    Laticrete Spectralock grout in white is also a great base for making repeatable custom color grouts. I used a Hemway blue powder with the grout and was able to match the color of a mid ‘50’s porcelain tub and sink perfectly - mix the color powder into the part C sand until the desired color is produced. Weighing the sand before and after the desired color is reached shows how much tinting powder is needed to make the matching color again, if needed. The 9 lb kits can be divided into 3 or 4 parts using a digital scale - the A & B components mix in equal weights (about 150g per quarter batch) and it’s possible to set aside amounts of A, B, and C for later as long as the proportions are maintained. I decided to use all of the C component in the sub-batches, which really shortened the workable life of the grout as you mentioned. I wish I’d seen your video and set aside some of the Part C in the batches I made. Results are excellent, I’d use it again, and the ability to make custom color grouts is a huge benefit if you want a color that isn’t available as a pre-mix.

    I've been using this grout for over 20 years. Never had any problems. A gallon of vinegar and a bunch of terry towels are your friends. You can use many cleaners on it to maintain your shower and floors. No sealer to strip off with harsh cleaners. A heat gun can be used to remove the epoxy if you mess up. Porcelain and Spectralock Pro is the way to go.

    I tried grouting for the first time, trying to repair missed grouting areas from my contractor. Spectralock Pro looks to be forgiving even on unglazed porcelain, I probably did first clean 30 min - 1 hour from start. Only about 3 sq ft of shower ledge so not a lot, but it was pretty easy for a beginner.

    If your lines are already in a 45° angle, such as this chevron design, just go up and down with your grout. I've never seen anyone caulk before grout. It seems like a good idea.

    thanks wish I knew this a year ago! I have been using Mapei ultra plus FA in my recent bathroom and kitchen and had no problems installing it. The bathroom is still like new but the kitchen counter (24x48 tiles, so not much grout) picks up brown a little bit too easily. It's cleanable but never 100 percent cleanable back to white (long story, only temporarily running tile counter)

    I am grouting Maravilla iceberg honed marble tile. (Floor & Decor) I’ve sealed it twice with Laticrete sealer. Should I have any concern about getting as aggressive as you have with the scrubby pad? Do I risk harming the marble finish? Also does the color change at all as it dries? I’m using light pewter. Thanks for everything. Your beginner video using Wedi for a bathtub install gave me the confidence to start this entire project.

    • @eltonnoway7864
      @eltonnoway7864 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You did right by sealing the marble first as marble tile can absorb grout coloring along its raw edges (known in the business as picture framing) however, a bigger concern marble is very soft and porous. Laticrete epoxy grout is sanded. If it's polished, you can't use sanded grout because you will see the tiny scratches from the sand that is a component of Part C. NOTE: The Laticrete website posts the following warning: "Some polished or soft marble/stone can be scratched by an epoxy grout. Always conduct a test area to verify suitability and acceptability of materials and methods as well as the results, prior to proceeding with the actual grout job.

    BRT, do you ever “tool” the grout joints? I’ve seen installers use wooden dowels and even the rounded ends of toothbrushes to pack and dress the joints.
    BTW - adding an easy to read timer occasionally in frame would be interesting to see.

      The pot life, working time, is often listed as being 60 minutes but it can be a lot shorter or longer depending on the temperature and airflow in the room where you are using it. The biggest hassle with epoxy grout is it sets up in your bucket before you finish the entire job area. However... the good news is clean up time is not a critical. Yes once it starts to set... the material is much stiffer and difficult to work with but you can aggressively scrub it with a "white" abrasive scrubbing pad and work it off the surface of the tile. Just be sure to use plenty of water so the pad can glide. Elbow grease and micro fiber cloths are key... just continue to wash dry and polish until you are satisfied the surface really clean of all epoxy haze. Trick: If you missed cleaning a small area you can hit it with a heat gun the next day and go after it with water and a scrubbing pad to remove it. If you start a job and it set ups before you completely finish... just do the scrubbing and cleaning part, let it dry for a day, then come back with a fresh batch of grout and continue applying. (Mixing smaller batches using a digital scale to maintain consistency between batches is a good way to tackle a bigger job)

    Golden standard by BRT! Every video got something to learn. And for those who needs 1on1 help, can signup for DIY Geek Membership. Have you ever tried using a bit thicker gloves when doing such jobs or you are one of those guys to categorically say "forget about gloves all together"? I gave up on ANY nitrile gloves loooong time ago. They just don't last 5 minutes with abrasive materials like mortars, grouts or mud for that matter. Then I came across "thickster" gloves. Not sure if that is a brand or model but those worked somewhat, and again on a 3-4-5 hour project constantly dealing with water and materials even those broke. My go-to are gloves that ladies use when washing dishes. More specifically, asian ladies since I can find those gloves only in asian (Korean) supermarkets. I know, I know ... sounds funny but those do a magic. You can also take them on and off vs all these others, once they are off they go to trash. I also like that they go up to my elbows. I hate when going for a sponge in a bucket full of water my hands and shirt get all wet. I highly recommend. They can be found at international/asian markets in section where the cooking dishes and utensils are located. Also very affordable. And as always ... Go BRT Go! 👊💪👍

    It is as if the Schluter membrane color was leaching into it.

    • @eltonnoway7864
      @eltonnoway7864 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep... its a bummer. Regardless of the manufacturer, white and really light epoxy grouts tend to yellow over time. White can eventually take on a creamy or french vanilla appearance. For this reason, even with the really light gray grouts many people wish they had gone a shade or two darker. NOTE: This is not a problem specific to Spectralock Pro, its a known problem in the industry. That said, testing has shown Laticrete provides the longest lasting white. The good news is if applied per the specified standards companies like Laticrete and Ardex will pay to have it redone under warranty.

    I just picked up all my materials. I'm concerned that I won't be able to get done in time. I have 250 ft² of kitchen floor to grout. They're 12x24 tiles so it should go faster, but should I try mixing maybe half of the container first?

    • @BathroomRemodelingTeacher

      Get the smaller units if you’re afraid. It’s pretty tough to cut everything in half and have an easy consistency. Floors and 12 x 24s go faster than walls. Not as much labor to pack them.

      I have installed it behind cooktops and stoves, as well as showers.
      It is an excellent product, a little harder to wipe clean than this appears in the video.
      The Mapei decades later shows zero staining in kitchens and stove top back splashes.
      I maintain properties and do multiple renos, so get to see all my works years later.

The kitchen floor grout is now almost black. The Shower grout is still holding up well a year in. Edit...Never mind, I saw you addressed it. I wish I saw this video a year ago. So far, the Spectralock1 has held up, just not it's stain resistance claims.

Urethane grouts have similar properties and advantages like epoxy but are easier to work with. (e.g. Bostik Dimension RapidCure)

    HOOOO MAN! You just mentioned simple grout. Absolute and utter garbage. It's kind of coincidence that my first herringbone job I did was grouted with homeowner provided simple grout. I've done a ton of tile work and really tried to do things at a high level with proper products snd mfg recommended installing, zero lippage, perfect lines if possible as cheaper tile can be not formed equal But boy did the herringbone open my eyes. The mats are NOT reversible in any way and the bottoms cant be flipped to finish off a top...
    The client provided the grout and the tile. There was probably about 7 different kitchen backsplash walls with challenging skinny tight spots down beside counters and up between windows and upper cupboards. I was really happy with the result!
    Then i started grouting with... Simple Grout. It was an absolute nightmare! I pre-wet the tile and started filling in on an easy section. It said to apply grout remove excess and comeback 2 hours later to remove haze. That was hugely suspect to me, after 15 minutes i tested it and shit was locking down hard!! In a progressively aggressive panic with more drastic measures, I ended up using a freaking scotch pad from under the sink to remove the haze not even caring about the grout washout at this point. The shit kept leaching haze on to the tile like an oil spill, so then quickly dry wiped it after with paper towel. I can't describe how mad i was. Utter garbage. I watched few videos of people using simple grout afterwards to explain my unexpected shitshow experience and the peopje in the videos didnt have a clue and were not professional in anyway. I had a prior rapport with the cleint so i described to him my experience and was very concerned moving forward. He said he would be happy to finish as it was the tilling he didnt have time for.
    I felt very guilty and disappointed i wasnt there to finish it, but honestly never have used a product in all the trades i do that failed worse to perform. The killer part is using pre-mix mapei or laticrete would have been a breeze. What a day that was.
