  • In this video I take my newly purchased Yamaha MT-125 for one of it's first spins and compare it to my previous Honda CBF 125.
    The MT-125 is a refined learner legal naked bike with enough horsepower to keep up with dual caridgeway traffic, let alone city traffic.

    I just replaced the top end on my cbf125. New piston and bore. £60. Going to try an in line fuel filter and heat shielding to stop the summer overheating problem. The MT-125 remains a dream!

      LabGorilla Nice one, what is the reason for the new piston and bore? I saw that fuel filter mod to be a popular option for the cbf.

      125cc Biker last November whilst on the A10, I experienced a loss of power and it sounded like the piston rings had gone. Mechanic told me to scrap the bike and that he’d give me £300 for it. During lockdown I decided to learn how to do a top end swap. Took the engine out completely and changed top end, all gaskets , and valve seals. First ride yesterday and all looks good. The old piston had scored the barrel and I was getting fuel my oil. So now it’s a case of trying the fuel filter and heat shielding to see if I can help prevent overheating and/or gunk getting into the fuel pump.

      LabGorilla Great that you proved the mechanic wrong, I think most are lazy, not resourceful and after the money only. On the cbf I remember my hands and arse were numb after a longer journey. That overheating is a pain !

    The Mt125 speedo is very optimistic!! Indicated 70mph is 63mph gps. The digital dash is notorious for water ingress and failing. And laughably the seat isn’t waterproof so when it rains or you wash the bike it soaks up water. I loved my 2018 MT125 but these issues are poor coming from a main brand in the bike trade. Agree that it is the best 125 offering tho, but the cbf125, cb125f etc still offer a more honest expectation of what a 125 is.

    Tail tidy and a nice ricer can it’ll feel and look like a different machine mate! Love these bikes. Best 125 money can buy! (Although owning one makes me a little bias maybe) 😉 ride safe brother man!

    I do like my CBF a lot but it can be a bit of an effort compared to something "premium" like the CB125R or MT125. Not many mod cons on a CBF, very basic bike for getting from A to B. Tyres suspension and brakes are poor/mediocre at best compared to other small japanese bikes. On the positive side it is very very easy to do the maintenance which you regularly have to do on a CBF like oil change/topup and other checks & adjustments, plus the bike is very reliable. I still don't think it is better at it's job than the old CG125 & GN125 though, there's far more to break on a CBF. I've had to glue the crappy plastic mudguard already.

    • @125ccbiker9
      @125ccbiker9  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah if you own a CBF then its a perfectly capable bike, funny that you mention oil "topup" given that it burns oil. The valve cover has far more access to do the valves on the CBF, that I have missed!

      @@125ccbiker9 I agree! Mine is a 2013 with 3,920 on the clock as of today and i got it at 3,000 miles with fresh oil a couple of months ago, already burning about 10-20ml every couple of hundred miles to be honest. I just threw in 100ml to get a headstart on it. Yeah you have to remove plastics to do the valves which is a bit of a hassle so I havent done it yet, but it's nothing compared to more modern bikes like that 4 valve MT i suppose
      The oil burning thing is probably due to it being air cooled which is a nuisance. I would've preferred a watercooled PCX scooter now in hindsight but the CBF was cheap as chips and the gearbox is now smooth as butter with my loving touch so no real regrets there

      @@lordracula2461 The air cooling isn't bad unless its baking outside. That seems like a lot of oil burning. have you checked for any leakage from the dipstick, crankcase? what grade of oil are you using?

    • @lordracula2461
      @lordracula2461 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@125ccbiker9 It wont be as much as that to be honest i'm just exaggerating a bit, I did see the level drop slightly over 500 miles so I suspect some slight burning going on. Spark plug looks quite lean too. The oil is what the garage I bought the bike from put in it before I bought it, probably just gonna use the cheap 10w40 £1 / litre stuff I got from tesco next oil change & filter clean

    You need to change the stock exhaust for a black widow blue tip 200mm. That stock sounds like a lawn mower!!

    Nice bike. Totally different animal to the cbf. Different financial bracket. The water cooling is great. Wish I could afford it. What revs do you do at 70?

    • @125ccbiker9
      @125ccbiker9  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like 8000.10000 being redline. It’s also brilliantly comfortable at that speed, it’s like doing 20 on the CBF aside from the wind blast.

    Hi. What do you recommend in 2020?

    • @125ccbiker9
      @125ccbiker9  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Piotr Cierkosz if you have license limitations to 125cc then this bike is excellent. Does everything you need it to do, it has ABS which is rarely seen on this capacity of bike

      @@125ccbiker9 Sorry, I was not precise enough - I am looking for my first ride for A license(next month should be getting L-permit).
      There are so many 125's available and it is hard to choose. Would you recommend going with something like Yamaha Mt125, Honda CB125R or Suzuki GSXS would do the job?

    • @125ccbiker9
      @125ccbiker9  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mrCierek The bikes that you stated are all great, its just a matter of personal opinion and needs. For me, insurance cost was incredibly influential. Its worth checking how much certain bikes are to insure. The Honda CBR 125R will have a harsher seating position compared to the other two naked bikes.
      There is little difference between these premium 125, get the one you like best !
