You start to realise how deep into your mitski obsession you are when you sit through a long podcast with mitski and find a specific sentence where she said she helped her friends with their film stuff... And then you find that film stuff...
mitski would be such a good diane in a live action bojack horseman. her songs translate the same struggles diane has and it’s evident she has the acting skills too.
What I interpret from the film and song is someone who is self sacrificing, not necessarily because they are selfless as a virtue but because it is all they know how to do. I always saw the song as the speaker going to parties and giving herself away through sex for example, which is why she says “somebody please, tell me no” as if asking someone to save her and help her- something she can do for other people but not for herself. It’s like she’s an angel in a rapture, granting people in purgatory passage to a different place, but since she is an angel she is stuck in limbo.
Idk what she does with the pill pod at the end but it looks like she’s licking it as if to get a taste of what her clients are experiencing, but as seen in the following shot, she doesn’t and she’s left disappointed and goes back to her cycle of yearning. The job gave her a purpose in life or at least a career, which is seemingly better than where she was at the start crying on the floor, but is definitely not fulfilling. The themes of the film (or at least from my interpretation of it lol) rly seem to intertwine with Mitski’s discography, (i.e. wanting to be taken away, finding purpose in life, assigning one’s value to their career and economic success, etc.) seen in titles like “Retired from sad new career in business”, “Carry me out”, “Jobless Monday”
@@amarijayamari that's how i see it. Living in a capitalist society, i think we naturally attribute our value to how we can strengthen the system and sacrifice ourselves to it in a sense, which is through working and finding our career path.
This is an absolutely excellent short film. Goes way beyond a music video. I keep coming back and being blown away by the storytelling and Mitski’s acting. Chef’s kiss.
i think my favorite thing about this is all these people are seeing god and we’re sitting with the heroine just as she sits with them, not knowing what god looks like, and maybe wanting to see “him” ourselves a little bit. it’s beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
I still find myself coming back to this project after years and I’ve never truly understood why mitski’s character ended up with this job etc etc. i would love to watch more of this and it would’ve been cool had it been a longer movie. but overall, wow. this is still really good even years later.
@@amarijayamarii would absolutely love to see this project revisited its such a interesting concept and could definitely expanded on!! its so beautifully made and id love to see more of it
she basically tends to people who try the drug (she sells i presume) hence, sitter. but she never tries it for herself. if someone can actually use the song as a metaphor pls @ me lol i wanna read
@@mimikyuui This is just how I interpret the video and the song: She’s the sitter. She gets paid to watch other people “meet god” or more literally, do drugs. Cause she knows everyone wants to get raptured in their own way. I think the song is her view as a sort of “enabler”. Usually the focus is always put on the one doing the action - maybe in this case, taking the pill and experiencing the euphoria. But even if she isn’t taking the pill, she’s watching everyone experience it, and sets it up for them. I think in the terms of this music video, she might feel a bit of guilt or want to stop - “Somebody please tell me no” But she doesn’t. She’s kind of the illusive piece to it all. I think she gets raptured in her own way. She doesn’t feel the need to get the same high as everyone else does from the drug, but she still feels apart of the life - even if it’s second hand - “Glory glory glory to the night, that shows me what I am” I kind of think of it like a play. Where the actors are the ones experiencing the high, and she might be more of the stage crew - less noticed. Even if she isn’t in the spotlight, she put the pieces together and is a part of it. She might rationalize her guilt by saying she makes people happy and believes everyone wants to get raptured. And that she doesn’t take the pill herself, doesn’t feel a need to. But I still think she feels a bit of hesitancy for what she does. That’s just my interpretation of the song along with the music video. When I just listen to the song I think of someone who is living a reckless lifestyle and wants someone to care about them and tell them to stop. But I think it’s cool songs can have different meanings to everyone, and that’s just mine.
I am so fascinated and shocked right now. the emotions, the usage of mitskis song, the characters, different situations, everything. I didn't know what to expect, I only clicked on this video because I saw Mitski on the thumbnail. but this is incredible. I can't express how much I love this short film. the storytelling is just amazing. this is art. damn. and I talk like I know what Im saying, while I really don't know what to say. it's just amazing

That's a perceptive view- could be part of the angst of post-modern living, creating occupations we can live with.
