My review of pop superstar Katy Perry’s utterly lifeless sixth album "Smile". This is NOT what the doctor called for in 2020 of all years, so let’s boil down what made her faux positivity so unbearably generic. You deserve better from pop.

Someone said that PRISM was supposed to be a 'darker' pop album but her label thought that was not a good idea. I wonder what her career project would be like if she chose to do a dark "reputation" era route.

I think Katy doesn't know what to do anymore. I think she has been little lost ever since her traumatic experience of brutal criticism when she released 'Witness'. This album was generic with a few good tracks like 'Tucked' 'Cry about it later' and 'Never really over' . I think Katy needed to take a step back with this album before she can move forward.

It's kinda funny how Katy Perry and Lady GaGa first took off and become megastars around the same time. Because, looking at this year (since they've both now released albums during it), it's interesting to see how their careers have turned out.
GaGa had a bit of a slow decline for a little bit with some of her albums, yet still had a solid enough fan following to keep her modestly popular. Her Las Vegas residency did pretty well too, even though that's normally something reserved for legacy acts. Then A Star Is Born happened, and it completely revitalized her career, helped her win an Oscar for Best Original Song (and get a nomination for Best Actress). And now Chromatica has continued on the hotstreak of some of her better albums, even during the Pandemic.
With Katy Perry, she had hit after hit after hit for a while. Then somewhere at the latter part of the 2010's, her career started really declining. There was the whole "Purposeful Pop" thing she tried doing with that WITNESS album, which didn't work out well for her. She's had her stint as a judge on the American Idol revival, with the only real thing of notice happening there is that controversy where she kissed that contestant who hadn't been kissed before (and was saving his first kiss). None of her singles have come close to the success of her peak stuff (especially during the Teenage Dream era), and some people are even wondering if there was anything redeeming about her to begin with. I didn't even know she had an album coming out until I saw it on iTunes.
In any case, if there is something going on in Katy's personal life that she's struggling with (like any mental health issues), I wish her the best with it and hope she gets past it in the end. I guess we'll have to see what happens with her.

I personally enjoyed the album. It was a fun album. Was it safe? Yes! Does it sound like it could have come from the Teenage Dream era? Yes! Do I still like the album? Yes! Songs like Cry About It Later and Not The End Of The World I think are really good. Even though we don't see her change her sound on this album doesn't mean it's god awful like some have said. People have complained that "this is safe" or "she needs to try something new" but when she made Witness you gave her shit because she changed and she was "fake", the album wasn't that bad and didn't warrant the hatred it got. I give it a 7/10

just because someone does something different doesn’t mean it’s automatically good lmao. she changed her sound a lil but that doesn’t mean we’re supposed to say “wow amazing album!!” i applaud katy for the risk she took but witness was very messy and was horrible lyrically despite good production. smile....is incredibly lifeless. it has absolutely no personality. like....it’s sad. she almost sounds bored. katy can truly make good pop music but it’s like she’s lost now. obviously if you like the album that’s 100% fine but your reasoning as to why people didn’t like witness was weird to me.

@@ashtonb7931 Personally I feel like people are taking this way too seriously. Not every song has to have some deep meaning behind it. Also I feel like Witness is discredited a lot because of the lyrics but just because one aspect of a work sucks doesn't mean it's completely bad. Imo if Katy took a few songs from Witness and Smile and mixed the two albums together, that would have been so good but these two works are good on their own too. We also can't ignore the fact that this woman is obviously pregnant and her team is at fault. They should have pulled through this together but instead the productions and roll out was messed up and unfortunatelly these mess ups fall on Katy's shoulders even though there's not much she could have done...

    • @MrArianit500

@@ashtonb7931 yeah I know people shouldn't be singing her praises because she changed and evolved and absolutely people are entitled to their own opinion on how they like an album, art is subjective after all. However, I was mainly stating that the main criticism for this album was that it was "safe" and nothing different but when she did so something different with Witness it was met with heavy criticism because it was a different sound. I was just stating that I find it weird that people were calling for the "old Katy" when Witness dropped but when she actually went back to her old sound a bit on songs like "Never Really Over", "Smile" and "Tucked" they question why is she going back and not moving forward. That's all.

V R songs don’t have to be deep to be good lyrically. look at don’t start now by dua lipa. that’s an amazing pop song. it has great lyrics and production. now when katy writes stuff like “your words are like chinese water torture”, “if i’m not evolving, i’m just another robot taking up oxygen”, “you suck my hope up in a vacuum”, basically all of bon appetit, and so many more, it starts to go downhill very fast. witness is a messy album all around. it has some good songs and a lot of the production is good but overall it’s not a good project

Reading some Katy Cats' comments trying to defend this album saying things like: "She is depressed" and "she works really hard while being pregnant" don't give you a valid reason why she decided to make this album so generic, boring, and forgettable. Taylor Swift was hated by the whole world in 2017 and got depression and eating disorder but she still can make a solid album reputation. The behind story of your fave singer cannot affect any of these reviews unless those stories were there being told in an album.

This is it, as far as know, Katy's previous album was not well received and people were attacking her, her problem was that she never addressed those things, like if you're being hated worldwide you have to make an statement as big as that hate to stop it, but she did nothing, that was key with Taylor, she was getting tons of hate so she made a whole era about it, Katy just looked away and decided to make Smile

I guess i’m one of few that like the album, i loved Witness it was misunderstood. I’ve liked all her past albums I just never held her at the same standards after Teenage Dream. Not many artists have more than 1 or 2 massive albums, it makes it harder for her, because she is so famous to do anything outside of huge hits, I think she’s tired of following all the rules and making albums that’s expected from people. She’s doing what she wants, she’ll always have her fanbase she’ll just weed out some of the one’s that only liked her for big hits.

Well it looks like her career in the mainstream is over and I can’t say that hurts my feelings (I mean I’ll freely admit to liking some of her hits as a kid, but now I’m just extremely indifferent on all of her material), the only artist that was big in the 2000s/early 2010s that’s still churning out quality and hits at the same is Taylor Swift and only because of her recent album, I wouldn’t have mentioned her if it wasn’t for Folklore, I was very lukewarm on Lover and hated Reputation. Yeah you still have those artists that are still consistently killing it like Paramore but it’s not like they got any hits off After Laughter and I still haven’t forgiven you all for that. Also since a lot of these formerly big stars apparently claim that they don’t care about numbers anymore, they should take cues from some of my favorite bands (Sum 41 for example) and move to an independent label, why the hell would you let industry hacks tell you what you can or can’t make if you truly don’t care if your album sells well and you’re just in it for the music

Since I first heard the single Smile and RIH my last interest I had for Katy's music was gone so I had no expectations from this album. Still I was surprised for the most part.
I really dig "Cry about it later", "Never really over", "Not the end of the world" and I don't even mind "Champagne problems". The lyrics and production fits with Katy's brand and what she has put out in her better days and doesn't really feel forced to follow specific trends like Witness or even certain songs of Chromatica by lady gaga (but that's another conversation). I feel like this album should be released instead of Witness. For someone who has only listened to her popular singles in the past and never a whole album I feel like there's this idea that she once made bangers cause we sort of "grew up with her" as a young ,pop relevant singer. But really for me the lyric quality (at least in the songs I mentioned) compared to "skinny dipping in the dark etc." from LFN or hot n cold hasn't really changed. I dare say Dr Luke is responsible for most of those hits. And we gotta accept that we can't have another teenage dream the same way we can't have a new blank space.

I just can't think of someone less relevant in 2020 than Katy Perry. I am literally so tired of us all talking about her like she's still one of the Pop Girls because her music hasn't been good for 7 years. Like literally 2013 when she released Prism was the last time any of us enjoyed her music so what is the point of hounding in that it's bad in 2020?? Duh. She hit her peak in 2010 and died in 2013 as pop music got edgier and darker and less carefree. Duh. Now she's just a generic has been sadly trying to cling onto a glory that is over. So what?

I miss the fun and silly Katy Perry who made pop bangers like "Hot 'n' Cold" and "Teenage Dream", "Smile" seems like an amalgamation of sounds from "Prism" and " Witness" which is why it sounds like a wreck sound wise, it genuinely made me sad that Katy thinks songs like "It's Not the End of the World" and "What Makes a Woman" is going to get her mainstream acclaim. Also somebody needs to tell Katy that trap beats aren't a good fit for her vocals, she generally sounds awful over a trap beat, wish she'd learnt that after bloody "Dark Horse" in 2014!

I absolutely adore this album, to the point I stayed up til 3am looping it and sobbing because I loved it. I admit, there may be a little bit of bias because I have loved Katy since I was 7 years old, and that was during her first album as Katy Perry. I loved witness too, and I know this is a VERY unpopular opinion but Teenage Dream is her weakest album for me, but I love everything she has ever put out. Her voice is so pretty. I love the danciness of Teary Eyes and the trap beat of Not The End Of The World which is my personal favourite track. I don't even like pop music, I'm more into modern post-hardcore/ metalcore, and a little bit of pop-punk and emo, but Katy is genuinely one of my favourite artists and this is my favourite albums of 2020, alongside Wake Up Sunshine by All Time Low, Petals For Armour by Hayley Williams, I Disagree by Poppy and Mother by In This Moment. 🖤
Your review was still entertaining though Jon, granted I didn't expect you to hate it THAT much, but I respect that Katy's music isn't for everyone anymore and that she is kind of playing with what's worked in the past, but honestly, this is my favourite of her albums.

A pop album is really what I need sometimes to just sit back and just listen to the music. It might sound like it's all been done before and done better, but it's still fun for my ears. I never took pop songs too seriously to begin with when it comes to lyrics. When a pop song does have decent well written lyrics, I greatly appreciate it, but it's nothing I expect from the genre. • @RuuBjAh1
    @RuuBjAh1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I 100% disagree. This album eviscerates Witness. There's literally not a single song that I remember as being from Witness. I have to actively remind myself that the trainwrecks Bon Appetit and Chained to the Rhythm and the half-decent Swish Swish were even from that album. Other than those three singles there's not a single song that stuck.
And for me personally, it even beats the hell out of Prism. Prism had Legendary Lovers, Walking on Air, Unconditionally, Dark Horse, Birthday and yeah sure even This Is How We Do. And it had Roar, which sucked. But other than those, they were forgettable again.
So is Smile free from down moments? No of course it isn't. Resilient, Smile, What Makes a Woman, Champagne Problems and Teary Eyes were all songs that I jammed out to on first listens, but that probably won't stick around for very long. What Makes a Woman does feel a little bit cliché like you said, which can get old quite quickly. Resilient feels fun and quirky at first, but like the whole quirky girl cliché in some sitcoms, it can also get very old very quickly. Champagne Problems is basically an album filler. It's good, but nothing special. Same goes for Teary Eyes. The later two are songs that won't be thrown off rotation, but that I won't look up for sure.
However, the rest of the tracks are practically perfect. Never Really Over was an amazing first lead single and the best lead single she's had since California Gurls without a shred of doubt. Daisies fits into the same style basically, but even perfects it even more and becomes maybe even the best song Katy's released since 2008's Thinking Of You. Cry About It Later is an infectious dance song that fits its theme of crying through the tears, though Teary Eyes does feel redundant being placed right after it on the track listing. Not the End of the World feels like a love letter to the fans that loved her demo version of Black Widow that leaked, because in interviews she's made clear that she knows of this song. Therefore, it does sound a bit dated (circa 2014/2015), but surprisingly, it is still quite fresh, since the whole R&B/Trap movement won't really die down. Tucked is amazing, like you said. It feels really summery and I think what she was trying to do with this album is uplift everyone's spirits, especially because like you said everyone is still down because of the pandemic. Tucked is a perfect example of this. Harleys in Hawaii has, like you said, a perfect beat, but on top of that, the chorus feels sort of seductive, because of the repeating, interchanging two notes basically. But it doesn't feel boring at all, even though the chorus only consists of two notes. Only Love is a song about spreading love all around the world, which the world could definitely need right now, especially with the hate and division being spread around by world leaders and politicians all over the world right now. Does it feel a little Halmark and cliché? Sure, but it does still get the job done.
Smile would get a 8.5/10 for me and is definitely in her top 3 albums in my opinion.

If Katy realy cared about music, she could make it in her Garage, at home. So all in all, this must realy be the kind of music and album she wants to make? Why ells make it?

@@ramyaaaa respect doesn't equals to love. People don't like Katy perry anymore so deal with it and move on.

What a missed opportunity. I wasn't expecting too much, but this is worse than I imagined.
