    Yo Micah, huge congrats on getting monetized!!!
    I love the mentality around this. Something like the 10-18mm can fit your wide angle needs until you decide to upgrade (or not) in the future. There's always gear rentals if you need access to nicer glass!
    My A7IV shoots aps-c crop in 4k60p anyways, so I've been seriously considering getting APS-C crop lenses for specific applications where I know I'll want to use 4k60p. For web content IMO, the image quality still looks great, so as long as we're aware of the cons of the setup, I'd say why not?!

    Hey man ! Love this content by far the best "10-18mm full frame Apsc lens" review ! By the way I gotta ask, if u are vlogging while walking with this lens, will the shake caused by walking gonna make the vignette show up at the corners from time to time ? Or we just have to zoom in close enough and this won't happen

    Fantastic video! You’re the first person I’ve seen feature the 10-18 apsc on the full frame and explain its benefits and flaws for videography.
    Have been shooting with this lens on my a6500 for years now and eagerly waiting for my ZV E1 to arrive next week and happy to see I can still get away with using this lens when needing to go ultra wide.

    Nowadays, I have switched to a Laowa 9mm f/5.6.

    This is a great hack. I ended up going with Sony 12-24 G F4. I just got it today. I see the inability to use filters mentioned as a drawback, but I can't imagine a situation where I'd want to use an ND with this lens. In wide shots I don't need or want shallow depth of field, so I'll just close down the iris in bright situations.

    Nice info about how it actually looks on FF camera! I was in the similar position when I was trying to find an ultra-wide lens for a7r2. Unfortunately just like you said, most of the options are for APS-C, and FF options are just insanely expensive. The manual primes sounds good but just unusable for a daily driver. Finally I jumped the wagon on Tamron 17-28, which is very great. F2.8 and comparable optics performance with GM (at least from some of the review) didn't make it cheap, but at least makes it justifiable. IF I were to know that this one works kind of OK on Full Frame, I'd probably just go with it. It's cheap like a toy, with the new 10-20 it could only become cheaper and cheaper in the used market.
    An interesting thing is a7r2 is 42MP, the 4k actually works best when in the Crop/Super35/APS-C mode, the image quality is just insane. Clean like being washed by water (in a good way). BUT you lose the wide end, 17 on tamron becomes 24 again, which is "normal" but not "wide", 24 on things like 24-70 becomes 35, which is NARROW in most of the circumstance. For me the ultra-wide perspective definitely worth more than the marginal IQ improvement, so I ended up with 4k full-frame mode almost all time.
    I'm for most of the time a still shooter, so the tamron 17-28 makes sense to me. But later I think you probably should upgrade to something like an 61MP a7r4, r5, or the now cheaper 42MP r3, if the video specs meets the minimum of your demand. I can probably guess why you got the a7s at first place, because it's at all a full frame, and you did a lot of video. People said this is to be for the video and performs best in low light. All the checkboxes are ticked. And most importantly, the price for all these seems acceptable. Probably you may also thought it's "easier" to get "wider" at Full Frame, because 24 is finally a 24 not a 35, so theoretically it's easier to get a wide angle on a FF. There's just only one problem: you haven't checked the FF wide lens price yet.
    However just like you said yourself, you do a lot of real estate videos professionally, which doesn't involve a lot of critical lighting conditions -- nothing a tad increase of ISO could not fix, and no one's pixel peaking for that. After all most real estate does not involve a dungen. It has lights all over the place and when you want to showcase for it, you want to turn all those lights on. So in my view you just threw the biggest advantage of the a7s, in exchange for an unusable 1080P crop mode, which you might actually need. Full frame is not for you, at least professionally. So if I were you I'd either up my game to A7R to take full advantage of the FULL FRAME sensor size by having the ridiculously HIGH RESOLUTIONS -- which opens a whole new world for landscape and everything. Especially if you have a nice screen like the 5k iMac, you just can't go back. The is the correct way to take full advantage of your other expensive GM lens. The optics resolution can only go as sharp as the sensor resolution goes. Plus now you have a very usable 4k crop/super35 mode. The image is down sampled from 8k or 6k, it can just be as good as the a7s. Or I'll just back my game to something like a ZV-E10, which I'd bet it ticks every box you need when you do your profesional real estate shooting. Just don't forget to put it on a huge gimbal to look "pro" to your clients!

  • @TheLAexplorer
    @TheLAexplorer 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I haven't used this lens recently but if I remember correctly, setting the a7S III to APS-C mode doesn't downgrade the video resolution. After all, APS-C cameras are also capable of shooting in UHD

    • @MicahPowell
      @MicahPowell  24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      while this would be correct for any of the other sony A7 series, (A7R, A7) the A7S3's sensor is only a 12mp sensor, which is a little higher than 4k. so if you use apsc mode, its cropping in 1.5x into the 4k sensor. that's why its limited to 1080p. you CANNOT shoot 4k at apsc crop on a7s3.

    I decided to check out which of my other apsc lenses still worked on the full frame body and it turns out that the pancake 20mm lens is pretty similar. the coverage is juuuust a smidge under full frame size. it looses the ibis but gains a stop in the aperture while also being very compact.
    its a little tight for self-vloging but a nice focal length for filming friends during hikes and such
    I might try and find a copy of the 16 mm pancake

      only a few APS-C lenses will work reasonably well on FF, this being virtually the only one that really makes sense to buy.
      even then, i grabbed one from amazon and returned it, opted for a real FF, the 16-35 Zeiss F4, which I found for $400 used, in virtually new condition... i think far better deals are to be had w used lenses over this, since the new 16-35 PZ AND new 16-35 GMv2 came out, if you really need wider than 16 I'd get a used Sigma 14-24... it's FF and f2.8 as well, much better than this lens, which is just plastic-y imo

  • @MattMcCool0
    @MattMcCool0 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I think the 16-35 f/4 is a much better option. I know it's a little more expensive (I've seen it as low as $500), but it's pretty close to a no-compromise full frame lens. It addresses every issue you mentioned here. That was my go-to lens when I shot real estate.

    Or could just buy a laowa 10-18mm for full frame Sony. I use that on my Sony A7R3 . It’s a 100 percent manual lens but the sharpness and quality is excellent. Going for like $500 now or less

  • @Nitish0989

    • @DigiDriftZone
      @DigiDriftZone 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're copping in about 40-50% to remove the vignette, so your 60mp becomes more like a 30-35mp. You're also looking at an equivalent of about an F6. It also has negative side effects such as the IBIS being less effective and forget about in body lens corrections, you have to do that all in post. There are a lot of limitations, I don't think it's worth it personally.

      Hey! So I’m not entirely sure… but I think that shooting the apsc mode may crop in a tiny bit much? Cant really speak to shooting in apsc tho. Another option is getting a Sony E to Canon EF adapter and then buying a used 11-24mm F4 lens. Since it's designed for Full Frame completely you can go to 11mm wide without vignetting. There's also now a 10mm F2.8 lens if you need even wider than that.

    • @MicahPowell

      @@MicahPowell it depends on the adapter you use, and unfortunately, since Sony would prefer for you to use E Mount lenses, your gonna want to update the firmware on your adapter regularly. The two ones I can confidently recommend are the EF to E Mount adapter that Sigma makes, or the ND Throttle Fusion Canon EF to Sony E Mount adapter. The first one is just known for being fairly reliable since it's from a high profile Sony partner, and a latter option is also pretty reliable, but comes with a built-in variable ND filter.

    a 10-18mm f/4 behaves like 15-27 f/5.6 on full frame. I'd prefer to go with the native full frame 16-35mm f/4 then which is pretty close in price, at least where I live

    • @MicahPowell
      @MicahPowell  ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually it is a true 10-18mm as with the apsc sensors you’d have a 1.5x crop. So it’s not a 15-27mm whereas that’s what you’d see in native apsc.

    • @DigiDriftZone
      @DigiDriftZone 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MicahPowell You're right, you are indeed starting from 10-18 before you're cropping in, but you have to crop in around 30-40% to remove the vignette depending on where you are in the zoom range: 40% at 10mm and 30% at 18mm, so it's more like a 14-23mm F6 full frame equivalent - but even after this crop, you still have some more corrections to do in post. I personally don't find the footage very pleasing at 14mm (post crop).
      A true full frame 14mm would indeed be bigger / heavier and more expensive. But do you find that 16mm is not wide enough for your work? - I find that to be the sweet spot for real-estate personally.

  • @DigiDriftZone

    Maybe it's my eyes but this looks suboptimal to me, the image warps and wobbles like jello when there is any kind of movement, it also doesn't look as detailed - maybe it's enough for your usage but this looks a bit soft for 4k? (maybe it's just me).
    The image processing just cannot handle so much of the image being missing using an APS-C lens, you are effectively switching off a lot of the benefits of having a full frame camera to begin with.
    If it works for you, great, but in my opinion this looks worse than just using an APS-C camera. Why not just do that?
    As for budget full frame lens options, have you looked at the new 16mm F1.8 from Viltrox (big but incredible quality)? or something like the 16-28 from Sigma if you want something smaller/lighter with a zoom (admittedly it's about 50% more expensive here second hand in the UK)? - you're getting F2.8 there too instead of something like an F6 with the APS-C lens and you're removing all the cons and unlocking the full functionality of your camera.

    As budget goes you can probably pick up a Sigma 10-20mm for sub 100$ if you realy need a zoom. Otherwise just grabb a MF or AF 14mm f/2.8 Samyang.
    Funny thing, there actualy IS a full frame 10-18mm at a similar price. The Laowa 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 FE
