And I don't blame him! In his mind, everything the humans are doing is pointless and strange, and his main motive is to obtain their unique delicacies. Forget about waiting for the hairless weirdos burning the flesh on the red death, when there's fresh food surrounding them all?
From about 10:30 - 13:30+ You can certainly tell that Kanzi would rather be watching someone else cook his dinner for him while he snacks and plays with his ball. He’s is so above this. 😂❤️😁
It's horrible how they ended up taking Kanzi from Dr.Sue. They basically kicked her out and wouldn't let her see him again. I wonder what happened for them to take such extreme measures to separate the two who obviously cared about each other.
The accusations covered a lot of mistreatment occurrences, although all of them seem like a result of mistakes and poor judgment. I don't think anything was done as punishments, and personally I don't know what the best course of action for the incestuous behavior would have been.
I wonder whatever happened to the lexigram keyboard these bonobos used. Ive seen a couple of them in various documentaries from early 90s, leading me to assume they were built from the late 80s-early 90s. It looks like the company "OKI" made the portable ones (Pause at 5:10 ) but they don't seem to mention it in their website or on Wikipedia. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oki_Electric_Industry They also appear to use other non-portable Lexigram boards by the name of "All-Talk-#" (the # indicates which one was being used as there were many made.) A company called Lingraphica also has an aac system called All Talk, so I'm guessing they've made custom lexigram boards for these bonobos as well.
I suppose it was made so they could test the Bonobos' ability for abstract thought. Had they been unable to learn the symbols, the researchers would probably switch to pictograms. Besides, how would one make a symbol for "good", "bad" or "fake"?
Because they were testing their ability to use symbols for communication, similar to language. If it resembled the object you assume they’re making the connection because of the item. They didn’t want that.
Diana Haas yeah I know that’s my point. . That’s why they used them and didn’t use pictures of apples to represent apples or pictures of trees to represent trees
Kanzi is so depressed now. The research center got rid of dr Sue. So all they do is sit outside with their heads down they don’t even communicate He misses her so much. Dr. Sue has tried everything to get bk to them. It’s really sad
Yeah I just commented that myself..I wonder what happened for them to split them up like that...I think I heard they got new management but I'm not sure. Do you know what happened to make them fire her in such A way?
I wonder if anyone has ever attempted to teach any of the ape species to write? It would seem the have the same abilities as humans to 'move a pen' and create symbols. The question would be if they could be taught to associate symbols with letters of the alphabet and be able to understand their grouping as words, and word groups as sentences and so on? It appears that they are doing something similar to what I am suggesting here. Comparing learning ability paralleled with human infants of the same age could give us some answers on this topic.
I kinda doubt they have that dexterity. If you notice how kanzi touches the padto talk his hands are limp wristed...I think it would be alot easier to teach them art that way it's not too frustrating for them bc writing requires very small precise finger movements and although I think they maybe could I really don't think they have the patience to master writing and spelling for that matter bc they have to know the whole alphabet to spell correctly and all of the rules we have on spelling like i before e and sometimes y crap lol.
I know that many great apes like to paint, there was one that would name his paintings and they somewhat resembled what he named them, he'd also get very mad if his painting was taken away when he wasn't done.
Bonobos are surprisingly gentle and are very altruistic. They’re kind to strangers, and are not aggressive like Chimpanzees. They also have a matriarchal society, like humans. People say we don’t but we do, because in the wild bonobo females choose who to mate with and who to have sex with because they don’t fight and beat each other but have sex to soothe tensions and to make up. Remember that in order for society to advance and continue to exist, females decide that. In human society why do men chase fame, money and power? All so they look like a good provider in hopes that their genes carry on. People mistake what’s happening around them without knowing why.
Kanzi is like a kid. Just wants everything right away because doesn't really understand the concept that something is better in this case cooked then raw or maybe he just prefers the raw meat. xD
they did experiments with chimps that showed not only would they wait for their food to be cooked because they liked it better, but if they knew they'd be able to cook later on in the day, they would put away their food and not eat it
Yerkes has it's limitations in communication. I'm sure the bonobos could learn English by sight reading and typing. The camping trips should have been more frequent to get kanzi out of the institutional setting
We should not be studying any animal in the lab, only in their natural environment, especially such intelligent and sentient beings like great apes. This research is trying to prove that culture is responsible for language acquisition, but thats clearly not the case. Biology has a lot to do with it as well. These animals' intelligence is best studied in the wild
They have some sort of God complex , Bonobo's will never be Human thank god. Kanzi is one cool mother fucker just let him be , fuck i hope mother nature sorts us out real soon.
If this was true, the world we be a much better place. Unfortunately, I disagree. We can only wish we were more like Bonobos. WE are much more violent and dark, just like the Chimpanzee.
Matata is like me : Not feeling like learning anything else now that I am older. Learning is most a children growing thing. So no wonder Matata's son picked everything up from what the lady tried to teach his mother. It is so simple, how they didn't catch that ?!
She's part of the Great Ape Project and has been fighting alongside some other scientists and philosophers for great apes to have more rights and freedom. Her work was used in court to curtail biomedical research on apes but it wasn't enough to also convince judges to grant legal personhood to apes. The latter is being pursued because otherwise governments don't see the need to protect the rights of non-human primates.
I have a question. How come some people considered Bonobos the fourth great ape when they are basically just another type of Chimpanzee? There are also different types of Gorillas and Orangutans, but they aren't divided into completely different ape species like how Common Chimpanzees and Bononos are. Here's the two species that fall under the "Pan" genus category: Common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) Bonobos (Pan paniscus) Here's the two species that fall under the "Gorilla" genus category: Western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) Eastern gorillas (Gorillia beringei) Here's the three species that fall under the "Pongo" genus category: Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii) Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) Tapanuli orangutans (Pongo tapanuliensis) So I think it's pretty stupid when Bonobos get treated as the fourth great ape since they are Chimps.
I get what you're saying, but I think there are some good reasons for it. First of all, Bonobos split from Chimps I believe 1.5 million years ago if I remember correctly. That's a pretty long time of being distinct species. I don't know how that compares to the other species of other apes you listed, though. If its not because of that reason though, it most certainly would be due to physical and behavioral differences. Bonobos are physically quite distinct from chimpanzees, and are thought to much closer resemble the common ancestor of us and them than chimpanzees do. There are also serious behavioral and cultural differences between bonobos and chimps. Bonobos are matriarchal and not very aggressive, with conflicts solved through wild recreational sex. Chimps are patriarchal and aggression prone, with conflicts solved through violence with the alpha male keeping peace through brute force and bravado. In short, the physical and behavioral differences are large enough to warrant using a different common name, rather than simply calling bonobos chimpanzees. For the other apes, the physical and behavioral differences are quite small between different species of orang or different species of gorilla. This said, I do not think they should be called the "fourth" great ape. I think they should be acknowledged alongside chimps as they are equally our closest ancestor, genetically speaking, and in many ways are more like us than chimpanzees even are.
The collar around Zanzis neck looks too tight. I still don’t like captive wild animals. If scientists want to know about wild animals they need to go into the wild. Not bore the animals to tears with their inane requests in a science lab.

She got sick of that herself since she saw that the bonobos became bored and frustrated with it.
