    I personally don't like Chained to the rhythm. It sounds like it's trying too hard to be socially conscious and it just comes of as fake and contrived. And I agree the "wasted zombie" line is pretty cringe.

      Sorry but i don't see how was Katy "trying hard" on Chaines To The Rhythm.
      How is she trying to be something while she is being herself?
      If she wants to say something on a song then she wants to.

      Monica LW Because it's about our society and the fact that we all see things the wrong way and that we don't witness what's really in front of us. For one, society is being way too negative about every little thing, which looking at these TH-cam comments, is very accurate.

      J Panda look at her live stream , it'll change your whole perspective about her and the album. I didn't even care about her before that 73 hour live stream lol, but the hate that's surrounding her by just releasing something as innocent as music is getting a little too hard on the internet. Just like they took Miley Cyrus apart in 2013 and Britney way before that, it's not right to do that to another human being who has done virtually nothing wrong to you except, god forbid, released some music that she worked 2 years on. I get it, genres aren't for everyone but the hate online and in the press is getting ridicilous.

    • @macion9481
      @macion9481 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      So I just looked up what the cover is about and I read Katy's statement about the "eye in the mouth" thing. I mean, I guess it makes sense. I don't really like how it looks, haha. But hopefully this thread doesn't turn into something crazy, I was just wondering why the album cover was so weird.

    • @justafidemyself
      @justafidemyself 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No but i was just talking in general here in these comments, it's getting crazy out of hand yo with the negativity haha, i can't believe how mindless people have become on the internet without really thinking about the fact that at the end of the day, katy's just a human being. I watched a brutally honest therapy session on her livestream yesterday where she talked about negativity online and how it destroys her. It's really something to watch & i'm sure it took a lot of guts to do that live on TH-cam.

      Nicholas Katsikas The ironic thing is that Hey Hey Hey is my favorite song of the album. I do think the lyrics are dumb but I don't really care much about lyrics. The only time I won't listen to something due to lyrics is if it super gross and sexual. But I thought katies album was very good overall. So I'm alone I guess.

    This is how Katy Perry's albums have always been. Some pretty amazing singles, backed with some filler tracks to produce sales in the form of albums. Except this time that concept didn't work here, all 3 singles flopped and she definitely seemed rushed for release.
    Personally, the 3 singles, Hey Hey Hey, Roulette, and the title track were good, but the rest was definitely some shit.

    This is her worst album to date. I like a couple songs but none of them have that replay value to them like her others, and as a whole the album is just boring. All the songs sounds pretty much the same, and the lyrics/choruses fall flat. Who knew Katy needed Dr. Luke so badly.

    • @Turigemo
      @Turigemo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ms. Nikita Katy's non-single songs are way better than her huge hits. Only people looking for huge hits think this album sucks. The ones who really knew Katy love it. I'm glad it is not full of bombastic songs. She got more introspective here and sonically, it is a better experience than just having songs to dance to...

    As a pretty big Katy Perry fan (Teenage Dream may be my favorite modern pop album out there) I agree with most of your points. Katy Perry is very cheesy and not necessarily the smartest pop, which is honestly kind of her appeal to me. I feel like it shows her personality off well, which is very goofy and lighthearted. That all being said, this album didn't show much of her personality, which is that one thing I like so much about her and her music. The whole self realized pop thing is fine with me if it were presented more like Chained to the Rhythm (which I think is one of her best songs in recent years, I WISH more of the album was like this) But the way it comes off here is just very dry, even on some of the production (a surprise from someone like Max Martin) Definitely some gems but overall probably her weakest album. And that's coming from someone who has a poster of her above my bed!
    I like your review though and thought you were very fair with criticism, as you are most of the time, and I agree with about 90% of what you said. I think Hey Hey Hey could actually be a hit if the chorus were a bit bigger, too.

    I totally agree with the filler songs! I'm a huge Katycat but this album only has like 4 real standout songs and the rest are complete fillers. Also I feel like there is no coherence to the album, it doesn't fit together very nicely, I'm hoping this is her artpop/dead pets era and her next album she'll have her Joanne moment

    • @Luke-ft5ow

    Guilty as charged, I enjoyed several singles from Perry's first 2 albums; I Kissed a Girl, Hot N Cold, Waking Up In Vegas, California Girls, Teenage Dream, Last Friday Night, all guilty pleasures of mine, I know they're mediocre lazily-written pandery Pop songs, but they were fun and enjoyable to me. However, everything afterwards (the watered-down boring as shit Firework sequel Roar, the not-as-big-or-deep-as-it-thinks-it-is sloppy 808-driven Dark Horse, and of course all the shit off this album) have been amongst some of the worst Pop songs of this entire decade for me.
    Based on her new singles' poor chart performances, and the bad PR she's been getting this year so far (her Obama comment, her 2013 Miley-tier makeover except Miley's was actually believable, everything connected to Bon Appetite, etc.), I think 2017 will be the last we hear from Katy Perry for a while, good fucking riddance.

    She wants to be someone she's not so bad. I remember when she was promoting the prism album and she was saying "this album will be my darkest album" and I was like okay something a bit interesting. Nope. That album was all fillers and you could easily tell which songs were made into single and were ready for the radio and that's the same with this album. But she tried to be way to artistic. I feel like she really is having an identity crisis or something. She wants to be Miley Cyrus. She definitely wants Lady Gaga's creativity she's trying way to hard to be so many different things and it's just awkward at this point.

      Pop artists have had a hard time this year staying relevant this year. Bruno Mars's 24k Magic lasted about 3 months this year. Jolene by Lady Gaga vanished from the public mind a month after its release. This album might not last that long. I'm guessing the albums by Lorde and Lana Del Rey will be dead out of the gate.

    In defense of Teenage Dream, while the singles are overplayed, the record as a whole isn’t complete garbage like Witness. I don’t think that it’s a complete stretch to say that Witness KILLED Katy Perry’s career because she hasn’t dominated the charts ever since the record dropped five years ago.

    Apart from Chained to the rhythm I like only Bon Appetit (well, not really "like", more "it's stuck in my head" thing, plus it's still catchier than half of the album). Being boring it's definitely its beggest crime.

    I admit I bought this thing following a heavy promotion she did for the album. Mea culpa, I fell for all the 'enlightened' talk only to find out that this album was basically a bag of everything: a couple of good songs, some attempts to be original and then boring stuff I won't give a second listen. I think something is going on with Katy Perry, she's not in a good place emotionally and her music reflects that. Hopefully she'll get over it, she had some great songs in the past but this just doesn't cut it.

  • @wisemandaryn5953
    @wisemandaryn5953 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Now that we've heard the album, in terms of the music itself, it provides greater context towards the tunes chosen to be singles. Initially I would definitely describe the first 3 singles, or promo singles if you'd rather, to be something that I wouldn't necessary avoid - but also not something I would take the time to search out. For me, my opinion changed hearing the entire album -- and it appears that aside from 2 or 3 down tempo tracks that aren't half-bad, the singles represent some of the most accessible material on the entire project. In the end, it's kind of a mixed bag at best. Katy is a talented performer and I'm sure that she isn't fixated on chart success or radio activity to the degree that her label is. Taking into account the hype, the promotion & the expectations, the album will initially be quite successful. But based on the songs themselves, I can definitely see 'Witness' as an unsustainable effort. I think that even though it fits a lot of Katy's personality, all of the immense amount of promo going on right now is almost in an effort to connect in a way that the label knows the album won't -- at least not compared to her previous work.

    I have a feeling that this album will grow on me over time, but it definitely wasn't the summertime pop soundtrack I was looking for. I'm appreciative of Perry's push for social consciousness and political awareness, especially as a sort of "role model" for younger generations. Unfortunately, for me at this point in time and with a couple of listen throughs of the album, I think she fell short of what she advertised. Thank you for review. I feel a lot more validated in my thoughts. I like that you pointed out her lyrics are cliche and predictable. I guess I would have thought at this point in her career we could have heard more complex lyrics and writing. However, maybe that's just not her M.O. and we might never get it. I think she touches on complexity in a couple of songs on this album but never fully runs after the concepts she wants to explore (or says she does on be album). Oh well. Back to listening to After Laughter and reminiscing about the past withTaylor Swift's catalogue on Spotify.

    I'm gonna weigh in. I'm a huge KatyCat, but this album is disappointing. I knew from the start this album would be a flop and its so disappointing. I'm hoping that her next album will be way better. I liked "Miss You More" and "Save as Draft" and the rest is okay to me but not great.

    That's why I wanna write a new album. Hopefully I could save and recover the music industry to what it once was before it has fallen to shambles. This album sounds like a great example of the fall of the music industry, and I didn't wanna listen to it because I thought it would be a waste of time. So hopefully, you could prepare for a new EXCITING album with different flavors instead of being the same old bland thing like Witness is. Watch out! The Antagonist is coming to conquer the lame industry, and make a new era of the industry of what used to be AMAZING!

    Summed up my thoughts on this album perfectly Perry at her best delivers catchy fun pop singles but at her worst can come off as horrendously bland and on this album more often than not she just comes off as bored and disinterested and the production mimics that to with mostly repetitive synth lines making almost the whole middle part of the album just blend together and only picks up with the last THREE tracks! I liked maybe five or six songs off this album but when you had fours years to make a great "socially conscious" album we expect more than just generic filler tracks no pulse 5/10.

    When I read the Spotify promo for this album; "conscious pop" I was oh damn that's a pretty high bar (said with sarcasm)
    Well regardless of how pandering and boring this album was
    What are some of your favourite Katy Perry songs person reading this comment?
    My top three are
    *1.The one that got away*
    because it reminds of a girl I almost got close too 😢
    *2.Firework*
    Because of the Interview
    (Kim Jong Un likes it)and liked it when it came out
    *3.Roar*
    I don't care if you think this is the worst song I could pick, but hold on... their was this girl (another one) who I thought was stunning!
    Like seriously, if you saw this girl you'd feel love at first sight...anyway I was on a trip and she came from another town and one of the songs that came on the radio was Roar
    At that moment I guess you could say that was my way of remembering her 😭

    You can definitely tell the instrumentals were improved largely compared to her previous stuff. I think it improved because of the collabs but her vocals still sound like the way they did on her first debut. I don't hear any improvement, wittiness or her personality coming through. Anyway, I'm glad that mainstream musicians and bands are "experimenting" once they got famous enough not to care what they put out. Let's just hope she continues exploring and this is not just a publicity stunt like Miley pulled before going back to boring safe country music.

    You surely need to listen to it a few more times to get all the good and bad parts clearer.
    Swish Swish was fun, Witness was good. Deja Vu, Pendulum, Power and Tsunami was really good.
    Notting great here but I mean it was not that bad. You just can't enjoy the good parts of it becouse you don't give enought time to see the song structures some good melodies and qualities to this album. I challenge you to listen to it again with my opinions in your mind and give another chance to the songs I mentioned. You will surely have a better idea about the album after listening to it again especially if you challenge youself to like it.
    It was a 6 out of 10 for me not very good but at least I know what was good about it and not you just talked about the bad things about it and didn't talked about everything. Becouse of that It was not a great review. There is albums that are so bad but has realy good songs in them and you will never be able to see them if you don't aproach them with a open-mind. I hope you can take my criticism and be better at what you do

    Definetely another guy who haven't listened the entire album, just listened to it once and gave an opinion a 5 year old child could give. You didn't mention a new product, better quality of the sound and her maturity. This album is no more the Katy Perry talks about partying and really makes a difference talking about topics which are relevant. The lyrics are DEFINETELY cool. The cover? It's just a work of art. I'm sorry, but Witness is one of the albums I've been listening to the entire 2017, so it's not so bad as you said.
