I shredded those things to bits in no time. People were saying they hold up for years, idk how. The only way that is possible is if you do nothing. Guys of all ages wore Timberland boots as casual wear instead of sneakers. A few years later they were being worn in New York City along with the Adidas Superstar sneaker.

I’m very glad I purchased my lugz from a goodwill and not somewhere where I’d have paid full price. They’re a pair a steel toe wedge work boots, the fake leather and lack of any gusset makes them bad for spark protection, for some reason they lack a shank, Have essentially zero puncture resistance, and occasionally the fabric on the inside bunches up weird on the steel toe, kinda uncomfortable. I could only really afford cheap boots when I bought them a few months ago, and I’ll probably keep wearing them for the next 6 months or so until they completely wear out, and I’m forced to buy an actual pair of workboots

Lugz must’ve gone downhill over the years. I had a pair in Jr high school and they were decent quality. They weren’t a timberland rip off, they had their own style along with Karl Kani.
I love the Drifter and i have worn in hard working conditions for years at a time. I started wearing then in early 2000s and they have never done wrong by me.

I got a blue pair of Lugz just for hiking, but it is sturdy, warm not stuffy, support to arches, good with jeans, i wear it all the time now. The blue collar started to peel, I just pulled them all off, they have white collars now, still comfortable.
The lugs had the wood block in the heel probably because it was made using direct heat vulcanizing process. That is the traditional way to make full rubber sole by this method, the wood block is there to fill the the middle part. Without a wood block the rubber under your heel can't get enough heat to cure. Obviously you can't use a bouncy/soft foam in there because the shoes will be pressed in the machine, and that pressure will compress the block. Once the mould opens the block will try to return to its original form effectively ripping the rubber from the upper. Almost spit my coffee while watching the band saw
I bought the Timberland Port Unions and actually had to make up my own lacing. The standard lacing dug into the lateral edge of my ankle on both (behind the lateral maleolus) it almost crippled me. I noticed others complaining about the same thing and brought there's back. Mine work fine with alternative lacing.
I also had a pair of steel toed Irish Setters I bought in 2000. They fit perfectly off the rack. I used to ride in them. After about 12 years I went looking for a new pair and no one had them anymore. I took them with me to a Redwing store and the guy said to me, These are a WWI boot cut. They don't make them like this anymore. I took them to a cobbler and for $100 he re-soled them with a vibram sole. I still got them.
I'm kind of honored I didn't think anything more would come from that comment and it's so awesome that it did. Also glad that I didn't buy those lugs I thought for $30 they be okay winter beaters but no way they'd survive.
I bought a couple Lugz boots and have had no issues with them. I DONT wear them as a work boot and don't wear them everyday. Keep shoes trees in them when not using....
i bought a pair of Lugz Chukka in 2000, and they are the most comfortable show i have ever owned. no wear, no cuts no seems failing, just perfect. im sure they are made in china by now and wont last past a year, but these were really nice shoes. the soles have not worn at all, its amazing.
Gotta say Weston, i agree with the fake leather statement. It should a law to state whether a shoe is fake or bonded leather compared to full grain actual leather. Companies try to pull this nonsense of constantly and it really burns me up! Back in the day you could tell. But new methods and materials trick consumers now into thinking they are buying a quality item. Happens in way too many products!! Great content as always. The 6 inch premium timberland boot is a great value for what you get as far as I'm concerned. Most boots that last longer than them cost significantly more.
I’ve on occasion had to buy cheap boots from target (had trouble affording a certain type of boots to wear to street fairs) for some weird reason they lasted over 10 years (rarely got wet) and were super comfortable walking/standing on the streets for long hours (4-9). Long ago Ross would sell some pretty good boots. I think many were styles that the company was doing some sort of PR on (before everything was computerized). I managed to get some really cool, odd fryes made of really great leather. They survived being resoled! The only Timberland shoes I have are slip on high tops (for some reason high tops can be hard to find in women’s sizes). They are way more supportive and comfortable than my fancy converse (both have similar insoles)…. For boots I save my money and drop $$$$.
Lugz are my favorite boots tbh but maybe when I can afford more expensive boots my opinion will change. But in MD nobody notices or cares if they are real. And I get compliments! I always buy the black boots
Back in the day when Rockports were still made in Portugal and had Gore-tex in them a buddy of mine tried to compare his timbers to my boots and a few months later his boots completely fell apart. The sole completely came apart and they were completely hollow. I told him they were just fashion boots but he wouldn't listen. Too bad Rockports have also become a fashion boot 😥.
When I was in highschool I had a pair of sketchers that I later learned were Timberland knock offs. They lasted me till graduation and I don't think I actually wore them out. I don't remember what happened to them but they lasted longer than any other pair of shoes I wore growing up. I wasn't big on all the shoe brands back then so to me they were just a pair of comfy boots.
I lived in Ballston Spa, NY winter of '85-'86. Not sure I would have made it through that winter if it weren't for my pair of Timberlands keeping my feet warm and dry. Only wore them out and about Off duty. Had to wear my Navy issue chukkas at work. IYKYK
Had two pairs of Lugz back around 2015. Both had the soles crack in half within a few months of everyday wear. Lugz replaced the first pair and didn’t bother to respond to my second pair failing.
You could try to cut Lumberjack boots or Panama Jack to see if the quality is better than Timberland. However they cost over 100$, so they aren't much cheaper.
I had a girlfriend from NYC who always insisted I wear Tims. I didn’t realize they are/were some New York icon. They never stood up to actual work conditions though and I’m happy with my Red Wings.
I have the Lugz Convoys in blue. I wouldn't get the wheat color because knockoff Timberlands are corny, but blue boots aren't super common and they were cheap, so why not? I gotta say, they're tougher than I would have guessed. You definitely know you're not making a lifelong investment here, but they're decent for what they are, and they look pretty sharp. They have other weird colors, too - bright red, black with white soles, etc. Probably worth the 50 bucks for the novelty value if you're into that sort of thing.
i have a pair of knock offs from mckinley. ive had them for a couple years, my brother before me and, so far, they've been holding up really well never got wet or cold feet
You should do Project Farm-style durability & quality tests for a variety of footwear. For example, subject the outsole to a belt sander for a durability comparison.
So glad to hear someone else that understands how truly bad fake leather is for the environment, among many other reasons it just sucks. I hate the hypocracy from people who think they're doing better by buying fake. It's all marketing gimmicks
My Timberlands had the timberland tree as the sole pattern, you can’t fake that footprint, they were completely lined in good leather, bought them in ‘81, lasted till about ‘95.
making a mold that can release easy is an efficiency thing, and its probably cheaper to throw in a chunk of wood than design a mold with holes in the heel that will release fast and easy.
I got a pair of Lugz around 2002 because they advertised them all the time on Monday Night Raw and as a rambunctious 17 year old who dove head first into the bling-era rap culture, they were the shoes to have. I remember showing up to school with them feeling like king shit.

I owned a pair of Lugz back in the year 2000 when I was 19 years old. Real genuine leather, very comfortable, warm, water resistant, and I got many years of wear out of them, on almost a daily basis. Fast forward 19 years, to the year of our good lord, in 2019. Bought my second pair of Lugz. I didn't even get many DAYS of good wear out of them, much less, many good years. MOF I believe they were the same exact model you just reviewed, and I bought them from Ross, "Dress for Less." Dress for less alright....dress for less time to wear them. If memory serves me the first sole fell off, after about a week. Notice I said the "first" sole. Oh yes, that's right, I tried to glue it back on with contact cement, and get my $50 out of them. It wasn't until the second sole came off, and left me standing barefoot in the wet street, that I started to think that maybe that wasn't going to happen after all.
so those lugz specifically are mimicking timberlands, but some of the other styles of shoes they made (and still make) are really cool. they are specifically aimed at hip hop culture, but to be even more specific, they were kinda going for a chicago r&b type of vibe. like if you look up old 90's music videos of the rap group "do or die" you'll see what im talking about. im sure if you're actually working construction you'll want a better boot, but if you just want some cool shoes for cheap lugz were pretty good!

That is the traditional way to make full rubber sole by this method, the wood block is there to fill the the middle part. Without a wood block the rubber under your heel can't get enough heat to cure.
Obviously you can't use a bouncy/soft foam in there because the shoes will be pressed in the machine, and that pressure will compress the block. Once the mould opens the block will try to return to its original form effectively ripping the rubber from the upper.

I bought the Timberland Port Unions and actually had to make up my own lacing. The standard lacing dug into the lateral edge of my ankle on both (behind the lateral maleolus) it almost crippled me. I noticed others complaining about the same thing and brought there's back. Mine work fine with alternative lacing.

I also had a pair of steel toed Irish Setters I bought in 2000. They fit perfectly off the rack. I used to ride in them. After about 12 years I went looking for a new pair and no one had them anymore. I took them with me to a Redwing store and the guy said to me, These are a WWI boot cut. They don't make them like this anymore. I took them to a cobbler and for $100 he re-soled them with a vibram sole. I still got them.

I bought a couple Lugz boots and have had no issues with them. I DONT wear them as a work boot and don't wear them everyday. Keep shoes trees in them when not using....
i bought a pair of Lugz Chukka in 2000, and they are the most comfortable show i have ever owned. no wear, no cuts no seems failing, just perfect. im sure they are made in china by now and wont last past a year, but these were really nice shoes. the soles have not worn at all, its amazing.
Gotta say Weston, i agree with the fake leather statement. It should a law to state whether a shoe is fake or bonded leather compared to full grain actual leather. Companies try to pull this nonsense of constantly and it really burns me up! Back in the day you could tell. But new methods and materials trick consumers now into thinking they are buying a quality item. Happens in way too many products!! Great content as always. The 6 inch premium timberland boot is a great value for what you get as far as I'm concerned. Most boots that last longer than them cost significantly more.
I’ve on occasion had to buy cheap boots from target (had trouble affording a certain type of boots to wear to street fairs) for some weird reason they lasted over 10 years (rarely got wet) and were super comfortable walking/standing on the streets for long hours (4-9). Long ago Ross would sell some pretty good boots. I think many were styles that the company was doing some sort of PR on (before everything was computerized). I managed to get some really cool, odd fryes made of really great leather. They survived being resoled! The only Timberland shoes I have are slip on high tops (for some reason high tops can be hard to find in women’s sizes). They are way more supportive and comfortable than my fancy converse (both have similar insoles)…. For boots I save my money and drop $$$$.
You should do cut-in-halfs with formal dress shoes. There are a lot of famous brands out there but we don't know what's in their guts.
Lugz are my favorite boots tbh but maybe when I can afford more expensive boots my opinion will change. But in MD nobody notices or cares if they are real. And I get compliments! I always buy the black boots

Back in the day when Rockports were still made in Portugal and had Gore-tex in them a buddy of mine tried to compare his timbers to my boots and a few months later his boots completely fell apart. The sole completely came apart and they were completely hollow. I told him they were just fashion boots but he wouldn't listen. Too bad Rockports have also become a fashion boot 😥.

When I was in highschool I had a pair of sketchers that I later learned were Timberland knock offs. They lasted me till graduation and I don't think I actually wore them out. I don't remember what happened to them but they lasted longer than any other pair of shoes I wore growing up. I wasn't big on all the shoe brands back then so to me they were just a pair of comfy boots.

I lived in Ballston Spa, NY winter of '85-'86. Not sure I would have made it through that winter if it weren't for my pair of Timberlands keeping my feet warm and dry. Only wore them out and about Off duty. Had to wear my Navy issue chukkas at work. IYKYK
Had two pairs of Lugz back around 2015. Both had the soles crack in half within a few months of everyday wear. Lugz replaced the first pair and didn’t bother to respond to my second pair failing.

You could try to cut Lumberjack boots or Panama Jack to see if the quality is better than Timberland.
However they cost over 100$, so they aren't much cheaper.

I have the Lugz Convoys in blue. I wouldn't get the wheat color because knockoff Timberlands are corny, but blue boots aren't super common and they were cheap, so why not? I gotta say, they're tougher than I would have guessed. You definitely know you're not making a lifelong investment here, but they're decent for what they are, and they look pretty sharp. They have other weird colors, too - bright red, black with white soles, etc. Probably worth the 50 bucks for the novelty value if you're into that sort of thing.

The BHPC "Shank" is definitely a folder fastener, repurposed. I haven't seen one of those since I was a kid, so yeah a kid can bend those easily.
You should do Project Farm-style durability & quality tests for a variety of footwear. For example, subject the outsole to a belt sander for a durability comparison.
So glad to hear someone else that understands how truly bad fake leather is for the environment, among many other reasons it just sucks. I hate the hypocracy from people who think they're doing better by buying fake. It's all marketing gimmicks
My Timberlands had the timberland tree as the sole pattern, you can’t fake that footprint, they were completely lined in good leather, bought them in ‘81, lasted till about ‘95.

making a mold that can release easy is an efficiency thing, and its probably cheaper to throw in a chunk of wood than design a mold with holes in the heel that will release fast and easy.
I got a pair of Lugz around 2002 because they advertised them all the time on Monday Night Raw and as a rambunctious 17 year old who dove head first into the bling-era rap culture, they were the shoes to have. I remember showing up to school with them feeling like king shit.

I have never bought lugz but see them advertised all the time on Facebook. I looked at their website a few times but never ordered any. Timberlands are popular here (Iowa) as well, lots of my co-workers wear them. They are about as popular as New Balance and Sketchers.

I owned a pair of Lugz back in the year 2000 when I was 19 years old. Real genuine leather, very comfortable, warm, water resistant, and I got many years of wear out of them, on almost a daily basis. Fast forward 19 years, to the year of our good lord, in 2019. Bought my second pair of Lugz. I didn't even get many DAYS of good wear out of them, much less, many good years. MOF I believe they were the same exact model you just reviewed, and I bought them from Ross, "Dress for Less." Dress for less alright....dress for less time to wear them. If memory serves me the first sole fell off, after about a week. Notice I said the "first" sole. Oh yes, that's right, I tried to glue it back on with contact cement, and get my $50 out of them. It wasn't until the second sole came off, and left me standing barefoot in the wet street, that I started to think that maybe that wasn't going to happen after all.

so those lugz specifically are mimicking timberlands, but some of the other styles of shoes they made (and still make) are really cool. they are specifically aimed at hip hop culture, but to be even more specific, they were kinda going for a chicago r&b type of vibe. like if you look up old 90's music videos of the rap group "do or die" you'll see what im talking about. im sure if you're actually working construction you'll want a better boot, but if you just want some cool shoes for cheap lugz were pretty good!
I have lugs from like 8 years ago i usually just wear them in the winter time but they are not my work boots so i really only wear them like 10 or 20 times a year. They must have been built better back in the day then they are now.
