I found your channel because I’m doing a major bathroom remodel. I’m a die hard DIYer. It’s good to know what you don’t know before doing what you can’t do. Now I think I’m equipped to build it right to look awesome and last. Thank you for informing me. I’m too old to start a new business, but as I have worked for years with young men looking for life skills and direction, I find you a resource and inspiration for them. They may not choose bathroom remodeling, but their eyes are opened to opportunity and the satisfaction of doing a trade well. Work for your self, get dirty, start a business and don’t look back. And the big one (outside of the scope of your channel), like Odysseus avoid the madness of the enchantment of the Sirens; madness and ruin awaits for lack of discretion.
I started doing showers. I tell them I supply everything you don’t see. And your supply what you do see. Example. I buy sheet rock, mortar, membrane, any plumbing pipes….etc. The stuff you don’t see. Then they buy tile grout caulk vanity tp holder paint etc etc.
you speak a lot of truth. I think a lot of guys getting into bathrooms now do it for the wrong reasons and don't have this level of experience to humble them. Running a business is a chess game against more than yourself. Yes, generally we are our own biggest obstacle but people don't realize, there's homeowners out there looking to take advantage of you, other businesses and contractors looking to do the same, taxes and other business expenses. The strong survive is no joke. You have to be smart and learn from mistakes. So many bite off more than they can chew early on
@@BathroomRemodelingTeacher ohhhh yeah. took me a long time to learn that but I think that come with reading those red flags but also being confident that you can keep yourself afloat and not be too needed on every lead. learning to fish for leads and read them has been the biggest skill I learned after learning the trades and basic business
As always, BRTs words are worth of gold. Especially if you follow the channel and start putting pieces of information together as a priceless puzzle. Not to mention Steve's DIY Geek Membership allowing one-on-one consulting/coaching. One of very few channels that selflessly shares REAL LIFE work situations (a pro speaking here). Holy shit. Having been in the this field for 30 years i can honestly say you nailed it with this short video. If you only watch one video this is it. Well done.
I've only did one bathroom (my own) and i bet I've watched DAYSSSS worth of your content to prepare and do it. Even though I never plan on doing this as a business, this information is phenomenal! I mean its not everyday that a business owner would lay all their "methods" bare. You are my kinda feller ans thank you
Great video! What I do for pricing here in Canada is I use the Home Depot portal to pick out all the materials and supplies, this allows the home owners to view and purchase whatever I put in the shopping cart, I then charge for labour only, most guys in my area charge between $700 - $1,000 per day and that gets you a tile setter and a labourer some times two labourers for 8 hours of work. So for example, a two week job for me would be $100 per hour or $800 per day for 10 days I would charge $8,000 labour only.
@@teamdada2194How do you know that is too much? Is remodeling what you do for living? And imagine, he is in Canada so those charges are even higher in US. Uuuuuuh, the floor is lava.
If you're just starting out and watching this, forget all the fancy stuff. Present yourself well, know what you're talking about, show up on time, call people back, and do exactly what you say you're going to do. Also, most importantly, when something doesn't go as planned, be flexible and communicate. You do all the above, and the jobs will come to you, I promise you. People love telling other people about good experiences. They also love to tell people about their bad experiences, even more so. When you're starting out, you feel like you have to take every job, be careful who you're working with. If you get a bad vibe, move on.
You’re amazing! You could have easily charged for this wealth of insight. I am not personally going into a contracting business but these facts and figures could help any small business with set up. Thanks so much for helping your subscribers and viewers out. Much continued success to you! 🙂🤝😃
Thank you for sharing. The content is great and very informative. We are doing our first bathroom remodel (demo, prep and tiling) and its taking a whole lot longer than we had estimated however we find it very fulfilling and would like to focus on bathroom remodels from here on out. Fingers crossed we can get the grouting done by end of this week.
Thanks again for this video Steve. Incredible stuff. Very grateful for your kindness and sharing your wisdom and experience with the world. Can’t wait to put this into practice. Thanks again!
This answers a lot of the questions I am still asking my self and other contractors as I am starting out on my own. The van vs truck, bidding, the tub up the stairs😂which I’ve done myself without a dolly and it’s not a great idea. Bidding is my biggest challenge. I bid low to get the jobs and potentially learn while I am remodeling someone’s bathroom which isn’t a great idea but what else ya gonna do. They get a deal Anyway. Also tired of underbidding and working myself to death only To look at the job afterward and realize my work is good and I should have made more. Word of mouth when you do good work is crazy. Can get too busy if you know what your doing. I’m almost there. Just developing a system so I can get em done faster and better.
👍 it takes time for sure. But you definitely don’t want to be the cheap one out there that everyone talks about. Sure you get referrals, but with people expecting a crazy good deal!
But we have to make a competitive estimate to get the job in the start, once you are established, you can demand ur price, please make a video, on rough priceing a complete bath job, if you can break down the whole job, like tiling, installing tub, installing toilet, doing plumbing for tub, so as new comer we can have a idea, to give our price .Thanks.
I found your video just now my question is what do you use for the self leveling floor material. I just recently bought some self leveling crap it looked like plaster of Paris and it never leveled itself out
How about adding the customers email to a constant contact email marketing? Great way to get repeat business is they buy another used house. I don’t know the cost.
You can also pay google to have your ad placed on the first page. So, when someone search's key words that's tide to your trade you will be on the first page.
Do you discuss budget before putting all the time into presenting a quote like this? If so do you have a video talking about it? It really sucks putting the time into a detailed quote to find out you are way over what they were expecting.
I always start out with the discussion of ideas they have and their budget for their project. I dont ask for a set number but a ballpark figure to get an idea of what they are willing to pay and go forward. This also helps you learn to read your client. Pay attention on how they speak and react when numbers start coming out. If you dont do this then they might think you are going to do all their work for them for free. Want me to shop for you? sure, im charging you for my time.
This is beautiful done sir! I have no experience but I do have to remodel my own restroom, I’m scared to do so because I don’t know what to do first. I have a water leak too that is costing us a lot of water and I am done with it. What should I take care off first sir?
ya dont ask friends to help carry cast iron tubs :).....wifes sure....a good wife would always pitch in.....but there will be costs.....or repercussions.
Honestly I think the only thing I disagree with is saying $100 a month for a crm isn’t worth it. Anything that makes you more efficient and look more professional is absolutely worth it and if you can’t spare $100 a month then the person has no business being in business. I also don’t see stuff like that as an expense it’s an investment. Also I’d let people know when starting a business do not buy a 70,000 truck van and brand new trailer. A good condition 2004 will get you to the same jobs as a 2024
How long until the "holy shit that's so expensive i can do a bathroom for 4000 demo, labour, and material,.... Where do you live...". As a consumer, I actually really appreciate itemized estimate. It's not like you create it from scratch every time so more contractors should do it. 👍
Great video man. Ive been a one man bathroom remodeler for the past 5 years, and all your points are quite accurate.
I bought all your courses a while back and the variety of projects is excellent. I use them every time I write up a bathroom estimate.

You used the Sherwin Williams primer on drywalls. What paint do you use on shower ceiling and the shower walls?
Thanks. Interesting.
