    Hi, this is a really useful video thank you. I have the Atom LT (about 3 years old) which I mostly use as an insulation layer under my hard shell for skiing or when it’s not to cold, love that jacket. I am looking at getting something warmer and have been considering the Atom AR for a while. I have a size small LT. I hope you don’t mind me asking how much you weigh, is am a little shorter than you. My small LT fits perfectly but I don’t think I could layer it as well as you have in your video. I weigh about 66kg. Thank you.

    • @Hikaholics
      @Hikaholics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi and thanks!!! Really depends on your layering. But everything until freezing was fine for me. From there the jacket starts to run a bit cold. But like i said, that really depends on your layering and if you are moving a lot yes or no. Hope this helps?

    Good comprehensive review about this jacket. 👍 As soon as it gets a bit colder I wear a parka from the Gaastra brand. I consciously prefer a parka model because it also keeps your lower back warm better than with a bomber jacket. But that is obviously personal preference. My Gaastra parka is windproof, waterproof, breathable and light in weight. I also find the many very spacious jacket pockets (6x) that can be closed with a zipper. The Gaastra jacket also scores high on the sustainability ladder, keeps you warm thanks to the filling of recycled down, Re:Down and has a detachable inner collar. Furthermore, the parka has a blind closure and the 2-way zipper can move from top to bottom, and vice versa. In short, a fantastic jacket, with a truly sublime finish on the inside and outside! It also feels very soft and is wonderfully warm and comfortable to wear.

    • @Hikaholics
      @Hikaholics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Both jackets are great, it depends on how warm or cold you normally are. LT is a bit less warm than the AR in the core areas. But if you are very active I would choose the LT over the AR

    Guessing youre dutch by your accent lol - question: want to buy this for my partner. He only wears t shirts, doesnt layer haha and isnt into outdoor equipment, but still loves that kind of stuff. We walk outside for like an hour or so a day, also in wind and rain - dutch weather. Would you say its okay for a fast walking session in fall and winter in the Netherlands or too hot? Thank you for your video

      Hi!!
      Haha yeah, we are Dutch? You too? Then I will switch to Dutch.
      Sorry btw for the late response, but we were hiking in Sardinia.
      To answer your question: Deen wears this jacket for exactly that kind of weather. So temperature wise is the perfect jacket. Side note: the jacket isn’t waterproof. It is water resistant. So for heavy rain, Deen wears a rain jacket over it.
      Hope this helps!

    Is it possible to size down?

    • @Hikaholics
      @Hikaholics  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is but that compromises the insulating properties. There needs to be air between layers to insulate with warm air and if you size down, that can be too tight.

  • @dick91p

    Would this jacket be a good choice as an isolation layer for ski resort skiing?

    • @Hikaholics
      @Hikaholics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Great question. I didn't use this jacket for when I went skiing in Chamonix. It really depends in which temperatures you will be skiing. I used it for hiking in the winter. In France (where I am during winters) it doesn't get that cold that I need to use the AR for skiing. But I know some people in Canada who need this jacket for skiing, since it gets way colder up there.
      So, in short, it depends in which temperatures you will be skiing. Do you have more questions or does this answer help you?

    • @Hikaholics

      Can't say it has actually. It feels still the same as when I bought the jacket (almost 2 years ago now). It really depends on your layering and If you are moving yes or no. Between the Atom AR and the Micro Puff, which one would you say is the warmest and the most durable?

    • @Hikaholics
      @Hikaholics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for your question! We didn't do a comparison since Alette is wearing the MicroPuff and Deen is wearing the Atom. However, if we feel the fabric, we would say the Atom AR is more durable. The Micro Puff has rip-stop, but the material feels more thin. However, that's also the reason why the Micro Puff is more lightweight. The Micro Puff is also waaaaaay more compact versus the Atom AR. The Atom AR is warmer, since there is more insulation in the core compartment in comparison with the Micro Puff. For both of the jackets we can name pro's and cons. What are you looking for in a jacket, so we can give more detailed advise! Let us know. :)

    • @dobTriple
      @dobTriple 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your reply! Yeah, looks like the AR is 30 denier vs 10 on the Micro Puff. I bought a Patagonia Down Sweater last year and I'm fairly happy with it, but the shell is quite fragile, I'm always worrying about branches tearing a hole in it. It's also not as warm as I thought it would be and I've figured out Belgium is probably too wet for down jackets. 😅 So I'm looking for something warmer, more durable and weather resistant. Weight and packability aren't that important to me.

    • @Hikaholics
      @Hikaholics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dobTriple We had the same when buying the micro puff. But it in end we said to ourselves, "how many time do we actually bump against branches?" So far the 10 of the micro puff holds up perfect. But we are always very careful with our gear and take good care of it. You already made a decision?
