      Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride, Switzerland has got the balance between public transport and driving a car about right, there is no need to drive in Swiss cities because the public transport is so good and affordable.

    Wow, massive tour of Bern! The tram system is really extensive, more so than I thought; I was there last year and only saw a small part of it. Nice to see so much of the system and virtually the entire city. Thanks for this "documentary" of the tram system & the city. The steam tram is really nice to see!

      Hi Peter, this is part 1 of 3 showing a drivers eye view. These should be followed by another video taking a closer look at the steam and electric trams we traveled on. Hopefully I should post them in the next 2 or 3 weeks.

      Hi Andrei, the old town is a beautiful, this video shows how much trams have grown over the years, they are almost trains now. The one we were travelling on would fit nicely in the garden as a summer house, but I'd never get one of the new ones in my garden, they are not likely to finish their days as garden sheds.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crossing the tracks in a busy street shared with trams is a bit scary, especially for someone like myself who is not used to trams running through city streets. The old tram shed is not used for storing trams anymore, both the yard and sheds contain an interesting collection of artwork.

    • @WhiteTiger333
      @WhiteTiger333 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can imagine. Sort of like my almost getting myself run down in England because I was not used to watching for traffic in the opposite lanes. From reading the comments, I understand now why the music added to your videos. Yes, no separation from your camera's audio and the passengers. The music is sort of jaunty, actually. Now I'm starting the part 2 video and greatly looking forward to these next two parts of the journey.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a similar experience in France after catching a Eurostar train from London to Paris, I forgot I was in another country where cars drive on the opposite side of the road. Conversations picked up by the camera are always a problem, I would not like a personal conversation broadcast to world, so I assume other people feel the same way. There is also the added complication of not being able to make a judgement because I don't understand the language. I'm glad you liked the video and hope you find the next installment enjoyable to watch.

  • @melkiorwiseman5234
    @melkiorwiseman5234 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I popped back to your channel to re-watch this and besides enjoying the virtual journey, I was struck by two thoughts. One was how interesting it is that the Swiss are using patterns of lights as their tram traffic signals while Australia is still using the standard colours but masked to the letter T for tram. The other thought was how little language skill you need in order to translate some things, as I spotted "Cine Rex" in the video and almost automatically translated it to "King Cinema" :)

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hadn't given much thought to the lights, until I studied the video after reading your comment. The Swiss system also allows the pattern of lights to act a route indicator. Whilst the Australian system is simple, using standard components, it can be confusing at junctions where there might be traffic lights with "arrows" imposed on them for road vehicles and "T" for trams. I prefer the use of white lights for trams, because the distinction is immediately obvious. I find it strange to see so many signs in English throughout the world, I guess some words are universally recognized, someone else commented that "Stop" signs at road junctions in Europe use the word "Stop" not the country language. In Shanghai, there were almost as many signs in English as in Chinese. The French and English languages share a lot of common words and expressions such as cafe, com ci com sa, c'est la vie, Aqua and Voyage. As someone who speaks English, I am grateful that it is a kind of universal language recognized around the world.

    • @melkiorwiseman5234
      @melkiorwiseman5234 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Timsvideochannel1 I believe that if the world lasts long enough, English will one day be a truly world-wide language which everyone can speak, although I also believe it will be unrecognisable to us by then, just as Old English is now almost unrecognisable as English to us today.
      Others have told me that "stop" in Russian is actually a fairly long phrase, so they use the phonetic spelling of the English "stop" on their stop signs (it looks like "cton" to us, but the letters phonetically form the sound of "stop").
      Australian tram traffic lights generally have white instead of green, to distinguish them from other traffic lights. There is either a white T for "any/default direction" or a white arrow for the permitted direction. They are also generally noticably smaller than other traffic lights, which makes sense because they're usually mounted close next to where the driver's cabin would be situated.
      But the Swiss system is certainly more compact.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@melkiorwiseman5234 I agree that it is likely that the world will one day have a universal language base around today's English, incorporating new words from around the globe, I also think spellings will be simplified as already happens in the USA. I have re-watched the last video I shot from a Melbourne tram confirming your description of Australian tram traffic lights. Take care. Tim.

    What a nice city. I would like to visit it. This type of music works great with these videos. Maybe classical music will work also for the cities with great architecture.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an interesting, fascinating city, full of beautiful historic buildings. Music is always a difficult choice, especially when people really want to hear the original soundtrack. Some of the original soundtrack cannot be broadcast because it might cause embarrassment or offence, hence the music. I'm glad you like the music, I'm not quite sure where I stand copyright wise when it comes to classical music, even though most of it is not covered by copyright, orchestras still claim as their original piece. I buy copyright free music which limits my choice, but I get less problems from people claiming my videos, although it still happens on a regular basis, as long as I can prove I have purchased the right to use the music, I can appeal and so far I have appealed more than 300 claims successfully. As you can probably guess I would avoid music if I could, but that would result in long silences in my videos. It's always nice to receive positive feedback when it comes to music, because an awful lot of people get quite upset that I have not used the original soundtrack.

    What does the graffiti demarcate everything is neat and tidy then it starts at 12:18, the tram reverses at 18:00 and
    all graffiti stops at 27:30? I saw that glimpse of a steam tram that was neat.

    • @Timsvideochannel1

      Graffiti is rare in Switzerland, but I believe it is allowed in some areas provided the artists abide by certain rules. If someone reading this knows the answer, please share it with us. That steam tram is very popular, with tour groups who can hire it for a trip around the extensive Bern tram system.

      Yes, and this is what I want to hear in your next tram video - a house track playing, something like "The Whistle Song" by Frankie Knuckles, "We Found Love" by Calvin Harris feat. Rihanna, or "Can You Feel It" by Mr. Fingers (I'm from Chicago and we have a lot of classic house music here, so those are just ideas).

      Hi Dana, I tried Google Earth to see if I could include some information, but I was going to leave myself wide open to mistakes, so opted for minimum information. At times our tram catches up with service trams showing the route number they are operating, most of this video covers route 9. Here is a link to a map showing the routes and numbers .... upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/df/Liniennetz_des_Trams_Bern.svg
      With the aid of this map and Google Earth it should be possible to follow our progress, until we cover track not used by service trams that is. I wish our tour company had given us a map of the route ..... Tim.

    Now i know how a switch on tram lane works

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some switch automatically when they receive a signal from the tram, others can be changed manually.
      Copied from this article - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railroad_switch
      The switch points of tram lines are often operated remotely by the driver.
      The traditional solution for control is whether the car draws power or not when passing under a special short segment of the overhead wire. The presence or absence of power draw is detected by special circuitry, which activates or deactivates the switch points. This arrangement requires the tram car to coast unpowered through the switch (running on momentum) when making certain moves.
      The next system uses a powerful electromagnet in the tram and a reed relay inlaid between the tracks to initiate the blade turning mechanism. The driver has a separate switch to control the magnet, thus switching is no longer dependent on power draw of the tram simplifying the procedure somewhat. Turning the switchblades always requires a magnetic field on the relay and its polarity dictates the direction. No magnetic field when passing the relay means retain the blades in whatever the position they were.
      Alternatively, more recently, radio telemetry or some other form of control signaling is used.

    Found the music almost okay for once (although the lead guitarist is a machine) but the natural sounds would always be better. The point made about people's conversations I don't share. They're talking in a public space. I think you can't therefore embarrass them - they can only embarrass themselves.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would love to use the natural sounds, it would make editing videos cheaper and simpler. People forget the camera is there, is the cab of a tram really a public space? We all say daft things that could cause embarrassment, most of the people talking are also friends, I would like to stay friendly with them. Causing embarrassment would not be a good move on my part, not only would I loose friends, the next time I ask to place a camera in the cab the answer is likely to be be "No".

    • @Hallands.
      @Hallands. 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Timsvideochannel1 Oh, then you're probably right. I was only thinking about the general rules of the law about recording in public. In most countries, it is only required that accidental actors not be visually or otherwise identifiable (license plates, house number aso). But this sounds more like a semi-private get together of train-enthusiasts, so different rules may apply.
      On the other hand: We viewers haven't a clue who they are, and whatever might have been said was probably heard by everyone present already, since the camera could pick it up, so what's the possible harm, really?Might it just be that you're exceptionally sensitive and cautious? Anyway, none of my business, and thanks for the fine video!

A part ce détail cocasse, on peut se demander à quoi ils servent leurs trams, parce que la ville est d'une tristesse à mourir : pas de piétons dans les rues ou les boulevards...sortis du centre ville. La plupart des tramways étaient occupés, parce que les gens les utilisaient plutôt que de marcher ou d’utiliser leur voiture. Berne n’était pas surpeuplée, il y avait assez de monde pour donner une bonne ambiance et loin du centre-ville, les banlieues tranquilles ressemblaient à la plupart des villes européennes.
