My husband and I took the Durango-Silverton train on our 5th wedding anniversary on a warm summer’s day in July 1989. Colorado’s beauty, coupled by the sound of the steam engine powering through the canyon is even more spectacular in winter as this video readily attests.
Thankyou James, for that wonderful Christmas gift!!! I'm a 66 year old boy from Oz (Australia) who loves getting a trainset for Christmas. I've only ridden that train once in summer,20 yrs ago, but boy, what a ride it is.I treasure that memory.Winter sure is magic!
To think that there were thousands of those trains across America working everyday. Blocking intersections and belching smoke and coal dust. They were part of life and only now do we notice the incredible beauty and awe inspiring power they had. So few remain
I've ridden the Durango and Silverton as well a good 20 + steam lines this one is the best. I don't beleave there is a bad steam line but the D&S is my personal favorite lots of rail action and mining history. Silverton is a historic mining town in the old west. I live in Southern Michigan cattle country but I do have the Little River railroad Pere Marquette 1225 and the huckleberry railroad narrow gauge all are very cool to check out and ride.
I can't believe that is the same train in the late sixties we were on during a western vacation ... my father love this more than anything! I will get those pictures out to reminisce we took such wonderful pictures on that beautiful trip through Durango and the mountains he would have loved this video! Thank you so much
My Irish immigrant grandfather was an engineer and fireman on the D RG 4 close to 40 years. Watching these videos makes me realize why he loved his job so much. At the age a 70 they retired him. He bought a home in Alamosa after having a home in Chama. I have ridden the cumbres and Toltec Railway along with the Durango and Silverton railroad. Very fortunate to have the opportunity to experience what my grandfather experienced everyday.
This reminds me of my Grandfather’s house at 467 Linwood Avenue in Buffalo NY the top floor he dedicated to his original West German Train Set. This room as I remember as a very very little girl as the stairs were creaking and cracking as you take each step and when I opened the door to this room as my Dearest GrandMother escorted me. All of the entire town right down to every aspect of detail I was in AWE and to this day it was the most wonderful excellent magical room and I vowed to pay very very close attention to every possible minute detail. God bless you always dearest GrandFather Dr. Leon H.Smith. RIP AHMEN
*Sigh*....oh, so beautiful. This is a most magnificent and oh, so beautiful train, and video footage made. Wow! Love the smoke coming out. So glad many cool people are out there.
Magical I love these steamtrains! My father loved them all his life and this one in particular touched my soul for my father has passed away several years now but I have been sick lately and when I opened my yourube this was there and I cried💕🚂because it's as though he's letting me know he's watching over me❤❤ So everytime I think of my father and a train or steamtrain shows up, I know in my heart it is Dad🚂❤💚❤🚂💚 Thank you for the beautiful video Blessings 💗💗
Jeanne Valeur. I got the love of all forms of steam power from my farther too, and I can remember steam running most trains on the railway close to where we lived. All those traction engine rally’s we were ‘dragged’ to in the 1960s as a family, but we thoroughly enjoyed them when we were there!
It never ceases to amaze me how those two narrow slivers of steel can hold thousands of pounds of train on the straight and narrow path (at least one HOPES they can)! Talk about faith, there is a good example.
I envy the Engine driver he must have been feeling nice warm and cozy during this part of the year. In his canin . Awesome shots . Thanks for uploading.
I used to live south of there in Albuquerque. Never knew that RR was even there. Now I'm in the midwest. But I WILL go back and ride that train when I retire. Merry Christmas!
2016 my son Cody and I made this a part of our 5700 mile road trip. Definitely one of the highlights. The trip up to Silverton is a uphill pull with the engine working hard, so expect coal smoke and lots of it. It is worth it though, when you arrive in the gem of Silverton, with so much to wander and see. Have lunch and relax into another world, cares slip away for a brief. We chose a parlor car, if I remember correctly, with a host and our own table, refreshments and souvenirs included in the price. Bucket list item joyfully checked off. Recommend this to anyone wanting to make a special memory.
Parents had a summer home in Creede, CO. Have ridden this train a few times with kids and grand kids. Very scenic trip along the Animas River. Silverton is a fun town with some great hole in the wall restaurants. All well worth with the price.
This reminds me of when I rode with the crew at the Texas State Railroad many times; many wonderful memories were made while in the cab and was very educational too.
Beautiful run! I loved it! and i loved the train and the "CASCADE RUN" (looks like where part of the video was taken) UP the mountain after we left Durango train station ( i believe it was Sept 11 2021) it is a GREAT run up the mountain! and then back down the mountain. Once you get up the mountain it is absolutely beautiful up there. Makes you want to camp or live up there. bring your camera and video. Very memorable! FUN! LOTS OF FUN. i would diffinitely do it again and again; LOVE THE SOUND OF THE STEAM ENGINE TRAIN! AWESOME! AND THE HORN! it is unmatched by any horns
Gorgeous video. I was on the D&S in an October in the late 90s. Spent most of my time on the observation platform of the last car. It did get cold out there!
Absolutely the best video I have ever seen on youtube, that is better quality than movie or TV production. AND it has a steam train to boot. Great work.
Derek Thompson someone’s pretty bitter, I doubt that one of the last of a handful of trains is a factor at all. Especially when most of that smoke is just water vapor
What stunning mountain landscapes, makes me want to get out the charcoal and graphite for a drawing session. The hard clean engine outline and the plume of smoke among all those feathery trees and sheared off rock cuts. Perfect beauty.
Loved hearing it talk; "think i can , think i can, think i can" and whoosh get rid of the watered steam , and i did it ! At seventy six years of age some things you never forget! and the steam locomotives did talk. diesels they just hum.
Awesome,just awesome,what a perspective,from the outside!the whistle,the heavy engine breathing. I’m sharing this video with my friends in Europe,they got trains,but not like this….
As a little boy I'd always craft christmas tree layouts with my Lionel's. I'd take those cheap dollar store snow sheets and put little wooden blocks underneath of the snow to make hills and valleys. I'd always envisioned a snowy landscape in my head, but back in that day there was no real access to videos like this, perhaps pictures. Seeing this sends me reeling. I feel like I am in the 90's setting up that tree all over again. Anyway, brilliant footage. Hard to take in how gorgeous our world is sometimes.
It's beautiful around Durango. My Aunts ex is from Alamosa. When little my mom and I rode Santa Fe train from Kansas City to Wellington, ks. Sound like Popcorn popcorn lol
I remember hearing that sound the engine makes starting at 4:20. 1st time I ever heard it was while I was picking almonds with a friend of my sister's in 1956. The almond farm was about 100 kilometers outside Barcelona next to a mountain. The steam engine was traveling up the steep grade pulling umtyump wagons.
Wow what a stunning video! Perfect picture postcard images of a lovely railway. Perfect sound as well. Thank you so much for sharing that. Going to play it through my hi fi later. David.
What a beautiful winter wonderland scenic railway! What else can you say but just be captivated by it all. Also 12 on the hook is a big ask, even for this tough little loco, but she handles it so well, brilliant footage, so thanks from Ken in Scotland, UK and best wishes for Christmas! K
Beautiful video!!! I enjoyed the ride on this old steamer so much. It was October when I rode it and the mountains were like the sun with the aspens turning. I hope to get to ride it with snow like it has here💗. Love the clickety clacking of the old cars💗💗💗. Rocking back and forth😊🥰😴😴😴

That engine is saying, "I THINK I CAN, I THINK I CAN". You can hear it so clearly. Nice video. Beautiful scenery.

How well I remember the San Juan Mountains as we headed toward Silverton ... RIP Hank..
Can't even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this video, simply grand ! Thanks for posting.
Fantastic, I would just love to travel on that train with all those gorgeous winter views, just beautiful 🇬🇧👍
najlepsze wideo trakcji parowej jakiego od dawna już nie oglądałem. Brawo !
That is so awesome! What a powerful little engine, and after seeing this will have to come an visit one day!
Absolutely beautiful. I love that steam locomotive horn. I love trains. That is a lonesome whistle that just soothes my soul. Thank guys.

Without any doubt, the most beautiful video of steam railroading I have ever seen!
I must ride this train someday!
What an awesome video! Thanks you! Maybe someday I can ride this train!
Beautiful scenes of a moving long train which powered by a steam engine in a highland. Many thanks to the film making team so much
Excellent !! Love the giant plumes. Seems like quite a big consist for that little engine, but he knew he could.
Really great locations.
I rode this train back in 1978, I was young, such a thrill. What great memories I will always have of that day.
Rode it this past summer but winter scenes have such unique beauty
I envy the Engine driver he must have been feeling nice warm and cozy during this part of the year. In his canin . Awesome shots . Thanks for uploading.
Those gates should go down alot sooner for safety! But these old trains are such beauties!!
I noticed that too.
Yaelra R. my thought
Too much smoke
I think it just looks closer due to the way it was being filmed with a telephoto lens.

Great video. I've been on this train from Durango to Silverton and it is a trip to remember. I live in Colorado and love it here.
We rode on the train in September and it was worth the trip.

Great movie and stunning scenes in snow ! Greetings from France.
