We rescued a Malinois that lived in the wild for a few months and would climb trees to catch cats and pull salmon out of the river if she saw them and chase ducks to the horizon as they were flying away. We found a sheep herding school that helped cure her of chasing anything out of control and turned it into a game/job.
To break that dog’s behavior at that point blows my mind.
@@BosMass617 It was a process. Hard to describe rewiring a dog to not catch and kill prey after it did so out of survival instinct.
Timing is everything!
Indeed
I'm waiting for this one. I just recently got control of my adopted dog that was hunting wild animals for previous years. For a year I had to keep him on leash because he had been lost at least twice with previous owner, and he was on a farm in bad shape before that.
Now I can let him off leash in the woods at last, after I stopped feeding him at home, and feeding only in the woods, small amounts on every recall. He's generally more attentive now as well, and is making better progress "across the board". I didn't actually try to stop him catching squirrels and rabbits, I just wanted him to return when called. He's been able to catch without going crazy and wild and over the hill and gone.
Oh thats a really good way to learn recall! My previous dog i could never get to come back when in the wood. I will try this when we get a new dog
@@rugeramerican308 As we progressed in trust he has begun to show too much excitement when there are swarms of squirrels and he begins a random chase sequence because wherever he runs if one squirrel is gone there's more of them scattering with his sudden appearance. So I think I have to stop allowing him going after them because he seems right on the edge of a serious game of "chase squirrels everywhere and keep going".
I want zero instances of that, where he takes off out of sight and is gone for a half hour or whatever.
Thank you Hans for another lesson. Your technical correction process is so helpful.
You are very welcome
16mins in makes so much sense, think ive been doing this just because i want my dog to focus on me. Totally, get how my mum is doing so much better with the dog than my dad. Dads bottom of the pack! 🤣
Glad to know you enjoyed the content :)
Mine is checking and has this look always on dogs.with cars, bikes cats i have managed to bring close to no response. Woth dogs from checking and letting her to avoid it to checking and loading happens sometimes 0.1 sec. So must have to correct the look or what i do to start loading.will save for the obedience course .so far with few but clear explanations i have understood things that many trainers couldnt or their words coming to a conflict with my logic.thank you
How many times do we correct until we know we can leave him off leash? Do we know that he is good when he doesn’t look at the chickens on leash?
A lot of trainer said to give command when the dog fixate othe animal. Lets say the dog reactive towards other dogs, its wrong to tell the dog "lets go" (after the dog know the command) and if the dog still fixate or go forwards before the lunging - only then to say "no" + correction?
My dog is working line shepherd with decent drive (not very high), he likes chasing squirrels but we have a mutual understanding he cannot chase unless I say its okay.. should we not do this? Should I just never let him chase a rabbit or squirrel for fun? I feel bad not letting him do it if it is safe, he really enjoys it
To be honest I live in one of the most dangerous cities in America. Almost every day we bump into a situation..I really don't give a shit what my dog chases after..as long as I know when push comes to shove and that decision has to be made do I go forward and get the bad guy or do I tuck and run...I know were my boy stands.
Our pup got killed by a car chasing a cat
Sorry to hear that. I find the 2 thumbs up a bit odd though.
Hans = fony
Why do you say that
Please try to spell it correctly. Why do so I am a phony?
Your comment can’t be taken seriously without your supporting the statement with proof of what you say. It is 100% an emotional response.
@@lauracollins5298 Sounds liem pot calling kettle black. What specifically can not be taken seriously?
