The guys showed me a lot about the commercial crabbing business and what it takes to catch crabs on a regular basis. We worked in Shell Beach Lousiana where Robert and his family have a long history of fishing.

Crabbing is tough! The crabbers here ( Georgia coast ) has shipped all of there catch to Maryland for years.
People think Maryland produces so many crabs. They get them from us lol
Up in Maryland we don’t use ice just thick gloves and our pots got iron on the bottom I guess the tide runs a lot harder up here
They put pieces of rebar in them to hold them down but yes a 2ft tide range is top end here. Unless there is a storm in the Gulf in which they usually go pick their traps up.
Fishing crabs was hard on me, but I loved it.

Yes depending on how many you catch we would usually get about 100# of factory every two days pays for fuel

No more than 3
At least 8 hours, no more than 3. They will start dropping the legs.

Jax lost a young crabber last year. Near a bridge where his boat was seen doing circles with nobody onboard. So terrible.
An awesome community but impenetrable. I would love to get onboard for at least 14 days and start to network with this next generation coming through. A license will eventually be available one day I keep telling myself. Meanwhile I’m figuring out this biomass in the St Johns with snares and 5 Rec traps. I just can’t sell them so it’s all #1’s on the boat phahah

Yeah we don’t use ice NY we dump in totes and cull em out fast with tongs , I’ve never had luck changing there temps too much , risky

A lot of hard work for their catch. I see why the number 1 are priced higher. Especially when you start eating them less work more meat.
You are absolutely right I was working in prince william county va next to Manassas va in may last year and there was an old time seafood store there and we’d stop well 3 of us everyday and get a doz each and being where we was you’d a thought that they would be from right up the street in Chesapeake bay but the owner said 80% of blue crab comes from Louisiana and we were paying 83$ a dozen steamed

@@OutsidetheLevees the owner straight up told me and the guys that work with me he said the blue crabs are depleted very bad in the bay but people you are not getting blue crabs from maryland or Chesapeake most come from the south do your own research you’ll see
Does anyone catch crabs using a trotline ? Or is it illegal in Louisiana? Just wondering used to run a trotline in Maryland miss those days. Thanks for the videos
Yep, fishing with chicken legs on a string under a bridge near buffalo bayou. got careless and the blue was so fast grabbed my thumb. really cut me deep. yep very strong and quick

I’m really not sure. I think it has more to do with salinity levels than geography

Our Maryland crabs are a tad sweeter but Louisiana crabs are great as well. Those #1s looked great
It’s funny because Maryland is the biggest market for our crabs. I wonder if people don’t quite know the difference with all the mixing of the markets

What the crabber said was that many of their crabs get shipped up that way and presumably sold as Maryland crabs when they are in fact from Louisiana. With that going on how does one really know the difference in taste? Hell we have a difference in taste even amongst different salinity levels here.

Hey brother they do not sell to the public. Much easier for them to sell to a large distributor
Awwwe...that's why the prices were reasonable!! Your friends do all the hard work and the distributors screw the rest of the world!!! It's too bad they couldn't find a few people like me to sell to. Raise the prices a little bit make a little more money and Make a lot of people stuck in the middle of the United States very happy with fresh crab at reasonable prices!!!
My family used to do this back in the 80's. Some of my friends still doing it. I remember the price of crabs back then was 30 cents a pound for a long time.I can't do it because of seasickness. It's a rough job.

I go crabbing on the docks in SC and we go by the tide charts does that apply to commercial crabbing? Any tips for dock crabbing.
I can only speak on my knowledge of it. Here in coastal Louisiana 2 feet of tide range is A LOT. I believe y'all have much more of a range. A falling tide is typically best. Really any tide is better than none. I assume you are using nets. Should be able to do well off the dock.

A friend in fla pays $45/doz. I have 4 traps I set off the beach when I’m on vacation. Snorkel out to bring in. Only keep enough for me. Give away the rest. Nothing like fresh crabs. Y’all work a lot harder

Have never seen anyone dump crabs in ice water after catching them. Seems like that would put them in shock and die
It makes them go dormant. They do not die. You should try it
In warm weather icing them briefly will be beneficial for their survival
i catch the best crabs on the planet in the patuxent river n maryland. mustard is sweater then any other blue crab. meat is sweater to. crabbing is so much fun. you southerns boil your crabs which is weird.
I like them any kind of way but yes boiled is preferred. I respect the steam and Old Bay as well.
Man this is so awesome! I always love crabbing videos and would love to tag along in one. But...I have a feeling my kind (a minority race) is not welcome in those areas
Well I can promise you that wouldn't be the case on my boat. Racism is not nearly as bad down here as the perception is. I think more importantly most folks wouldn't want the liability of having someone they don't know along for the ride. They are there to work hard and an inexperienced bystander would just be in the way. But Im sure someone would be glad to take you if you looked around
How much do you need to get a crab boat, what ar eff the fee's, and where can i go to get a license, or Permits! Love Crabing! Even if I need to work on one, been crabing all my life!

it kinda pains my heart to know that you guys are only getting about $5 LB for the #1 Jumbos because im here in Tampa florida and they are charging almost quadruple of that in the store. the markup is insane.
That's the case for all seafood unfortunately.
$5 lb is a good price at the dock for #1's, it's often less

how do you keep people from stealing the crabs out of your traps?
By making it very bad for them when you catch them I would imagine
@@OutsidetheLevees I only had three traps and they were getting robbed, I eventually solved the problem by connecting float to concrete block than trap to Block. I figured out thieves are basically lazy and would be discouraged when they pulled line and found a heavy muddy block on end. This of course cannot be used commercially, but works for a few traps.
