    I always considered the hyperdrive-equipped fighters to be like what US Air Force fighter jets are and the fighters without a hyperdrive are like the fighter on a US Navy Aircraft Carrier. One acts independent and the other is dependent on a larger vessel.

    • @dreamingflurry2729

      Well, Navy jets actually aren't short ranged anymore...not to mention that for true long-range missions all current fighter jets need a tanker-aircraft (or several!)

    There's also financing and running cost to consider.
    Everyone wants a *Tie Defender,* but the initial outlay is much larger and getting spare parts would be a pain. On the plus side there is the *amortization* that _over time it will pay for itself_ in kills and *not dying.*
    But still you don't want to get trapped in a bad financial situation, and find yourself distracted by thinking about money woes in the middle of a dogfight. That will lead to you being hesitant to use ordinance like torpedoes when the opportunity presents itself.
    Why do you think the Tie Phantom was fitted with such a terminal anti theft system?
    Their price was so high that they were a prime target for being stolen. Rebels didn't usually bother nicking standard Ties, except for joy rides.

    The empire: don’t need shields/life support/hyperdrive/heavy cannons/anything else if you’re maneuverable enough to not get hit. That or all those is too expensive

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      There was some logic behind that. During Clone Wars most fighter battles take place alongside capital ship and those fighters didn't really need any of that junk, profiting strongly from small size and maneuverability. Especially against Droid Fighters. ARC-170 was grossly misused during direct combat, when it was ship designed for long range patrols (same as Y-Wing). This fact lead to abandoning by empire development of heavy fighters like X-Wing, same as they didn't see purpose in fast but pricey A-Wing. Instead they focus on designs based on streamlined versions of really good Eta-2 Actis Interceptor, so the TIE family. Also people commonly forget that TIE/LN was extremely dated (though some variants were expanded) and it was already replaced by superior TIE/IN (Interceptor). On top of that Empire actually did work on next-gen ships like TIE/AD (Advanced/Avenger) and Thrawn TIE/D (Defender). What have all features, though they were mostly designed for the special forces. On top of that First Order TIE/FO and special force TIE/SF commonly did have shield and hyper-drive.

    • @liamhogan4369
      @liamhogan4369 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They learned their lesson on cutting costs by using outdated fighters and being unwilling to update fighter doctrine, to be sure. It was logical to use the TIE/LN to mop up after the clone wars.
      However, turning down Incom's masterpiece as a heavy fighter for your ace pilots was a poor choice indeed, considering how much effort went into training those guys. Plus, steadfastly refusing to implement more advanced TIE designs until it was far too late, especially considering the Empire really needed a hyperspace capable fighter for its anti-piracy and smuggling policing efforts (to the point that even the z-95 would be a better choice over the TIE/LN) ... that speaks to a deeply flawed military procurement process.
      As does the fact that relatively minor investments of resources produced the excellent TIE Defender and TIE Advanced, not to mention that the X-Wing and Skipray Blastboat where both turned down after the development costs were paid in full, simply because those platforms didn't work within existing fighter doctrine. Sure, it's not feasible to replace all Imperial fighters with those, but a handful on each ship would greatly benefit an Empire in desperate need of any means to project its influence further. The hyperspace ability also means you can second such fighters (well, the Blastboat is a gunship) to other groups, like that lone Carrack-class a few sectors over, with ease.

    • @casbot71
      @casbot71 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A good compromise would be to use the same platform for a Hyperspace and a non Hyperspace equipped fighter.
      The non hyperdrive variant can use the saved weight and space *(and cost)* for extra shields or ordinance.
      It would _simplify logistics_ and also lead to some confusion by opponents (unless you painted them different colours… ).
      A ideal main fighter for the Empire would have been a downscaled Tie Defender. Removing the hyperdrive would save _a fair amount of money_ as well as keep with the unofficial doctrine of not having easily nickable single seat fighters. Add in even more powerful shields in its place and suddenly imperial pilots are even more feared cause they are hard to shoot down (which greatly improves combat effectiveness).
      Or extra ordinance could be installed instead, feeding into the launchers and suddenly you've got a strike bomber as well. A large load of ion torpedoes would be very useful as it would enable the fighter to disable Rebel corvettes for capture, and other ships just acting suspicious - suspected smugglers, possible pirates and so forth.
      And the more expensive hyperdrive equipped variants are used by special _Loyal and trustworthy_ Hunter Killer teams that go out for long range recon and raids/strikes.
      It could even be a further development that the hyperdrive and the extra shield generators are removable interchangeable modules that can be installed according to need.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liamhogan4369 That isn't exactly true. Empire was a Empire. Even they capital ships were designed under they TIE doctrine and they needed to replace squadrons in almost 15000 ISD's at least. What they actually did, introducing upgraded Interceptor. Cancellation of X-Wing was a mistake, but but mostly because Z-95 was proved in combat. Though we need remember that during consolidation they closed many, sometimes actually redundant projects.
      Rebellion could have superior fighter forces mostly because they build them from ground up shortly before Endor, when they get suport of minor powers and senators. For most time they fight with the uglies and weren't considered as major threat. But they were jumping point when Rebellion get major support.
      Also Empire did have answer on X-Wing, problem was that Death Star project basically hold development of most of projects (like for example Lancer). Even ISD was super dated and Empire build only few new ISD2's. And I agree that it was mistake. But Empire doctrine wasn't as irrational as people think. But they overreliance on fear and superweapons opened door to attacks. But we need remember that Endor was actually last time Rebelion could win in the combat. And not only because of Death Star.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@casbot71 You make same mistake as the Empire. Defensive Fighters are good idea on paper, but mobile strike crafts have always tactical advantage. If so investment in Lancers would make more sense as they could constantly shield capital ships and support counteroffensives against fighters (plus rebels actually fear them). Whole point of Defender was to give empire its own Attack (Snub) Fighter. Striping it would be pointless as more dedicated crafts like Interceptor would do better job. And inefficiency of heavy fighters in close combat like with ARC-170 was they reason they abandon them, even if they were simply misused. Loyalty was least important factor here.

      Probably quite brutal against unshielded craft, as Star Wars's existing slug-throwers and scatterguns are great against unarmored foes. If these weapons are anything to go by, the projectile would likely be coated in energy or highly volatile or both.
      Capital-ship wise ... Star Wars power plants and capacitors are insanely good. A Star Wars laser (plasma launcher really) is say, 50% efficient at transmitting that energy to a target. A Gauss Cannon several kilometers long ... that would be more like 80-90%, as we on Earth, with our limited technology, have reached upwards of 70% efficiency. Repulsorlifts would be especially useful in such a weapon, probably to the point of being a staple of large railguns and gauss cannons.
      A gun with higher ROF (due to less cooling needs) almost twice the energy, in a smaller, denser package that won't break up on hitting shields and will completely ignore ion shielding in favor of pummeling ray shields ... that sounds painful. And if you're particularly devious, you could slap an inertial dampener and/or amplifier on the shell, speeding it up in transit, and then massively amplifying it's inertia to slip by or punch through the shields, followed by speeding it right back up again.
      Railguns would also likely work in a universe with materials science good enough to make durasteel and transparasteel.

      Liam Hogan what exactly is a Gauss Cannon?

    • @liamhogan4369
      @liamhogan4369 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@HispAnakin42 A railgun propels a projectile via the natural expansion of a high voltage electrical current. The projectile actually completes the circuits, bridging the two rails.
      The problem is that such voltages shatter tungsten alloys like glass.
      A Gauss Cannon, named after Friedrich Gauss who provided the mathematics for its construction, is a long tube lined with a series of circular electromagnets perpendicular to the tube in bands ... imagine a pipe banded with washers. As the projectile moves down the tube, each magnet is turned off and on sequentially, so the (metallic) projectile is constantly being pulled in the same direction. The projectile never actually touches the walls of the tube, so friction is negligible and in space drag is largely negligible.
      The limiting factor is length, the longer the Gauss system, the proportionally more powerful it is ... while it's not too powerful in a given distance compared to a railgun, a Gauss cannon can be almost indefinitely scaled up; it has no maximum size. For reference, a man-portable gauss system is about as strong as a BB gun.
      On the upper end ... with even 1960s technology, it was demonstrated we could build one to launch objects into lunar orbit from the surface of the moon; it would be 1.5 or so km long, much shorter than Gauss predicted. Conceivably, one could be built to launch or assist in launching objects into Earth orbit, at 10 or more km long. Needless to say, a hit by a weapon like that would rival an atomic bomb ... a mere 1 kg object moving at escape velocity has as much energy as an entire lightning bolt, or enough energy to vaporize the entire body of a human being, 3.2 gigajoules. Another bonus is the projectile, while usually travelling much slower than a railgun's, is still going at hypervelocity; if it hits something, it will stop once it's partially inside what it hit, resulting in a massive explosion even though no explosives are present, similar to a meteorite impact.

    Personally my ideal starfighter sort of doubles as a transport and what better ships to default to then something Mandalorian made. The Kom'rk-class Gauntlet Fighter/Transport vessel, a variant build of the ship similar to Maul's ship Nightbrother of course. Equipped with hyperdrive, nav computer, and short range sensors, this ship is a good choice if you got yourself a crew, this ship has a crew capacity of 24. If you don't have a crew then that's alright because you can pilot the ship solo if you prefer to work alone. The Gauntlet is armed with two forward laser cannons as well as two rear laser cannons which should give you an edge when it comes to dog fights especially with the swivel mounted wings which can provide vectored-thrust control, allowing a bit more speed for the ship, suitable for Space/Air combat and troop transportation. All these come standard with the ship and although the Kom'rk-class fighter/transport comes at a steep price of 190,000 credits I can assure you it is worth every credit.

    Control difficulty: Apart from the X-Wing and A-Wing, with the former being praised for its ease of control and thus higher average performance, and the latter being way more complex and hard to learn, but allowing ace pilots to have a higher efficiency ceiling, this feature is more often talked about in series like Gundam, but in Star Wars it really goes to show how good the beginner-friendly and civiliancraft-shared controlled X-Wing was for a rebellion made up of mostly civilians like Luke and Biggs, especially with the gain in support the Rebels gained after the Battle of Yavin.

When fast and maneuverable droid fighters are each as deadly as a manned fighter, and cost one tenth as much, with no loss of life when taken down, then there is no reason to have a manned fighter out there getting shot at. Just launch overwhelming numbers of disposable drones, and let them do the job of manned fighters instead.

      Considering the most valuable resource in the Rebel Alliance is experienced fighters/pilots a drone controlled fighter seems like a no-brainer. Unlike the Empire, pilots don't grow on trees (or in vats) for the Alliance so protecting them and using their experience makes perfect sense. You could probably fit a hell of a lot more pilot-free fighters in a hanger than you normally can so you have backups (with valuable experience). There is also the bonus of less support crew in dangerous situations meaning you can free them up to be used elsewhere.
      It's not like they're going to get fired and hang around on Coruscant (or some other non-destroyed world) waving a sign saying how they were replaced by a drone... :p

    All that power saved on the TIE, all the extra power from the solar panels in its wings, and ... seriously, only 2 light laser cannons? You could probably fit even a medium laser cannon in addition to that. In fact, the Spec-ops TIE from the force awakens shows you can fit shielding and a tail gunner in, with minimal design changes.
    Heck, the Imperials are fighting pirates, rebels, and smugglers not large fleets in pitched battles, and have the edge in training. They're the ones who really need hyperspace capable fighters to extend their reach and shorten their response times. They're the ones who need to protect their vastly superior pilots ... dodge all you want, shrapnel, explosions, micro-meteors will eventually damage or even destroy your craft.
    Just look at what this design philosophy is capable of producing when you don't slap a POS power plant in: the Tie Defender. Considering how much training goes into an Imperial Pilot, there is no excuse for downgrading the power plant to the point you don't have shields. If you're going to do that, shove conscripts into those TIEs and stop throwing credits away by training superb pilots.

      There's also aging to consider. Sure, the Zero could out-maneuver any fighter at the start of the, but by the end? TIEs are decades old by the Original Trilogy, and the Empire knew they were going to stay around.
      Once you lose the edge ... well, I'd prefer my old fighters to be somewhat useful. The X-Wing was not too much of a problem, but once the A-Wings and B-Wings came out, they were completely outclassed.

    Considering all footage of fighters in the SW universe seem to fly in to a battle situation in formation and on one level of degree (compared to the 1000's of degrees you could attack from in space) making it easier for the enemy to focus on one area, I would say "Lane Keeping assistance" would be a must....

    My ideal ship would be sensors to cover my horrible vision on my sides. Plenty of shields so I can take a beating. An astromech to help with everything. And plenty of weapons. I’d personally like guns that can go off bore. So my personal choice would be a y wing with a droid to control the second turrets.

    at the cost of weighting my ship down a lot, I'd want a life support system in the cockpit and a wearable life support system just in case for redundancy even if the added weight is enormous and the flight suit is clunky and hard to comfortably use

    I do find it interesting that on most of the other criteria, you acknowledge a trade-off, but for astromechs you seem to be pretty much saying "you must have this!"
    I think there's a tradeoff there as well - astromechs involve additional weight that a simple navcomputer doesn't (in fact, I suspect that the reason why starfighter navcomputers are usually simple is that if you have the space and weight to install an astromech-quality navcomputer, you might as well install an astromech... or at least the head of one). For heavier and more durable fighters, such as the X-Wing and up, it probably is worthwhile - the weight is a relatively small fraction of that of the overall craft, and the ship is durable enough that you can take a bit of damage that the astromech might help with damage control for. For something like an A-Wing or most TIEs, though, you might just not be able to afford the additional space and volume, and the benefit of repairs is probably minimised by the fact that the lighter ships usually only take a couple of solid hits to destroy them, so the likelihood of them being in a state where they need repair without having gone beyond the point where they CAN be repaired is probably pretty small.

    What would your Starfighter design be?
    I’m more inclined to having four B-Wings fused together to one cockpit (imagine an X-Wing with S-Foils on their S-Foils). Maybe I should us the TIE Bomber, or similar models’, cockpit in order to make it work properly 🤔…
    Actually, what would be your three ship designs: a Capital ship (smallest being a Corvette), a Shuttle (just in case you can’t land your capital ship), and a Starfighter (various other reasons)? You’re only allowed ONE design of each & you need to fit ‘em all together…

    Y wing with astromech, hyperdrive and rear gunner or automated turret controlled by astromech or another droid, no life support in favor for shields. Thanks to the clone wars show we know Astromechs can control droid fighters, so I’ll attach two droid tri fighters on each side of my ship to deploy when in combat. The Y wing is fairly maneuverable and can take a hit. This rig is energy intensive, but the levels of defense makes up for it.

    My choice? No hyperdrive or class 10 at best, to reduce size, shields, solar panels, astromech with control over a rear light laser cannon, a forward facing ion cannon and dual laser cannons and another light turbolaser juiced with kyber if I could get my hands on it, no torpedo's, also a flight suit instead of a control environment. I'd plan on being attached to a larger ship that does have hyperspace capability so I'd forego what I don't need. My ship would possibly be a bit slower but hopefully not too bad with hyperdrive and environment canned. I'd imagine mine like a tie phantom with 5 instead of 3 solar panels and a gun on the back. The only problem is if I got a light turbolaser juiced with kyber I'd have to really change up the design so I could have that weapon on point more often. It'd probably have to be on the back with the rear light laser cannon.

    There is one other MAJOR issue with hyper-drive equipped fighters. How long, do you want to sit in that cockpit. Take the a-wing, its tiny cockpit.. and think about how long it takes to travel. a short jump might takes 24 hours with a x1 hyperdrive. can you imagine spending 24 hours in an a-wing cockpit on a jump to attack something... THEN 24 hours on the way back?

    Just to play devil's advocate on #7, secondary weapons...
    If you're in a fighter with no anti-capital-ship weapons, then your fighter can specialize in its anti-fighter role. It also means your one- or two-man strike ship is _not_ expected to pick fights with mile-long battleships bristling with cannons, point-defense systems, and spotters calling out your position to any interested bad guys who happen to be nearby.
    If you're a fighter pilot, be a fighter pilot: let the lumbering big-gun heavy hitters duke it out with each other. They hide behind warship shields and heavy armor plating anyway. Hunting them is about as interesting as space whaling. There are more fun targets out there to chase that actually give you a better challenge.

    Hyperdrive equipped starfightets don't make sense for factions that can field carrier groups. It made sense for the Rebels becauae they often couldn't do that. Hyperdrive equipped starfighters made logistical sense for their stateless strategy and their hit-and-run tactics.

    Not just plot armor. Any one wanting to fly a starfighter should have incredibly fast and precise, arguably perfect, reflexes, awareness, and other piloting skills. Also your aim, judgement, and instincts (the first is self exploratory, but for the second and third I mean when to engage, when to pull off, etc) has to be extremely good or even perfect. Very few, if any, humans have all of these. And that's before looking at aliens with better ones and or using the Force. I'd say less than 10%, less than 5% more likely, of the populace has these IMO absolutely necessary talents, skills, and knowledge, as well as experience in them, to be a starfighter pilot. For everyone else, and quite possibly even for these "perfect candidates", it is a death sentence.
