    Picked this mower up from my boss for free because it had been sitting for a good 3 or 4 years with an empty tank luckily. Would start with starter fluid but I finally noticed this spring was missing. Found a replacement and it starts up like a charm.

    I loaned my new lawn mower to a friend. It came back with problems. I couldn't start it. Come to find out the "friend" installed a ball point pen spring for the choke/air vane Spring. Thank you for the video. My lawn mower started on the first pull after replacing the correct spring. No more loaning my machines. Love your videos!

    Thanks! It is exactly the problem I have--while my spring was still on, the spring lost its tension and the air vane was just flopping around with little resistance. The engine would sometimes start then go into a rough idle and die, or wouldn't start at all. This video helped me track down the exact part. Problem solved!

    Hi Donny,
    This is a brilliant video to help solve what could mean an otherwise OK engine not working and is something I had a problem on when ‘volunteering to help a friend mend his lower while he was at work. It was confusing because I had not seen this kind of thing before. Their not that easy, when I did not know what the part was called, but after a full day checking stuff online I found what I wanted.
    Take care to both you and your wife

    Thought I was going to fix mine after see this great video. Butter fly is open but spring is intact. The butterfly will not shut even by hand. Almost like the flapper may have spun on its rod if that's even possible. Will start if I use starting fluid. It's a no prime carb also. Always been hard to start.

    I know I'm missing this spring (and the gasket between the air filter and the carb) Good to know it's this important and why it's not functioning correctly post carb clean. Just another 10 bucks or so for those 2 pieces and I should be back in business.

    On these auto-choke engines when you take the muffler there is a thermosat there and it falls off , the thing about it is they never run right after word. on mine i rubber banded the plastic leave and the metal lever together and when i put the muffler back on i rubber banded the metal levar forward and itll run perfect. Even with the auto choke thing rubber banded forward it still starts just fine for me and i use it commericaly. The funny thing is the auto choke also works VIa wind.

    Excellent video. Thank you for posting this helpful video. My near new Toro mower simply will not start with the butterfly closed. The spring is installed but looks stretched out. Will use the link you posted to buy another spring.
    However to start my mower I need to open the air filter housing and using a screw driver force open the butterfly valve open then the mower will start and runs okay . Any thoughts on that repair?

    Does it need the thermostat or no? Cuz i got mine used and it was broken. I do have the spring and lever and has tension. But everytime I turn it on, it's on full throttle, engine rpm at max.
    What could it be?

  • @VaJamie

    Any idea why? My mower was missing the air vane spring like you mentioned. I added the spring 790849. It started right up..but would not stay running. The choke was not opening. I replaced the factory spring with a 9/32" x 2 1/4" x .026 " spring. (Commonly called an SRM 20 size extension spring.} After this replacement, the mower starts just fine..runs fine..and starts when it gets hot as well. It seems to have solved my problem. Any idea why the correct 790849 spring would not work? I'm really curious as to why it would not. Thank you sir... in advance.

  • @ryanbristow116

    What is the plastic arm of the air vane connected to on the other side of it? I have the spring and everything looks good, but there is too much tension on the other end of that plastic arm. It's inside the housing and I can't see it or get to it, but it feels like something is obstructing it from moving freely. There is too much tension for any spring for the choke to close off. I can manually close it with a screwdriver by pressing it and the mower runs great. I remove the screwdriver and it instantly dies.

    Donny:
    long time subscriber. I just did this repair & mowed a section of lawn. After heat up and choke wide open I shut it down (would not restart) and then had to wait for it to cool down so choke would go back to position. Is this correct? Do you have to wait for the motor to cool or is their an adjustment I am missing? Thanks Danny

    Hi. I don't know if you are still active. Thanks for a great, clear video. My question: I have an old Snapper with a very similar (?same?) B & S motor. The previous owner stripped out all the autochoke-don't know why. Adding it back in, there is no tab to attach the vane spring to motor (hook on vane itself is clear from your video). Do you know if this is the part called the Cylinder shield (could be B&S 690836 or 790836); this was probably removed from lawnmower also. Thanks

    That is nice to know and I will remember that just in case I have that problem on my Craftsman mower. I have a question about the Kawasaki engine I have on one mower. It will start and run temporarily, then you can tell that it is losing power and about to quit on me. What can that be? It will restart and do the same thing for me. The mower is a Zero turn and made by John Deere. I am tired of paying the repair shop over $300.00 dollars each time it goes to the shop.

    Can anyone help me. I have a toro time master with a Briggs 190cc engine. It has a thermostat on the muffler and links to the carb choke lever. For some reason when it is cold or sits for 20-30 min the choke plate/linkage goes crazy and flaps open and close and a very very fast rate and runs like crap until it warms up after about 5 min.
    I’ve searched high and low but can’t figure it out. What would cause the choke flap to violent flap open and close!?

      Jimmy Larsson Sounds like it has a fuel starvation issue, does it have an adjustable screw at the bottom of the carburetor holding the bowl on? will it idle without choke? most commonly the passages in the carb plug up and they need to be disassembled and cleaned out. I have a 12 HP B&S as well and it is very picky in that department.

    • @jimboy7102
      @jimboy7102 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      1972FordF150 Yes, it´s an adjustable screw at the bottom of the carburetor. I will try to adjust that screw. thx for the help!

    • @MattsRageFitGarage
      @MattsRageFitGarage 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      There should also be an adjustable screw for the idle on top of the carburetor, it's kind of hidden by the air cleaner mounting base. But, you should be able to see it if you look for it. If it has the old style carburetor. It should being it's a 281707, same model as mine. I use a pair of needle nose pliers to adjust mine without taking off the air cleaner base.
