Driver's Eye View - Prague Tram Tour with a very special Tatra T3 Coupé tram

  • A tram with a “Wow” factor normally reserved for iconic sports cars is hard to imagine, but the Tatra T3 Coupé does just that. In a city where trams both modern and traditional are a common sight, the T3 Coupé stands out as people stop, to wave, take a photo or just watch it pass by. The T3 tram has been an integral part of the Prague cityscape for over half a century, Prague Public Transit Co in conjunction with the studio Anna Marešová designers worked to create a sightseeing tram that celebrated the T3 in Prague, resulting in the creation of the T3 Coupé, combining the very best of sixties design with a contemporary, stylish all white interior.
    Prague's first horse drawn tram line was opened in 1875, and the first electric tram ran in 1891. Today’s network consists of 142.4 km of track served by a sizable fleet of 968 trams.
    This video starts at Náměstí Republiky with trip to Sídliště Barrandov over the extension opened in 2003 between Hlubočepy-Sídliště Barrandov followed by a run through the city to Královka and finally on to Pohořelec close to Prague Castle.

    Riding the trams was the most enjoyable memory of my 2 weeks in the Czech Republic last year. Interesting to note, I heard more English in the background of this video than what I encountered in my stay. I hit the tourist areas around 0700 or 0800 and went further out after 0900, so most of the Czech people that I encountered had to endure my “dobry den,” “prosim,” “dekuji” and pointing, ending with an attempt at “Na shledanou.” I had a great time, but “prominte” to those who had to endure my attempts.

      Hi Bill, the Czech people will have appreciated you trying to use their language. I was travelling with a group of mainly English tourists, hence the English in the background. When I went into the city alone, English was not the predominant language, most of the other tourists were from Asia, considering the time of year I was surprised at how many tourists there were. I didn't get much past "Dobry Den" and "Dekuji" fortunately our hosts were often bi-lingual and most of the younger people spoke reasonable English. I had intended to return to the Czech republic in June on another tour, although the tour is still advertised, I'll be surprised if it goes ahead, maybe I should use my time in lock-down to practice a few more Czech phrases. Take care. Tim.

      Those "to do" lists just keep growing, the world is full of wonderful places to see and things to do. Every time I cross something off, I find 2 more things to add. An all day public transport ticket in Prague is as cheap as chips you'll be able to cross the metro, funicular railway, busses and trams off with just the one ticket.

      Riding the New York City subway and saying to myself, I am a New Yorker, just like the New Yorker song. But not any more, those days are gone for me. I hope to move to Florida now. To live a healthier life there. I hope to visit Prague one day again. Last time I was in Prague was in 2008. I have enjoyed watching this tram video again. So many memories I have of places in this video.

      Cheers, I'm pleased you enjoyed it, Prague has an extensive tram system. I visited Denver, the light rail/tram system there was impressive. I live in the UK, a country that sacrificed all but one tram system for buses; in light of today's traffic chaos that was a poor decision, some cities have new tram systems, but they come at a crippling cost. Most European cities kept their trams, How I wish UK policy makers at the time had taken decisions based on providing a service rather than making false short term savings.

      Great reply.
      It is no secret here in the USA, that money talks all else walks. We had great trolleys systems (these were precursors to the trams) but abandoned them in the late 1930s and 40s because of intense lobbying by the oil and automobile interests. These capitalists did so in order to compel people to buy their cars and their gasoline. As a consequence, the air became more polluted, others died from cancer, and the streets became horribly congested. Thankfully, there has now been a resurgence in having more public transportation. It is now called "light rail" which to me is not quite as efficient as were trolleys and trackless trolleys. But they certainly do improve transportation efficiency and safety in the urban areas.

This link takes you to a city that has been to hell and back, yet somehow its old trams survive to do the job they very built to do over 60 years earlier - th-cam.com/video/APLAvPDs8Rw/w-d-xo.html

      Yes, some people stupidly believe public transportation as "Marxist" and similar ideologies. This because of their ignorance and stupidity. All these delusionals need do is to read the letters of that 'Marxist' George Washington who wrote about the need to promote public works in his letters (1786). They may also read Marxist Hamilton's *Report On Manufactures* of 1791. One of the first major public works projects which involved public transportation was that of Marxist Governor DeWitt Clinton of 1817. The great irony of all this is the fact that all these "Marxists" did these things well before Marx was born.
      Right wingers are well known for their ignorance and stupidity. This behooves the more patriotic members of society to inform these ignoramuses so that we may have social reform and ultimately a more productive society.

No damage where I live but Salt Lake City had some. Back to videos, I found one today which took an hour ride on a narrow gauge interurban through the Vitter Valley in Austria to the town of Mayerhof. Beautiful sunny day. @@LeeWitten Hi, I just took a look at some of the videos you've posted to TH-cam, there is some really interesting stuff there. My parents took a camper van all over the former Eastern bloc countries just after the wall came down, one of their main comments was the lack of colour, that's certainly not the case now. I wasn't aware of the quake in Utah, coronavirus is the only thing on the News these days, I had hoped Brexit would be over and done with so that we can get on with ordinary life again with our politicians bitching about stuff that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, sadly corona-virus had put normal life on hold for the time being. I hope the damage caused by the Utah quake was minimal with no loss of life.
      Austria is home to a variety of fascinating railways such as the one you mentioned. This tour continued into Austria with some more one off trips along unusual freight and other little used lines, both standard and narrow gauge, I look forward to uploading videos about them in the coming months as time permits. Right now I'm editing another Harris super 8 video shot in 1975 on the Rio Grande Route through central Utah. Both desert and mountainous country. I can echo your parent's comment about lack of color in the Eastern Block. Before arriving in Prague we travelled from Hamburg to Berlin then to Munich and Prague. As we crossed the boarder from western to eastern Germany, it was startling how the entire nature and "color" of the country became. Also our power out of Berlin through East Germany was steam engines. For a rail fan, that was kind of neat. Unfortunately I didn't record much of it. I was shooting super 8 and being very conservative on amount of film. I was concentrating on scenery more than trains at the time. Boy what I could have done if digital was round then.

Of course those 20 years were spent under the Communist (Soviet) rule but I thought I should bring out one fact of life which is that no matter how splendid those ancient (overly painted) buildings appear nothing makes up for the joys of living in a the suburbs of a free country. European cities are fascinating, many suffered badly as a result of two world wars, but instead of demolishing the old buildings and replacing them with modern ones, they rebuilt them as they had been before they were damaged, the result is pleasing to the eye. Cities in the UK such as Portsmouth and Plymouth were rebuild with square, low quality buildings that quickly aged looking even more ugly than when they were built. Many went on to become an embarrassment to those cities, most have now been demolished after a relatively short life, to be replaced with more ugly buildings often built in the same materials as factories, some planners never learn. Old photos of these towns show some of the beautiful buildings that were lost to war damage, British towns would look so much more attractive if they'd done as many European towns did, in rebuilding, instead of replacing old buildings with modern, ugly square monstrosities. From your comment, NSW government is repeating the mistakes made in Britain. A good halfway measure, now quite common even in Britain is to retain the facades of the old buildings whilst constructing a completely new building behind, the best of both worlds.Take care. Tim.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, this was taken with a GoPro Hero 7 Black Edition and the tram windows were tinted. GoPro's are great for their size but the colours can be a little out in bright sunshine, sometimes I correct the colour with my video editing software, but on this occasion I left it as it was because it wasn't too far off, it was a bright winters day.

    • @robertvanhoek9470
      @robertvanhoek9470 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, actually I had considered that possibility. I just wasn’t sure. Placing the GoPro on the outside is so much better, as Mars Hartdegen does on VNR locomotives in Vietnam. I realize of course, there are possible hazards involved, not to mention getting permission. But it is so much more rewarding experiencing ambient sound, rather than the repetitive routine inside the cab. I thank you for your prompt, informative reply, good luck!

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertvanhoek9470 Hi, I do try to get a camera on the outside where ever possible. Mars does a great job, made a little easier by the low speed of the trains in Vietnam, a Gopro on the outside works up to about 45 mph after that things go downhill, this is a video taken using either a GoPro 6 or 7 that demonstrates the problems of mounting a camera on the outside - th-cam.com/video/dT12qqDQAqA/w-d-xo.html&feature=emb_logo I am not a train driver and getting a camera in the cab is an opertunist thing, I have to be as quick as possible, causing the minimum of disruption, some videos are more successful than others, although I am always grateful to the drivers who allow a camera either in or on their trains. These days there are a number of train drivers who have more time to set things up posting some really excellent videos such as those posted by HinduCowGirl.
