Original 1st Generation prototype English Pokémon names

- These are the beta, placeholder names Nintendo used in US promotions before the official Pokémon names were decided for Pokémon Red and Blue. I missed a few, but I couldn't find pictures for those, they are Att (Kabuto), Ptera (Aerodactyl) amongst others.
Interestingly of note the names were restricted to a seven character limit, perhaps suggesting that the developers had not differentiated the 7 character Trainer name limit with the 10 character Pokémon name limit in that point of the games' localization process where previously a global 5 character limit was used for Red/Green and Japanese Blue.
The music chosen is the unused legendary beasts theme from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire (thanks gamma3adhexius)
Koffing NY
Weezing LA
that killed me
"foxfire" Mozilla confirmed
More like Shippo from Inuyasha 😄
I personally like the idea of Aria and Ariella for Clefairy and Clefable, those are good nicknames. I also remember Marill from the 2nd gen being called Pikablu for a good time before the final name was decided. I had a TCG guide book that called Marill "Pikablu" for the entire book, although I got tired of it pretty fast because I had the book during the 2nd gen, lol.
fun fact: in German pokemon red and blue "Digda" is actually used as a name for diglett
Firefox? Now that is creative
Foxfire*
+Madz The 3rd and p.s, if you didn't made the typo, pokemon could have predicted the next browser in the world!
and now, this is a fake news article. I hope this is the news on pokemon on april fools day 2017
pokemon predicts next browser. world shocked and pokemon game freak employees baffled.
tokyo-japan, the founders of game freak were baffled when they predicted the next browser in 1996. Hypothesists(people who think about the aftermath) are hoping that microsoft and google will own pokemon and name their pokemon after their possessions.
really goddamn glad they changed these, although skulkraken is pretty cool
the majority sound like bootleg names...
Lucky is pretty damn appropriate for Chansey, you have to be awfully bloody lucky to catch one, especially with a Lucky Egg...
EXTREMELY WEIRD PARTS
0:51 Foxfire
1:52 MAN O WAR
2:01 Slowmo
2:14 Dodo
2:40 Orphon
2:56 NY
3:02 LA
3:43 EON???
Minecraft Travis Orphon because Cubone's mother died.
NY and LA because they are cities with pollution, a LOT.
Eon because all Eeveelutions finish with eon.
*Eonlutions
Man-O-War is the name of a type of Jellyfish, a very big one. Also it is a ship type from Portugal.
Slowmo because they are slow.
“Blaze”
Arcanine is WAY cooler.
They changed all of those uncreative names yet they didn't give Ninetales, Beedrill, Golem, Krabby, Mr. Mime and Seel better names.
2:41 YOU GET OUT AND YOU GET OUT NOW BETA POKEMON NAMES. NO.
BTW, Jigglypuff and wigglytuff's Protype names are pudding and custard.
I think that koffing is named NY from New York and weezing LA from Los Angeles. Both cities have so much pollution after all
Nic5 Cyprus well yeah
cubone was "Orphon"? i mean, we get the mom dies, but come on!
Orphon is the most clever name for something like Cubone.
Pikachu hit with recoil!
I:Where's that magnimite?!?!
Magneton*
With Eevee being originally named 'Eon' the suffixes at the ends of its evolutions suddenly make a lot more sense: Vapor'eon', Flar(e)'eon', Jolt'eon', ESP (Extrasensory Perception)-'eon', Umbr (Probably from Latin umbrāticus "in the shade", from umbra "shadow, shade"')-'eon'. And I don't care about the newer gen ones.
liked for "And I don't care about the newer gen ones."
Man o war lol
Many of these names aren't very creative.
Atleast we kept Ninetails
Probably because they’re placeholder names.
I wished they kept skull kraken for gyarados though
@@WasabiKitCat hey saw you from that other video with the unused vid
Gallop for rapidash wtf...
These would be fun nicknames.
New York and Los Angeles for Koffing and Weezing lmao!
3:34 Lapras = Ness
Ptera for Aerodactyl? Wait I'm French, and the french name of Aerodactyl IS Ptera xD Rattatak? French for Raticate is "Rattatac" x) Arbo, Ekans' french name is Abo.... Gallop (Rapidash), become Galopa in french, Spectre for "Spectrum", Lucky is the Japanese name of Chancey, and that's all :)
+DarkCelebi French has some cool names too like "Tortank" for Blastoise and "Dracofeu" which roughly translated into "Dragofire"
1:06 Flamie was name of my Infernape when I was like 6 lmao (spelled Flamey but still)
Arbo...
Foxfire..
Parasyte..
*Headshots the computer*
what about jigglypuff? heard its name was gonna be pudding...
I remember looking at the Pokemon Red/Blue promotional tape that show a sneak preview of the english version of Season 1 of Pokemon, They actually show the beta name for Pidgey, Pidge.
Wait... Tangela is Meduza? Meduza is a polish name of jellyfish!
Also in spanish
“Orphon”
Wow how subtle
That is if you spell subtle like this: *_S U B T L E_*
The diss on New York and Los Angeles with Koffing and Weezing's beta names will always be the funniest thing.
Here's more names from that poster mentioned in the comments section (some of these have been unfortunately shortened):
Metapod = "Kokoon" (error?)
Kakuna = "Metapod" (error?)
Ekans = "Nagahis" (probably "Nagahiss")
Arbok = "Nagaasp"
Sandslash = "Sandsto" ("Sandstorm")
Jigglypuff = "Pudding"
Wigglytuff = "Custard"
Oddish = "Ladish"
Poliwag = "Aqua"
Poliwhirl = "Aquanau" (probably "Aquanaut")
Poliwrath = "Aquamar" (probably "Aquamarine")
Farfetch'd = "Fowler"
Exeggcute = "Eggstre"
omg koffing is bill nye the science guy :)
tangela is medusa REALLY and poor orphan cubone...
3:38 thats what i nicknamed my lapras
Some of these names did find their way in some official media. I remember a store display showing off footage from the game using the name "Rattatak" and one of the Pokemon Power inserts in Nintendo Power using the name "Kung-Foo."
I have to admit, Aria and Ariala sounds so good compared to Clefairy and Clefable
I like to use these beta names as nicknames for Pokemon: Pidge, Stryke, Digda. I believe they are closer to the original Japanese names
Some of them are direct Japanese translations. For example, Rapidash is actually called Gallop in Japan, and Chancey is Lucky.
I have an old Pokemon TCG collectors' guide from before Gen II came out and it said something in the back of the book about a new Pokemon named Pikablu.
Tfw Ness
Ratattac(k) is the french name of Raticate, A(r)bo is the french name of Ekans, Gal(l)opa is the french name of Rapidash and Ptera is the french name of Aerodactyl. I think they were translated in French based on the beta names and not on the final names.
JE COMPRENDS.
In Russian ORT dub of anime Clafairy named Aria, and Clafable named Ariala.
Sorry for bad english.
It's like if Mario was renamed in the United States into "Guido."
Dumb Game Theorists think that Sans is Ness. Game Freak canonically named Lapras "Ness".
Yeah lapras is ness now
After Doduo showed up as "Dodo", I half-expected Dodrio to be "Dododo".
3:36 PK Flash!!
Oh man...imagine if these were really the names back then
@DynamiteDominique Right Lapras probably was being named Ness as a reference to Tessie from EarthBound. And yes I knew that Ape changed their name to Creatures Inc. I also heard that it could have been GameFreak as well.
Tonguetyd needs to be a Lickitung pre-evo.
JU-DOH I MISSED!
Yeah Cubone was supposed to be named orphan in the kapanese translation...and man o war is a poisionous DANGEROUS jellyfish somewhere not near me :D
@awerdef *sigh* There was a character in EarthBound named Tessie who showed a resemblance to Lapras. The name of the main Protagonist of EarthBound is NESS.
XD calling cubone orphan is so harsh, especially considering lavendar town in red and blue!
2:39 that was mean
SKULKRAKEN!?!? o.O
CONTINUED:
Exeggutor = "Eggscut" (probably "Eggscute")
Hitmonlee = "Lee" (may just be temp. shortening)
Hitmonchan = "Chan" (same case)
Tangela = "Medusa" (notice the lack of "z")
Ditto = "Morpho" (probably "Morphon")
Porygon = "Poregon" (may just be misspelling)
Some of these are the japanese name literally translated, just made the katakana, romanji, like Pidge, Coil or Orphon...
@Brad64LP Funny you should say that because Ape, the co developers of Earthbound. Changed their name to Creatures Inc. sometime after earthbounds release. And as you already know, Creatures Inc are the same people who Co develop all the Pokemon games. Thats right, the same people that made Earthbound also make all the pokemon games.
so good call on your part :D
Orphon... Makes sense for Cubone, given the "Cubone/MISSINGNO" theory...
3:11 MEDUZA FRIKING MEDUZA
@armandoduck Well, it didn't work well because the name "Kraken" is usually for giant squid/octopus monsters. Gyarados is sea dragon/serpent.
@ChickasaurusGL Also Xatu was going to be called "Xoqo" or "Xogo", while "Xatu" was Natu's name.
I gotta say, Man O War, Skulkraken and a few of the others are EPIC. However, most of the supposed protoype names suck. Coil? Recoil? Hocus and Pocus? Ju-doh? Jesus Christ..
Gengar's name was phantom me: Animal Jam references
The name Phantom was probably used in about 50 other games before that game even came out -_-
That came out way way before animal jam
am i the only one whose mind was blown finding out that lapras was based on the loch ness monster?
Kinda wish Tentacool was Jilly. Its fun to say..
@Brad64LP I'm aware of this. I was simply stating the fact that it may very have been named for the loch NESS monster (a.k.a. NESSie) du to the resemblence. *SIGH* back at ya
You forgot
Jigglypuff: Pudding
Wigglytuff: Custard
Drowzee: Sleeper
im really happy orphon isn't its name omg
i really liked aria though, a part of me wants that.
Well. In Russian dub of anime(at least in the "Clefairy and the Moon Stone" episode), the names "Aria" and "Ariella" were used instead of "Clefairy" and "Clefable". I didn't know why before I watched this video.
Foxfire? Now that would sound like a move garurumon would use
whenever I catch these pokemon....I give them these names as nicknames.....cause I'm COOL!
Kara-tee and kung-foo and man o war killed me
Omg, I just realized... NY (New York) evolves into LA (Los Angeles)! xD
Focus
pocus...
Man O War was an epic name for tentacruel!!! Should have kept it! :O
thx for the video because i have a pokemon party tomorrow and only know pikachu O_O anyways thx a lot :D
0:42 The kalos queen
Guardia means Guard in Spanish
2:40 The saddest pokemon ever!
my favorite are: aria, ariala, foxfire, jilly, man o war, recoil (because of magnemite;s prototype name), ny and la and skulkraken (which im REALLY sad didnt make it into the final game, because of the 10 charactor name limi, which IS 10 charactors
wow that WMM intro doe
Aria is a beautiful one
Omg Eon makes sense cuz all the eeveelutions end with eon!
koffing and weezing were originally named ny and la to show the pollution in new york and los angelos. Not the best idea when starting a new gaming franchise. thank god they changed it.
Game Theory: LAPRAS IS NESS
I posted the pudding and custard comment, because I already knew the names and this video didn't have them... -_-
@SuperGambler10
some of these names really are english prototypes
I lost it at Jilly
Raticate is called Rattatac in french
was the skullraken(gyryados)shiny?Also aren't the omas blue? Pla
So Lapras used to be Ness? What? I'm probably guessing EarthBound there.
Theres a copy of red i believe that was found (theres a vid up on here) where pidgey comes up as pidge.
and LA (Los Angeles) evolves into OB (Olsenboye)! epic fail!!!! Dualstar Entertainment is located in Los Angeles and is owned by Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen.
first generation pokemon = epic
5th generation pokemon = WTF is this shit!
i can confirm this
I lol'd at Ess, Kargo (Omanyte and Omastar)
...orphon...poor cubone
Dragoon!! LOL that name end up being used for Beyblades!
Cubone = Orphon
Orphan.
It has no parents. It wears its mother's skull. :(
Who else didn’t search for this
1:04 Flamie pull that shit up
