I am saddened by the regression I have seen in Kanzi's potential. The new team does not have the same goals in mind and it is truly a shame that Kanzi's true development will never be realized. The researcher said NO. Kanzi said if the researcher didn't bite the man yelling at sue, Kanzi would bite him. the researcher just dismissed it as an empty threat. 5 minutes before the end of the day, Sue went to collect Kanzi, Kanzi ran past sue and into the researchers office and Bite him like he said he would. True Story.

The researchers aren't trying to learn bonobo language, they're trying to get the kanzi to understand english. Because we're the more advanced species, it's easier to establish a brigde with english. When the brigde is more or less established it'll be infinitely easier to understand bonobo.

Kanzi is great because the Koko critics have to take it on the chin and face because lexigrams aren't open to interpretation the way Patterson interpreted Koko's signs. Some of those criticisms are very legitimate, don't get me wrong, but in the case of Kanzi and his lexigrams, there is no gray room. He knows the words and symbols, and that isn't deniable. There's still a possibility for reading into his communications too much, but there is ZERO doubt that he has a meaning for all of the words the researchers claim he does.
Please don't judge her - she has put so much effort and sacrifice into caring for and teaching bonobos, which will hopefully help protect all apes in the future, as well as other creatures.

I've been watching Kanzi's videos and im thinking, am i looking at a new generation of Apes who will be living along with humans and start developing their gens faster and learning how to communicate with us and each other with more words/signs over time, like such ape might be able to learn his child these words faster than us using their own language. We should not forget the technology that would read the brains electrical signs which would allow understanding what an ape is really thinking, its hard for them to express and explain so maybe such a tech will show that apes do really think and try to speak like us but something is preventing them.

Our existence in civilization is much less challenging and does not call for learning all language, just our particular subset of language, English. So we generally stop learning language after a few years. This may seem amazing, but English is a subset of language. Hence, all you have to do is look at the most basic building blocks, sounds. First, learn what each animal sound means. Since we are animals and we make sounds, we have already in place a way to understand animal sounds. Letters! Take the rrrrr sound made by growling. That is the letter, "R." Once we are able to spell the sounds animals make, we can translate them into letters. Then all we have to do is look up what each letter means in our own language and think about it. R means think. The growl means you'd better think about your approach. The letter R comes to us from ancient forms of writing. It was once a picture of a head. We only know a little bit about our own language. Now we know a little bit more.
