Huh that's odd? Let me just check those numbers real quick....a 2019 Ford Mustang GT MSRP is $35,355 and the year they gave was 2015 which adjusted for inflation a GT is $35,531 (oh that's actually a little more expensive than a current model). What about a 2005 model adjusted for inflation which is another time they said was at the height of the model? $35,252, well I'll be damned if it's almost as if prices haven't really become too high. It's almost as if humans are really bad at adjusting themselves to inflation as they age and so they lock themselves into what prices were when they were when they first started to pay for stuff on their own and think stuff should always cost that much the rest of their lives. It's why people in their 80's complain about how gas used to cost $.50/gal even though at $2.15/gal it's still the same price. Not to mention all cars have a crap ton more standard nowadays than they used to. The real reason that those cars are losing sales is that they haven't had model refreshes (even the model refreshes 4 years ago were barely a facelift) and the Challenger is only selling so well cause of stuff like the Demon. @@TomHarrisonJr I don't think it's so much that they have lost interest in sedans and coupes as much as interest is just going back to what they always have been. Interest was artificially inflated from 2007-8 until a few years ago because of high fuel cost and people just not having great options for what to do about it. Now that SUVs/Crossovers are getting good enough gas mileage and electrics are an option and gas is as cheap as it's ever been people are just going back to the vehicles they got rid of back when gas was $4/gal.

Put this new Mustang SUV up against the last Generation Petrol Coup version -- I guarantee you this will win. This is also not the only "Mustang" version being built. I would buy this... who cares about the name? Trust me. One thing -- Mustang refers to horses. There is no horses in this car. That saddens me.
@@infectedmethod You completely and totally missed my point. I like Electric Vehicles. Ford should have built an Electric Version of the Mustang Sports Car. Small do it yourselfers on you-tube have built EV Versions and they do not have Ford's $Billions of R & D and Industrial might behind them.

Indeed. That's a good idea. I think though since the electric version is more of a feminine appearing vehicle. Could call it the mare (female horse). Perhaps make a mustang themed pickup totally different from the f150. Call that the stallion. And then the mustang in the middle. That would be a complete horse fleet

Agreed, but a Prius has crap performance/fun, whereas this "thing" is actually fast. IDK that the "mustang" name fits though. You do have to adapt and I would've been fine if they made an EV sport coupe with the Mustang name, but a crossover isn't right.

They have sold out their production numbers for the first year. It could mean you are out of touch. Though I am not a fan of the mustang e. I do think it is a brilliant move on Ford's part. This is the only way the company will stay out of bankruptcy during the coming recession. Their stock has already dropped to $4 per share, soon to be $1.5 per share thanks to Tesla. I don't think their car will stack up with the model y, but the name badge will help bring in buyers and keep them afloat.
Let me see if I get this right...an EV has 30% of the operational cost (gas & oil vs electricity), 15% of the maintenance cost (no trans, radiator, gear shift, etc.), has a parts count for the entire car equal to a modern 8-spd auto trans., is FASTER than a Shelby GT350, is AWD (I live in the snow), and has only wheel bearings and the main rotor bearings as wearable parts. Oh, and gasoline is a limited-supply that will run out in 3-4 decades. And Ford execs are out of touch? This car is the only thing that will allow Ford to keep making gas Mustangs.
Consumers: Yeah if we could just get an old school mustang, but electric... Ford: Okay we hear you, so y’all want an electric mustang SUV that looks nothing like a mustang

Ford thinks that by giving something the 'MUSTANG' name, it will automatically result in huge sales of that vehicle. If Ford called a bicycle , the 'Mustang', do you think that bicycle would suddenly be selling like crazy? Nope.
You would think the old-timey design engineers were just throwing a tantrum about having to step out of their comfort zone and don't want you to actually buy it. Being tone deaf & trying to keep the market stuck in the past isn't exactly out of character for American auto manufacturers.
The interest in two-door coupes is still there, we just can't afford them anymore! We're not driving FWD hot hatches because of preference, they're just the only "sporty" cars we can buy at a young age
Hot hatches are cool, except in US. Your loss I guess. We prefer corners, not just short drag races. (But then again, an electric will almost always deal to a gas car at the lights anyway)
This will flop. This will destroy the Mustang brand (the brand which is a single car like the 911 is to Porsche). Elon Musk is doing a tap dance right now because he's going to own Ford in another 10 years once their stock prices plummet into oblivion. These kind of moves sink companies. This will be in future marketing textbooks as a highlighted case study of what not to do. Hello 25% additional market share for Tesla.
I tell you one (of) the things, that I think some of the Garbage Trucks are missing and i think we are able to bring - is that soul. That other Garbage Trucks don't have - they have no emotion. And the Mustang Garbage Truck is all about emotions.
Webasto Lithium, even has a 6speed Manual. Specs include 850hp & 1,000lbft, 75kwh Battery, GT350 suspension and brake package. Though Electric Muscle cars realy should have a custom design very tough 3 Speed widely spaced gears. Ford should of built sold that yesterday.
Ford is doing horribly bad in China, they are looking for something to hit. Electric has unbelievable amounts of pick up. I have no idea if Ford can get the technical side right or do right by their branding, but competition is good.
ok, so what else does Ford have to compete with the "Cult of Elon"? ??? please enlighten us already oh Great One of marketing genius. BTW I own a Mustang GT and a 1991 LTD Crown Victoria, love both. @@matthewschiebout7384 Shelby version is coming. If the Mach-E GT Performance can match a Shelby GT500 from the line, a Shelby Mach-E ought to drop the old fashioned fossil Shelby hard.
Of course they are. It’s the same basic people who say their car has a “V4.” It’s the same people who wonder what fluid to put into their “710” cap. The Mustang name is a legacy created by 55 years of best tuners like Shelby, Saleen and Roush. These cars are fast loud and awesome! This creates a barrier to entry so basics don’t buy them . They want to buy awesome cars but they’re too scared, too practical and too boring. The Ford “Mustang” Mach-e isn’t the first time a brand has sold its soul for a price. Porsche did this with their atrocious SUV and really send Ferdinand rolling with their hideous Panamera. Basic-a$$ Volkswagens with Porsche badges glued on them. The name Porsche use to be synonymous with purebred sports car. I no longer see the Porsche brand the same way I see the Ferrari brand. They’re automatic transmission having status symbols for soccer moms. What it boils down to is a huge insult to the engineers, designers, tuners, builders and hobbyists that have made the Mustang the legendary nameplate it is today. It’s an insult to the 55 years of executive decision to keep the name “Mustang” pure instead of selling it out to other vehicle types in the name of profit.
Mr Oiram46, Because they are being run by, dare I say it, morons that have zero real world experience. Whoever made this particular decision has no connection whatsoever with the iconic Mustang or the people who love it.
Tom McWilliams Yeah, I think they aren’t even into car culture, CEO’s of traditional car brands should be into car culture as one of the main qualifications.
Robert Blackford The Ford Probe would have been the successor to the Fox body if it weren’t for the fans voicing their opinion. I own 2 Mustangs, this is my opinion. It’s a great EV crossover, but it is not a Mustang.
EXACTLY! I shot mt.dew outta my nose when I heard "an electric, 4-door, crossover". I get the idea of the Mustang eventually being powered by an electric motor, but this is a COMPLETELY different vehicle and should be named as such
None of this explains why they are calling this a mustang. If they wanted an electric mustang, they should have dropped a couple electric motors and a ton of batteries in a mustang.
The body is closer to a Focus or Escape, but people might think it was cheap or had an ordinary engine. Mustang just confuses further, but it's a positive connotation.
They really think they can leverage the Mustang fanbase to get instant love for this EV and that's so lazy to me. The least they could've done was style it after a retro Mustang somewhat like Volkswagon is doing for their EV bus.
Robert Blackford Yes, but it’s in spite of the name, not because of it. It honestly looks like a great car, it just shouldn’t be called a mustang. I can’t take credit for it, but someone on another video said they should have called it the Galax-E or just the Mach E and both of those would have been much more appropriate names
Robert Blackford A) chill out with the tone, I’m not being negative or anything. B) people are buying it because it’s the first affordable electric crossover to hit the market that looks really nice (I personally can’t stand the Kona). My two friends who have ordered a Mach E did it because they didn’t want to wait for a Model Y (and honestly didn’t love the single screen experience) and didn’t want to pay the premium for an X, E Tron or I Pace. They didn’t buy it because it’s a mustang, they bought it because it’s the best choice on the market for their needs/wants. Also, not that it actually matters, but I drive a Model S, so I’m looking at this from the perspective of someone who’s both a huge Petrolhead and an EV owner. Again, the name isn’t really a negative, it’s just also not a positive in my view. I’m just glad Ford is selling tons of them. The sooner the vast majority of cars convert to electric the better

Eberhart and Tappenning founded it, but they only did so because GM trashed their incredibly geeky EV1 and went on the warpath to torpedo any chance of an American EV market. Musk was, in essence, their first and biggest Backer. Eb & Tap were still up in the air on their product. Elon _DID_ lead the development for the Roadster, which was the granddaddy of all other models, which made him the natural choice for chairman and CEO for both his investment in the company _and_ his biz skills. The dude does pack a physics AND econ degree. Last quarter, Ford (with it's government contracts) sold 580k total vehicles including pickups & cargo trucks, but only 77,000 were cars. Tesla sold 97,000 cars. *20k MORE THAN FORD* Think of it like this: If Eberhart and Tap were the Wright Brothers looking for an investor, then that investor turned out to be guru Howard Hughes. And Tesla sells every car it makes during it's model year. You won't find a green-sticker special at the Tesla lot that's been sitting there since 2017.
Ford 300 miles range for the Mach-E is a "target", just like Porsche had a 300 miles "target" and failed miserably to deliver. Both cars are using the same LG Chem batteries... Do you expect Ford to pull some sort of miracle here?

The title is: "Why Ford Is Risking Mustang To Take On Tesla". My take is: Ford is no position to 'Take On' anyone right now, so much less, the likes of Tesla. Like most other ICE companies they have squandered the time in past years heavily in denial of the future of EV's. What does Ford do? - the best thing they could do right now, which is to copy the Model-3/Y and put the spin of their iconic Mustang on it. I don't see it as a risk. On the contrary I see it as likely the best move they could have made given how little, actual risk they have taken. I do understand the hate for taking the name and putting it where many don't believe it belongs. But if Ford and others can't scrape out a foothold in the EV space, they are doomed. Again just my take - history will fill in the facts for us all.
I agree Dave , if they cant get out of the blocks with a great ev under the cover of one of their great brand names , then its probably curtains for Ford . Good luck with that , because i fear they are leaving their run to late . I dont wish for any electric vehicles to fail , but with the likes of companies like tesla setting the bar very high and dominating the ev market time is running out for these big oems . As in your last comment Dave , time will tell , to which i would wholeheartedly agree .
But they could have launched an electic coupe or sports sedan like the model 3 and called that Mustang and taken Tesla head on. Isn't that a more obvious ploy that would have got all Mustang owners plus Tesla model 3 owners considering that car? Now they have alienated the Mustang owners and the Tesla model 3 prospects.
Really expensive student loans, houses, electric cars, and overall lifestyle. Nope, please give me a 25 year old 4 banger Japanese car and reduce my driving needs down "occasional use". AWD + electric torque? Even Usain Bolt won't be able to escape! that power will easily spin all tires and still cause loss of control, probably worse because the steering will also have a mind of it's own also!

I mean it is low priced compared to the rest of the market. 26k brand new, which is likely negotiated down isnt bad considering most base model pickup trucks start around 28k to 30k, and suvs are more. The only new cars cheaper are compact cars and some sedans. But my 2016 sonata which i bought brand new was 26k though i negotiated it down a couple thousand. So the mustang, in my opinion, isn't too crazy in price for todays standards. Especially if you add the nostalgia and the fact that it stands out on the road.
The electric is awesome. The Tesla Model Y performance will have about the same acceleration, and low center of gravity as the GT. Why don't you arrange a test drive in 6 months, or wait for the Mach e, and go mash the pedal from a stop and see what happens.
My favourite Mustang styles were 1965 1/2 through 1972. The newer Mustangs followed the 1972 design which was great!. The newest mustangs have moved away from that design. This new concept SUV Mustang, is not a Mustang. It deserves a new name.
It wasn't click bait. The video does state quite well that they are going after Tesla cars and all the prefacing explains why this is a controversial move.

I was furious when GM killed the Firebird and Trans Am, then they killed Pontiac. All this happened because GM has for decades been so short-sighted and more worried about stock prices for the top executives. Now Ford wants to eat humble pie and follow GM's stupidity. I have no problem with electric vehicles, even an EV Mustang. However, I have hated this SUV craze, and am disgusted with Ford for polluting the Mustang name making an SUV Mustang. SHAME ON YOU FORD!
Yeah -- on top of that the Big 3 has discontinued all their cars. Now they are learning the hard way that people are still buying cars from the import brands. Some people will never drive SUV's or crossovers (I'm one of them).
whatever makes the money...pontiac made no money so it was chopped. this isn't the first time that ford has changed the fundemental design of the mustang. But dont worry, your V8 sports coupe still exists...for now
Robert Blackford the reason Pontiac was shut down was because GM wanted a bailout from years of stupid moves and wanted the government to pay for their short sighted decisions. The bailout also affected Saturn, HUMMER and SAAB. Pontiac lost its identity long before the bankruptcy, every car had been a cheap knock off of a GM product for a couple of decades prior. Maybe take your own advice and do some research first before opening up your mouth.
Robert Blackford apparently you didn’t know because if you did you would realize that GM would have to show the government that they were serious about turning the company around. Meaning GM would have to cut underperforming brands and focus on the ones actually making money. Also, doing due diligence and and coming to a decision before a purchase is how business and society functions, I’m not sure why you’re offended by that.
Robert Blackford so then since you know that was the terms of the bailout, why are you giving the executives a free pass? I guess it bears repeating that Pontiac has been a sub brand since the late 80s because of the executives incompetent and stagnant decisions. So then why should they have propped up a failing brand that hasn’t made much profit in a decade? But I guess blaming the government is the cool and easy thing to do I guess.
Ford had to use the a Mustang name to draw attention to EV’s especially against Tesla. Tesla has wonderful WiFi updates(important for self driving updates) and their Superchargers. Other manufacturers want government(taxpayers) or private sector to take care of charging stations. Most EV owners have home solar panels and only use home solar charging.
To be fair though, unless you have a massive rooftop, solar panels are nowhere near enough to charge an EV without supplement from the power grid. My house's array makes about 1kW at peak output on the average day, and EVs can and usually do charge many times faster than that.
exactly, it's the best Ford has to fight the Cult of Elon. And a Tesla isn't as great as they claim. Supercharger network is seriously lacking, $35k Model 3 was a cruel joke, service after sales is poor, they didn't see the shift to SUV's as quickly as the legacy automakers, CyberTrk is too radical and now it has come out that it's actually a 3/4 ton.
No, the nameplate “Mustang” isn’t the only thing Ford could “fight” Tesla with. “Bronco” is a legendary SUV name Ford could’ve resurrected and would’ve fit this vehicle much better than “Mustang.” Here’s some other names that work better: Falcon, Galaxy, Thunderbird, Explorer, Taurus, Ranger, just Mach-e, Model E (yes, ford owns that name and it’s the reason the Tesla Model 3 isn’t named Model E)...
Congratulations Ford on taking 55 years of heritage and giving it the middle finger. This SUV is NOT a Mustang and as far as using the Mach name on it is blasphemy.

Also, not that it actually matters, but I drive a Model S, so I’m looking at this from the perspective of someone who’s both a huge Petrolhead and an EV owner.

In fact, I want to live on a mountain near a stream with my dog and no people to bother me. Electricity? Not needed.
Should have just called it "Ford 1 - EV", Like going back to the beginning.
Or they could have just used "Model E" since they kept Tesla from using that.
I think "e-Edsel" would be a better fit.

That's not an emotion.
@@wyattmunger5529 I am giddy when my cell phone tells me that my Tesla has an update available. We, owners, run out to the garage to hit "yes" and read the software notes to see what present we got. THEJFLORES12 agree
So what is
I just bought a 17 ecoboost premium for 24k and only has 4k miles...id say thats an incredible deal if your willing to buy used because i also had a trade in so it ended up being around 19 so 300 a month
I bought a 1967 fastback for 900. Painted two houses one summer in 1978 to buy it. If only I would have known how much they appreciated in price.
They could have just redesigned the Escape to mimic the Mustang's look. That's what they did with the Fusion.
They shouldn’t have used the Mustang on a 4 door and electric motor!
They should have invented something new
The electric is awesome.

Should have been titled “A documentary on Mustang” instead of using Tesla as clickbait
trouble his documentaries use facts not wishful thoughts
It wasn't click bait. The video does state quite well that they are going after Tesla cars and all the prefacing explains why this is a controversial move.
"Why Ford is risking Mustang to take on electric cars" would have been a decent title, right?
There are no electric cars besides Tesla. I mean, okay, there are, but right now Tesla is the only game in town. Sorry, Bolt owners. Therefore "Why Ford is risking Mustang to take on Tesla" is also a decent title.

@@mxdanger yeah that's why Tesla is taking customers from other big car companies. Tesla isn't really just a car company it is also a tech company.
The problem isn't about being electric, is about being a SUV
Good bye Mustang, it was nice knowing you. What's next..... an electric Camaro pickup truck?
It doesn’t look anything like a Mustang! Should of named it something else.
I think it would have been better to call it a T-Bird or E-Bird if they really must go down this route !
Specialopsdave
Especially as most cars are charged at night.
exactly, it's the best Ford has to fight the Cult of Elon.
@@matthewschiebout7384 what is this Elon cult?
