Adrian Le Roy - Bransle de Poictou - Baritone Ukulele - Gut Strings

  • Adrian LeRoy composed for the Renaissance guitar, which had the same tuning as the baritone ukulele. Consequently, this LeRoy piece can be played straight on a baritone ukulele without any arranging. I’ve tuned to 392Hz “French Baroque” pitch, as that is likely the pitch LeRoy used. I’ve also reused my Pyramid gut strings from my guitar. The high e broke, but I noticed most of the string was in good condition, so I snipped off the ends. The guitar strings were only slightly wider in gauge than strings made specifically for a baritone ukulele, and they fit into the slots without issue.
If you're watching on a mobile device, please select the 720p quality option on the side or select "Request Desktop Site" which will get you full quality. For some reason, vertical videos sometimes default to 240p, but that is not representative of how I filmed (and the audio will be clearer).

Thanks, Mette! Glad to hear it, a few of my past vertical videos displayed in 240p only on the phone. I think it's because I'd uploaded in 4k, so I've been doing vertical in 1080p instead.

@@Josh.Vanjani That's weird. I haven't really thought about how my videos are displayed. Well I didn't think I could do something about it.
But I have noticed that YT display videos in a lower quality than 4k.

Gives it a much deeper sound on the baritone uke. Nicely done Josh.

Thanks, Steven! I was also tuned down a full step. I'm actually trying to arrange the Tarrega arrangement of Chopin's prelude on the baritone next. I've got about half of it done. It's basically the same as playing it on the guitar, but finding the higher octaves to substitute.

Very interesting to hear this one on baroque uke! I've heard it so many times from teaching over the years that it was extra nice to actually hear it in a new way. Nice work!

Thanks, Wyatt! I'm hoping this was closer to how it would have sounded in LeRoy's time, with a smaller bodied instrument, gut strings and the lower pitch. This would be a great piece for teaching because of the repetitive open D. In that way it reminds me a lot of Indian sitar music (like Ravi Shankar) that has the Tanpura, or drone instrument, repeating a similar note while the sitar plays a melody. Perhaps Eastern and Western music styles were more similar in the Renaissance.

Sounds great, sir. That baritone uku really does give a gut sting period sound. Well done!

Thanks, Brad! I agree, it's a bit closer in tone to a Romantic Era guitar. I just finished arranging the Chopin Prelude that Tarrega arranged for guitar this afternoon. I'd like to get it uploaded by Monday. I have a D'Addario string review currently scheduled, but I might move it to next week and be one week ahead for a change again.
