I agree that he shouldn't be charged as his intent wasn't to kill someone but to protect himself which is a normal reaction from anyone no matter what age they are. Since he is 7 year old that witness a murder infront of him can traumatised him greatly which even adults would get traumatised too. So out of fear he use the gun to shoot as he was imitating people that use guns. He doesn't know what to do at his age witnessing a murder like that so he decides to solve it himself which he shouldn't have done in the first place. He should have told his parents about it and not solve the problem himself. I know some may argue that he is too young to know that which I can understand. So the parents must understand that they have to let their kids understand that it is ok to talk to them if they face any problems. Therefore,I think he shouldn't be charged but I think the parents need to let him feel safe and comfortable to talk to them if he face any problems in the future so things like that won't happen since he kept it to himself

The dead girl's mother understand now. She knows it was an accident. She forgive the boy. Why couldn't others understand that? All she asked was for her community to go home and hug/love their kids because they are okay. The mom gave them the message to do what she couldn't do anymore. I mean everyone grew up in a tough environment and witness violence and was scared that they would next. I thought everyone would sympathetic about it instead of using it to personalized their anger
This is so sad that the kid was trying to shoot the guy that he saw kill the Person, accidentally kills the little girl. And then he is shot. I don’t know if this is what happened in the real case, the victim was a little white female child and the boy that shot her was a little black male. I hope it was a mistake too. Like in this show.
More like a cold blooded murderer. Carly's death was an accident, and it was determined Elias was too young to fully understand the consequences of his actions. TJ, on the other hand, is old enough to know killing someone is wrong and he did it anyway. He can be angry about the ruling all he wants, but he had no right to take Elias's life. Now TJ will be another unfortunate statistic in the high incarceration rate of black males. But unlike most who get locked up for dumb stuff, TJ is one who needs to be locked up before he becomes a vigilante; killing everyone he thinks wronged himself or his community.
This is why I waited to introduce my son into any type of religion. If he asks questions, I will answer honestly, and hopefully objectively. But I want him to find his way without my influence, and I feel like most religions are actually really scary on paper. Not to mention they are far too complex for young children to really grasp. He's such a good kid and I couldn't be prouder.
I don't get how they could have charged him with murder anyway. Intent follows the bullet. He was acting in self defense thus it doesn't matter that he shot the wrong person. You could go with a manslaughter or criminally negligent homicide charge, but then you would have to base his actions on what a reasonable 7 year old would do. Hard to say he didn't meet that standard when that standard is so loose because who is to say what a reasonable 7 year old would do when in fear for their life from a guy they just witnessed murder someone.
This episode is questioning the screwed grown ups' world children are raised in. It's holding a mirror to us, the adults, that reflects the toxic society we're creating for our children. The ultimate way to stop the insanity is by "going home and taking care of our children".
The 12 year old got arrested because he shot to kill while the 7 year old shot and Carly was just caught in the cross fire as the 7 year old wanted the “bad men” to go away
Imagine thinking justice is killing a 7 year old or sentencing him to jail for an action that was born out of self defense. People with more developed brains have received less backlash.
I feel sorry for the little boy he just didn't want to get hurt by them and didn't mean to hurt her than he got killed than another child will have yo eventually learn the truth and have guilt.
We don't ask such questions in Germany. Under German criminal law anyone under the age of 14 cannot be held criminally responsible because they lack an understanding of what is right and what is wrong.

Just like some young children don't see that what they did was wrong until someone tells them that it was wrong. He understood aspects, but not all of it.
You technically cant charge a 7 year old with any crime...
Forgot to mention that CPS was threatening to take the parent’s daughter too
He still got what he deserved in the end
I wonder where this kid is now. Was such an amazing young actor 🙌🏾
Hell, probably

I can only keep repeating myself : This is such a good series !!!
"What's that?"
"Hell"
*"You think you should burn in hell for what you did?"*
NO OH GOD YOU DONT JUST SAY IT LIKE THAT TO THE KID
She asked if he thinks that he's going to burn in hell for what he did, just to make sure she understood him properly.
That poor mothers grief we have to be better lets make the violence stop!
At 7 years old,A kid who believed he was going burn in hell for what he did, well yeah at least he knew the consequences, the concept of the courts and the justice system, the role of the courts and the judges and he knew there are lawyers who could help him,he had the capacity to assist his own defense, however he took the beliefs of the consequences and the punishment to the extreme with his thoughts he would go to hell for what he did, although what he did was an accident trying to defend himself and someone from a murderer he witness,he believed what he did was wrong
Good God. They're trying to throw the book at a seven year-old.
this kid acted amazing for such young age

Me too
Saw this episode as an older kid and it disturbed me a lot. Made me sick to my stomach. And I couldn’t get the kids drawings out of my head. Now I’m 31 and It’s stuck with me the entire time, and here it is in my recommended. Crazy.
The mom seems caught in between two different emotions: one it's like I'm angry she sad but the other is like but man... He's a kid.... It's hard to even be mad, relived, I mean I think she was more so taken aback. 🤷🏽♀️ okmebetybody is mad here and I get it but he's not some wicked grown man who just decided I wanna go out and kill somebody today... Matter of fact let me make sure she's black”...they not looking at the cat that first he's a child.... I mean I get it but, I'm sirryrhey kind of upsetting me.
This made me cry 😭
The sad thing that still bothers me is this. If the DA was going to do this, yet they do not show Carly's mother being told this. It is the disrespect that bothers me. I personally feel there should be accountability for Carly's death, but what sucks is that this choice was displayed without giving the mother respect and not be blindsided. Many may feel Carly's murder was justified, I just feel like this entire episode is very one sided to paint Carly's murder as an afterthought.
Powerful episode
Young Elias in this scene was brilliant from start to finish, I felt his guilt and remorse, he did an exceptional job emoting his feelings.
I’ve got this episode on DVD the bit on the courthouse steps where Carly’s mother interrupts Alex’s press conference & says go home take care of your children always puts a lump in my throat
The kid who played Elise played the part brilliantly
Law and Order SVU season 2 had a lot of sad endings like this episode this boy is not dangerous or evil he didn't mean to kill that little girl Carly.
Therefore,I think he shouldn't be charged but I think the parents need to let him feel safe and comfortable to talk to them if he face any problems in the future so things like that won't happen since he kept it to himself
kid was shot dead by an angry protester at the end of the episode.
He didnt mean to shoot carly
whatttt ? what happened to the boy :( i cried i can’t believe this happened to him so young.
He died
He was shot by a black kid because he thought he killed the girl because she was black.
A 12 year old boy shot him dead though Elias was Latino the boy who shot him was black he thought Elias murdered Carly because of her skin colour he the 12 year old was arrested
There's a fabulous red herring at the beginning of the episode related to his drawing. When he draws himself shooting someone. The detectives leap to the wrong conclusion.
Very sad. Everyone loses in the end. 😔
This kid is an amazing little actor! I can't believe I haven't seen him in anything else.
his parents were in the wrong for this, i get that their other child was sick but who on earth would allow their child to go out so soon after being in a very public and controversial murder trial?????
No one race should matter we all matter our voices and opioins and livelyhoods out families our beliefs our way of it thats what matters most
So painful for both families 💔💔

Whoooa great little actor this kid is
how does the lil boy draw a better nose than me
Big mood
I don’t like that that Karly’s mom is portrayed as a single and unsupported mother. She didn’t even have relatives in the courtroom. Very unrealistic.
black moms are overwhelmingly single moms
The dead girl's mother understand now. She knows it was an accident. She forgive the boy. Why couldn't others understand that? All she asked was for her community to go home and hug/love their kids because they are okay. The mom gave them the message to do what she couldn't do anymore. I mean everyone grew up in a tough environment and witness violence and was scared that they would next. I thought everyone would sympathetic about it instead of using it to personalized their anger
It's quite a tricky decision for young children to be sentenced to juvie or any other jail that's commonly reserved for bad young people everywhere.
This boy can act better than Amber Heard.
Dr Olivet looks like a younger Kate Mulgrew.
The poor kid….
Whats on the inside not outside why cant let this be a lesson to us all
Thomas James is a America hero
👍👍👍
More like a cold blooded murderer. Carly's death was an accident, and it was determined Elias was too young to fully understand the consequences of his actions. TJ, on the other hand, is old enough to know killing someone is wrong and he did it anyway. He can be angry about the ruling all he wants, but he had no right to take Elias's life. Now TJ will be another unfortunate statistic in the high incarceration rate of black males. But unlike most who get locked up for dumb stuff, TJ is one who needs to be locked up before he becomes a vigilante; killing everyone he thinks wronged himself or his community.
Thomas james is a fictional character

True justice just be fair but also be tempered by compassion.
Part of me wonders what a scene between the mother of the girl and the boy would have been like.
This was deep
I don't get how they could have charged him with murder anyway. Intent follows the bullet. He was acting in self defense thus it doesn't matter that he shot the wrong person. You could go with a manslaughter or criminally negligent homicide charge, but then you would have to base his actions on what a reasonable 7 year old would do. Hard to say he didn't meet that standard when that standard is so loose because who is to say what a reasonable 7 year old would do when in fear for their life from a guy they just witnessed murder someone.
This kid will be traumatized for life
This episode is questioning the screwed grown ups' world children are raised in. It's holding a mirror to us, the adults, that reflects the toxic society we're creating for our children. The ultimate way to stop the insanity is by "going home and taking care of our children".
If you think about it the kid already predicted his death.
You don't lock him up. He's in second grade. He still believes in the Easter Bunny.
I knew I recognised the therapist - it's Minuet from Star Trek
The 12 year old got arrested because he shot to kill while the 7 year old shot and Carly was just caught in the cross fire as the 7 year old wanted the “bad men” to go away
Imagine thinking justice is killing a 7 year old or sentencing him to jail for an action that was born out of self defense. People with more developed brains have received less backlash.
Poor boy. Poor, poor boy. 😢
What season and episode is this from?

The fact that Carly’s mom forgave him.
We don't ask such questions in Germany. Under German criminal law anyone under the age of 14 cannot be held criminally responsible because they lack an understanding of what is right and what is wrong.
The mom is played by Sara Ramirez, right? Dr. Torres from Greys

I do believe in that kid or for any kid becomes poor but it is okay feel that way bit at least he tried cause he didn’t mean to do that with Carla but I was so proud of him to stands up for his actions just to warn someone else that who did it but I do understand what the kid feels about being in the barriers or being in hell that doesn’t matter cause it doesn’t matter being poor but it is okay to feel that way or to act that way or but under my offense so to let him go if he doesn’t do it again
