskets so often there was a local Jiffy Lube (!!!) that was advertising flat rate head gasket jobs on Subaru 2.5L engines for cheap for several years. This is Subaru country though due to all the Californians that move here thinking they'll be invincible in the snow (they're not).
With that year and that many miles and that cleanliness, it must be nice to feel that bought something someone took care of
You are awesome JRGO. God bless you both. The Christmas spirit is truly alive in you.
Fact: the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern hemisphere is what's known as the Winter Equinox, also known as December 21, coincidentally the first official day of Winter.
My dads Subaru did the same thing. No coolant and oil looked good. Told him to top up the coolant and see what happens. 2 months later no coolant again so he took it in and they told him head gaskets need to get done. So it got all done and its been good for a year now. Guess we will see on this one.
Also nice truck, i have the same one. The broken compass just need some solder joints reflowed. Pretty easy job.
This is an older Subaru. With the old 2.5L. These are the engines that have the issue with head gasket. Many of the cars that showed up on the dealer that I worked had the coolant being burned over time. My suggestion is to use the head gasket testing fluid.
Thanks JR Subarus are nice. Thank You JR I appreciate you.
My only Subaru was an 88' GL Turbo wagon. Had it at my dad's lake property, at Christmas time, and on my way home it blew both timing belts. There I was stranded with no one like JR in sight. It had 52K miles at that time. Warranty expired at 50K. Dealership was cool and covered 1/2 of my repair cost.
I know this might sound weird, but I clean my air filter for cold air intake for my truck in the dishwasher. It has worked great for the last 6 years. NO problems at all and it gets spotless.
You never fail to worsen my sleep schedule by these late upload times! (Almost 1:00 am for me)

Thanks for posting. Make sure you put correct Subaru coolant (blue stuff) I ran the universal green for a little to long. I went after market radiator as well. Had to replace with genuine subaru part as well.
Thought I would ask about your sister's 1987? Camry Wagon. It still going strong? You do any project around it?
@WatchJrGo
Ive seen those rust prevention devices years ago. The idea was to create a weak electric current throughout the metal of the vehicle. This current interferes with the charge between the metal and oxygen, thus stopping rust from forming. It's BS otherwise every vehicle in the rust belt would have one LOL 🤣🤣
Subarus usually dont make milkshakes when the head gaskets pop. They tend to burble and puke out the overflow reservoir. Leakdown test is your friend to diagnose these.
Subaru makes a "conditioner" for the coolant system that you're supposed to put in any time you open the coolant system. Even after checking tightness on all the clamps after doing water pump and hoses on my 07 Legacy, it dribbled out until I use the conditioner.
Pressure test won't find a head gasket failure. Could be losing coolant slowly that way over time. I mean, it is a subaru. Run a block test.
Head gasket blues
That F-150 reminds me of my buddy's old truck. 03 F-150 (thankfully one of the last years before the 3v), bought it from the second owner with 126,000 miles on it for $7k in 2015. He put 160,000 miles on that old girl in 6 years, got hit in the rear and bent the frame 2 years before she gave up the ghost. Original engine and trans still ran like a dream, but electrical failures just killed it, wasn't worth chasing down the gremlins. Ended up buying a 1990 Toyota Camry v6 with 76,000 miles from his grandad for $500.
I drive a similar truck 2wd supercrew 4.6 got just over 302k on mine I love it
SUGGESTION jrgo, lets see an update on eric 'manly man' truck when u fix it...engine clean, valve covers, cv boot, etc.
Hard to believe the miles...wow. Is his truck diesel or gas and will you do all the fluids change? Can you film it? Thx and great vids
Hi I have worked at Autovalue parts stores for 30+ years and Partsmaster is our house brand. Yes 67060 will interchange. The last time that they awarded a contract for Partsmaster filters the company that makes them did a massive consolidation of numbers. They all work but we lost a lot of customers because of it ,just for the reason you pointed out. Big vs small hard to sell. Dave T
Eric should pull the intake hose off the TB and clean the inside of the TB and the butterfly. They tend to get gunked up and sticky from PCV fumes. Even though the TB has/had a sticker that says, "Do not clean", or something like that.
That box with the flashing lights was a Snake Oil dealer add on. Our local Mega dealer used to add those and the window ID eching to all cars then claim they were giving a $1000 advantage over other dealers even if you paid the same price.
The Shortest Day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere is December-21st and the Longest Day of the Year is June-21st.
Switch the Months for The Southern Hemisphere, ie. Longest Day is the 21st of December, Shortest Day is the 21st of June. Based on the Meteorological Calendar.
Earliest sunset is 12/10. Latest sunrise is 1/6. On 12/21 the two curves are closest together.
December 10 or so is when the sun sets at the earliest time all year. It is my version of the winter solstice. The latest sunrise isn't until Epiphany or so, January 6. Winter begins on 12/21 or 12/22, the shortest day of the year, when the two curves are closest together. But who cares about sunrise time? I start feeling better when the sun starts to set later again, which is now.
Very common the fitting for the axle vent goes through and holds the brake line splitter. I’m surprised it’s the first time you saw this with all the vehicles you have had. Very common
From single moms to college students, JR is your man!
Auto saver systems was a dealer installed rust corrosion inhibitor. Basically the idea was to put a current through the metal of the vehicle to prevent it from corrosion. The sales pinch was that they do something similar on submarines and navel chips. Not sure if it's true but that was the pitch. A electronic version of rust proofing. I think it's bogus.
Yes i had a boss with a Mercedes 450 SL and it had one on it. And unbelievably it didn't have rust anywhere despite being over 25 years old. Not even the exhaust!
I think they do something like that on Navy ships
Break apart an old hard drive and remove the rare earth magnets. Stick a magnet to the drain bolt. It should stay there by itself. When changing the oil, remove the magnetic. The bolt should be magnetized enough to keep any ferrous metal (not copper).
That box is for electronic rust proofing for lack of better term. Technically the science supports this, but anyone relying on this to keep a vehicle rust free in the saltbelt will be driving swiss cheese in a few years.
Also as a salt belter the lack of rust on the 22 year old Ford makes me want to be sick.
The shortest day is the 21 of December, or where I'm at, the longest day
Earliest sunset is 12/10. Latest sunrise is 1/6. On 12/21 the two curves are closest together.
You're such a gentleman!
Subarus are famous for the overflow hose from the radiator to the plastic expansion bottle leaking on the radiator side just under the radiator cap. Plastic tie will fix it for 5c.
Is this the last channel of the Midwest automotive TH-camrs that hasn’t sold out and shilled themselves into oblivion?
Those old supercrews were the ones to get. 5.4L 2v, 4R100, 9.75" rear. Not surprised it's still going strong.
Same thing just happened to the mother in laws corolla. Just topped up coolent and good to go.
In my 2017 Crosstrek, that clear plastic coolant reservoir is _nearly_ empty when the car is cold (the little coolant in it is below the "Low" line). The reservoir fills up when the car is hot.
I have no idea how this system works - but was assured by my Subaru mechanic that this is the way it's supposed to be.
That’s how it is on my girlfriends pontiac if you fill it to the cold fill line when the engine is hot it fills all the way up like there’s no air left I don’t get it, I leave it a tad but under the fill line for that reason it scares me it looks like it’s going to blow the cap or bottle up.
I had a 97 f-150,those seats are absolutely crazy insanely comfortable
Shortest day of the year is December 21st i know this because its my birthday. Yay me!
I love shine down.
My ex had one of those trucks, thier decent. Intake manifold gaskets like to leak so beware of that. That k&n filter will wreak havok with that mass air flow sensor by lightly oil coating the wire, best to put factory filter back in its place. Enjoyed the video.
Head gasket head gasket head gasket Subaru's are big time head gasket love you show
Yea 98-01... doesn't really happen like the internet likes to claim
Be sure to run the Heater, to get coolant into the whole system!
He did mention he ran the defroster so that should be enough to get coolant into the heater core?
You do know that it does not matter right? coolant flows through the heater core rather you have it on or off.
depends on the car, some cars dont do that. @@robsdeviceunknown
That was the first year they dropped the temp gauge, scared the crap out of me since my ex wife overheated 2 Subarus before this one. I have this exact year and color Impreza and it’s been the best Subaru I’ve owned 5 years running. Also mine lived in central PA for 10 years and only has surface rust on the chassis, no body rust.
The hose on the brake line is the differential vent.
Do you have safety inspections in your State? That is a differential vent at the brake lines. It's a nipple that threads into the tube.
Those rotten rockers would never pass a safety in Ontario Canada.
December 21 is always the shortest day of the year and June 21 is always the longest day of the year.
the rear end is vented thru that hollow bolt that holds the rear brake hose, need to always vent a axle assembly
That parts master filter looks like it’s based on the FL-500 filter which is the new and improved filter ford switched to starting with 3v. Supposedly it’s better all around than the FL-820S but the fact that it’s a cheap brand filter probably negates all that lol
Hopefully the car was just low on antifreeze it happens...
Tell Eric to use the dang sunroof I've got almost 300,000 on my Toyota sienna and use the sunroof all the time even though it's a ford opening the sunroof shouldn't be a scary thing 😂🤣
That piece serves two separate purposes. It acts as a vent or the differential separately from acting as T fitting for the rear brake lines.
Years ago, they promoted those anti-corosion systems. It's my understanding that in a car, it is completely useless. But they are supposed to work in watercraft.
Glad that the Subaru doesn’t appear to have a blown head gasket or at least not yet. The compass can be easily fixed on the F-150. Probably just needs a new compass module or the pixel screen needs replacing.
Reflow the solder joints. Fixes it almost every time.
@@cptnzippy even better!
whenever there is a pinion seal or axle seal leak make sure the breather is free before firing up the parts cannon. I've fixed quite a few leaks by just blowing out the vent tube
The compass and temp on the roof stop working cause the sun hitting the roof heats up the circuit board. If you take it apart you can repair it by re-soldering it.
Dec 21 is the winter solstice
Yeah, I knew it wasn't today 😂
What the news should have reported is that this is the earliest sunset of the year. The shortest day is the solstice.
It's technology that they use in salt mining it basically makes the car like Teflon but with electricity
The shortest day of the year is the winter solstice. December 21st. The sun is as far south as it can go and starts heading north again (in the sky). It's actually the tilt of the earth. 🌎
12/10 is earliest sunset. 1/6 is latest sunrise. 12/21 is when the curves are closest together. I'm more interested in the sunset number.
That’s mighty nice of JR! Good on you dude! You can’t kill a boxer engine. Eric got a damn good deal on that truck!
lmao what? because they destroy themselves before you can?
@@djsoniccI don’t own a Subaru bro.
Eric's new truck is a nice find.
December 22 is the shortest day. Vernal Equinox.
Well let's hope the head gasket is actually good. Sister PT cruiser that used to be moms needs a radiator now but it's just slowly seeping so she knows to check the level and top it off when it gets low enough. Don't feel like pulling it yet and have the Amazon link saved for a well reviewed replacement. We generally don't get rust bucket vehicles here in Portland Oregon area because we generally never use salt on the roads and we most years don't get huge cold snaps.
Please let us know if the ground under the driver side inner fender was the culprit ! Poor ground could be messing with lots of items! 👍🇨🇦
The 200,000 miles written under the hood twice was likely when the timing chain was done it’s common to put a sticker or write it down under the hood when it’s changed
My old forester just decides to make my coolant disappear sometimes. There will never be any sign of a leak and BAM it'll pretty much all be gone on the second drive of day 723
I liked the the days when you used to go out and buy a turd of a vehicle, spend a little money on it and then sell it and make a lot of money! They were the days when the channel was always something cool and interesting...

Watch JR rescue a damsel in distress!! hahaha
Now the only thing I want is to see the sunroof open. What a teaser:)
If Zack has a 21 or newer f150 the 4wd (IWE) is electric now. And if he has a 22 or newer that’s a lariat and up they have eliminated the iwe’s completely. The axles are always connected.
I think they make oil filter relocation kits for those trucks.
How can you have a “damsel in distress” video, without showing the damsel? 😊
He clearly did though. She's black, and Japanese. And is leaking coolant. Also she has non-traditional cylinder orientation
Maybe she didn't want to be in the video because of all the creeps.
Erics chatty tonight!
As a Subaru owner, the amount of times my oil has burned to 0 or coolant has evaped (because I didn’t check it) is too high. Hasn’t died yet. 125k miles on a 2019. Still not happy it happens though.
Coolant does just evaporate. Check for head gasket leaks.
