Man, the fact that Lana Del Rey’s career not only survived, but thrived, after that SNL performance is nothing shy of a miracle. And this is coming from someone who watched it when it aired!
It's actually unfair that after the SNL perfomance she's still regarded as a bad vocalist by many. Even though it's obvious that she sounds very well in a more relaxed and intimate environment. Take, for example, her perfomance at Jazz Cafe, or her pre-fame live recordings. She was simply terrified and it affected her voice badly, as a vocalist myself, I know it too well.
She surely was hyper nervous. Stage fright is an asshole. Imagine you rise to fame within months and have to sing in front of millions. don’t be so smug.
Ashlee Simpson's SNL performance is such a legendary dumpster fire of a performance. Her career never recovered, I even remember my mom telling me a rumor she heard that Jessica was the one to record all of Ashlee's music since Jessica could actually sing. That performance was so terrible it ruined ANY credibility she had as a singer.
@@Malum09 The Orange Bowl in particular surprises me, because it's almost expected that you lip sync at sporting events because of all the sound interference that can happen. So how even sang live in the first place and gave THAT performance is stunning to me.
I think it would be interesting to rank great bands done dirty by SNL's mixing. I am a huge Soundgarden fan and think their '96 performance is ruined by acoustics. KoRn felt similarly hamstrung in 2005. AFI had an issue where Davey Havok's mic didn't work for the majority of their second song.
Context for Ashlee Simpson Pieces of Me had already been “performed.” This was supposed to be another song (I believe Autobiography), but they started replaying the first track, so it retroactivity revealed she had lip synced her first song and was planning to do so with the second as well. That’s why she was so caught off guard.
Yes. What’s even crazier is that SNL booked her the following season when she was supporting her subsequent album! If that’s not proof of “failing up” in the entertainment business, then I don’t know what is.
How did Katy go from Teenage Dream to having every album after it being bad and worse. Teenage Dream was amazing… ugh. She never followed it with anything close.
The problem is that Katy, whether by her choice or by management's decision, never was able to evolve beyond being a fluffy, bubblegum pop singer in the early stages of her career. So when Teenage Dream became the smash hit it was, it seemed like she (or her producers, who knows) doubled down on the fluff rather than showing more range to what she could do. Compare that to Lady GaGa, who retained a lot of the gaudy, dance-tronica turbo pop that made her successful in some of her post-Fame/Monster songs but allowed herself to steadily evolve and grow into different sounds and ranges beyond that, Katy felt like a one-trick pony after a while. And then when WITNESS came out, the SJW/PC activist thing, while it may have come from a genuine place, came off as hollow due to how she been presented.
Unfortunately the success of TD is largely due to Dr Luke who produced pretty much all the singles that went to number 1. Once his disgusting behavior was made public, Katy realized that she couldn't work with him anymore. But after that she released Witness and well.....I think that record speaks for itself 😞
@@msnewsenior the big problem with PRISM, though, is that it just feels like Teenage Dream Part 2. Katy didn’t really evolve much on it or show any growth as an artist. Todd in the Shadows mentioned in his video on WITNESS that a lot of the singles on PRISM felt like inferior versions of songs from Teenage Dream. Also, songs like Dark Horse haven’t aged well AT ALL.
Ahh that Under The Bridge performance is so iconic for being the most awkward-tension filled performance evvvver. You cannot convince me AK & Frusciante have a good relationship, despite being reunited.

I think I know why. It's not b/c of anger, it's because of guilt. Kiedis did John dirty during his 1st tenure and he was so filled with guilt that, not only did he give John a new guitar as a peace offering, he let John have some control with their sound. He just doesn't want to rock the boat since he hates his past self. If anything, Kiedis is more of the peaceful type that Flea always passes himself as.

Lana suffers from stage fright, in fact after more than a decade of her career she is still dealing with it...she doesn't just "panic" or "shut down" when she sings, it also happens in interviews and when she's speaking in general. In fact, it recently happened to her when she was accepting an award a couple of months ago, you can see that she's super nervous. The important thing to note is that she was able to overcome this performance and the criticism and have a flawless career.
Absolutely. I'm someone who puts a lot of stock in someone's SNL performance - great performances opened my eyes from The Killers to Anderson .Paak. And Lana Del Ray more than any other artist is the one I've most come around to finding to be fantastic after being disappointed in their SNL gig. It's so clear she struggled from nerves on that stage and has followed it up by releasing great studio material
Of course Iggy Azalea, one of the worst rappers ever, had one of the worst performances ever. That's about as surprising as a Uwe Boll movie being bad.
The Chris Gaines character was allegedly going to part of a movie, but the movie was cancelled and the rest of the world was left going WTF. Why he decided to introduce Chris Gaines before the movie was even made continues to be a mystery
@@ShaqPlaque Sure, it takes effort to organize all those other musicians and get them on the same record together. It's just weird that he's the big name on the marquee. I mean, imagine if you were watching a TV show, and some bigshot executive producer came out on screen bellowing an annoying catchphrase every time there was a scene change.
Looking back on Kesha's performance back then, I got to say it wasn't _that_ bad. I remember watching it and thought she did a really good job despite the fact I couldn't stand her messy party girl persona. I sure as hell wouldn't have said out loud because I was an edgy teenage metalhead back then, but I'm an adult now and can give credit where credit us due. I also feel really bad for Ashlee Simpson. Considering all the drama between Kiss and Motley Crue surrounding the use of backing tracks and prerecordings right now, Ashlee's backing track debacle is funnier now that basically everyone uses them rather than for what happened that night.
I would have put Kesha in the top tier of this list too. She plays a lasersynth. Don't want that? That's on you. That's Kesha. Probably the only placement I disagreed with. I don't feel too bad for Ashlee as her music career was lucky to exist in the first place

Karmin is like, an un-guilty pleasure of mine. Everyone I know that remembers they existed thinks they’re awful but I really enjoy almost all of their stuff, especially Hello, that album is so fun.
Regarding Karmin, I do have some nostalgia for their songs “Brokenhearted” and “Hello” but haven’t seen their SNL performance or a lot of these actually (at least when they first came out)
Honestly Ashlee had the right idea to lipsynch because the acoustics on that stage sound like shit. 😂 so many people partially lipsynch now that you can’t even half the time tell when it’s live or not. She was ahead of her time. 😂😂😂

I would mention Fear on SNL. No one wanted them but John Belushi campaigned hard to get them on the show. In true punk bank fashion they completely destroyed the stage and caused thousands of dollars in damages. They also sounded really horrible and got a lifetime ban.
I was wondering if Fear (or Elvis Costello's "Radio Radio" or Rage Against The Machine's "you don't get to play a second song") were going to be on this list, but it seems he went with performances considered insufficient by the viewing public rather than the NBC suits

I dunno, I look at Season 6 and see Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Linda Ronstadt. Season 6 had problems but the musician booking department does not seem to have been one of them

Kid Kruschev is with Jar of Flies as one of my favorite EPs. I agree with you that their performance was not that bad, but wonder if it could had been off this list entirely if they played Rill Rill or Infinity Guitars second (you have to play the new stuff first)
I caught the Ashlee Simpson performance in kind of a weird way. I was out late doing sound for a coffeehouse, so I flipped on SNL which I hadn't seen in months. And this weird thing was the first thing I saw. After she did her little dance and left the stage my response was "WTF was that all about?" Since I hadn't seen her earlier performance, I was very confused.
When it comes to bad performances, Greta Van Fleet’s set was very lazy, boring and they pretty much tanked after that performance, I forgot that they existed like a year later! That’s one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen
Were you watching Li'l Yachty a few weeks ago? I mean, you can't get worse than to sound and look horrible while relying exclusively on auto-tune to stay on key. That was the worst I've seen in 47+ years of watching.
"fun" fact: Migos refused to perform with drag queens right before the performance was about to start, so Katy got a panic attack and had to improvise everything in Bon Appetít performance, so let's give her credit for still sounding good and being professional and trying her best to cover all up by improvising. Honestly some of the things she did are kinda cool, like the bridge move and the fact that she managed to sing at the same time... it's not a bad performance at all.
The Ashlee Simpson performance because There’s rehearsal footage from that day thanks to 60 Minutes being there filming a piece on SNL that exact day that shows her struggling with her voice.
I’m a big Marianne Faithfull fan, but her SNL performance was painful. I also understand that The Pogues screwed up so badly that Dennis Miller started mocking them on that episode’s Weekend Update
I know this is off-topic but Jon should do another top 10 favorite bands video. Those videos helped introduce me to so many bands including some top 10 favorite bands of mine such as Paramore, QOTSA, System, and Arctic monkeys is just outside my top 10. Plus I know when a new album by that band drops you either drop them or higher them.
Glad you didn't forget about Ashlee Simpson. She got screwed by her band, who destroyed her career in one night. All pop acts lip sync. Pop is my least favorite genre of music, but it's unfair what happened to her. Her first performance was not bad, and for a pop song Pieces of Me is actually quite decent. But Autobiography was the end.

I agree with you that their performance was not that bad, but wonder if it could had been off this list entirely if they played Rill Rill or Infinity Guitars second (you have to play the new stuff first)
I caught the Ashlee Simpson performance in kind of a weird way. I was out late doing sound for a coffeehouse, so I flipped on SNL which I hadn't seen in months. And this weird thing was the first thing I saw. After she did her little dance and left the stage my response was "WTF was that all about?" Since I hadn't seen her earlier performance, I was very confused.
When it comes to bad performances, Greta Van Fleet’s set was very lazy, boring and they pretty much tanked after that performance, I forgot that they existed like a year later! That’s one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen
That's who Greta Van Fleet are. So it's an honest performance at the least
Were you watching Li'l Yachty a few weeks ago? I mean, you can't get worse than to sound and look horrible while relying exclusively on auto-tune to stay on key. That was the worst I've seen in 47+ years of watching.
Lana was new, i don't think she took that performance seriously, if she was a man in a rock band, it would be a statement.😂
"fun" fact: Migos refused to perform with drag queens right before the performance was about to start, so Katy got a panic attack and had to improvise everything in Bon Appetít performance, so let's give her credit for still sounding good and being professional and trying her best to cover all up by improvising. Honestly some of the things she did are kinda cool, like the bridge move and the fact that she managed to sing at the same time... it's not a bad performance at all.
I saw Karmin open for the Jonas brothers back in 2013, and honestly it was pretty good. BUT then everything they did after that was lackluster. 😂

The Ashlee Simpson performance because There’s rehearsal footage from that day thanks to 60 Minutes being there filming a piece on SNL that exact day that shows her struggling with her voice.
Fear had the best SNL performance, because they and a bunch of punks in the audience trashed that crappy soundstage.

I LOVED the Sleigh Bells SNL performance. You just weren't on the right drugs when you watched them.
While it's not perfect, SNL gets the sound right more than any other live tv show.
I’m a big Marianne Faithfull fan, but her SNL performance was painful. I also understand that The Pogues screwed up so badly that Dennis Miller started mocking them on that episode’s Weekend Update

I know this is off-topic but Jon should do another top 10 favorite bands video. Those videos helped introduce me to so many bands including some top 10 favorite bands of mine such as Paramore, QOTSA, System, and Arctic monkeys is just outside my top 10. Plus I know when a new album by that band drops you either drop them or higher them.

Glad you didn't forget about Ashlee Simpson. She got screwed by her band, who destroyed her career in one night. All pop acts lip sync. Pop is my least favorite genre of music, but it's unfair what happened to her. Her first performance was not bad, and for a pop song Pieces of Me is actually quite decent. But Autobiography was the end.
