I just bypassed the auto choke with a wire. I let it run for 30-60 seconds with the "auto choke" doing it's thing to warm it up. Then I pull on the wire I put on the auto choke and hook it to the muffler shroud. Runs perfect, and the wire didn't cost me $30 (Like the replacement auto choke do-hicky would.) Mine was taking in excess of 3 minutes to warm up, and the auto choke was causing the mower to "stumble" every few seconds or so. Apart from that, the mower has always run like a champ. VERY easy to start.
Any idea the name or part number for the plastic piece the linkage hooks into? I need to replace the whole assembly and cant find that part in the engine manual.
It could be over filled or the engine could be worn and have a lot of blow by. If you tipped it over to sharpen the blade it could have happened if it was tipped carb down
I have the exact same mower. My mower is running with an up and down idle when cutting. I check the filter and I could see and smell a little bit of gas. I’m thinking it’s the carb and probably just going to replace it but wonder if it could be an auto choke issue ?
If there is a lot of black smoke coming from the motor then it is a auto choke issue. If there isn't then it sounds like a lean issue. Those carbs are very easy to clean if it is a lean issue. Personally I would just do areal quick cleaning
Thanks for this video. The other videos I watched jad a different system. I took this mower apart a year ago and I don't believe that linkage was even on it then. However I can't remember .I just except the carburetor was working perfect orher than having to manually choke it and unchoke it but no matter what it wouldn't run on fuel only ether which is not good I know and also means more than likely its the carb which was the irritating part. Anyhow I got ot all worked out today and fixed the issues but couldn't find any linkage for the choke anywhere. Anywaus all the other videos when I searched this mower model were different versions of auto choke. The device you bent to hold the linkage proper on mine I think will need to be replaced its literally rust colored, I still had a bit of spring to it but it really didn't feel like it had any return to it, however it still probably works well enough but I need the linkage anyways so im gonna see about finding a kit... otherwise I'll look at your video closer and just make a piece of linkage and see of I can use the one on it. I know it can't be tons of return on it or it would just stay that way regardless if you started it or not so I may just be expecting to much from it. Either way it'll be nice to get it lined out. I was really lost on where thenlinkage was at, or supposed to be, now I know its gone and how it works. I believe the self propelled still needs cable adjustment or something but I've made it work before so I know it's not too. Any ways simple video but much appreciated thanks
Or perhaps since it's for personal use ill manual choke it. The choke arm return device is $25 and the single piece of linkage is nearly $20 and it is over a week for shipping. Thats crazy compared to $40 for a carburetor, the springs, spark plug, gaskets, fuel filter which ot didn't even have stock, fuel cutoff adding as well, and more. I will be copying the linkage close enough to work and if it doesn't ill make it where I can just choke it and then uncooked it without it flapping around causing the irratic running. Im not about wasting money on a part that really wasn't the greatest planned design to begin with. Still your video was helpful thanks again. I wish I had a good still shot of the linkage laid straight out with an overall dimension but im pretty creative lol
what am i missing, the auto choke is open but it wont start because its been sitting for 6 months. without being able to add gas to the carburetor, its not going to start. what am i missing. do i need to take it apart and clean the gas lines and filter and put some gas directly in to the carburetor? why would they make a 2 stroke engine without a manual choke or a gas tickle button?
Most likely need to clean the carb. Just to clarify the choke is closed when it is cold correct? If it is open then that is your problem. It will need a choke mechanism
Sorry TH-cam second comments are horrible. I twisted the choke mechanism. Some times it gets stuck. That hopefully will release it. If it doesn't then a new one is needed. If you need one let me know I can post a link to a new one
@@PNWSmallEngineandLawn well see the choke mechanism is brand new and everything has been replaced but when it runs I see the linkage moving choke closed and idk else to do but replace the linkage next
So I installed a new carburetor because I got so fed up with the original clogging up but the new carburetor has a different connectivity to the auto choke function when it gets hot so I put custom made wire piece but it may not working properly as my rpm runs higher when hot. I have to tinker with this connectivity but has anyone else have this issue with a replacement carburetor where the connectivity fitting for the auto carburetor adjust when the engine is warm different? It's not a major issue as I can manually adjust the carburetor to lower the rpm but it is frustrating that my existing connectivity piece won't work. I think I might try drilling the hole bigger on the new carburetor to make the old connectivity piece fit but I don't want crack plastic doing so let along on a brand new part. By the way, the replacement carburetor package is something this lawnmower should have had when new: a fuel filter and gas shut off valve was included. Having a fuel filter solves most of the carburetor clogged jet issues and when you store it for winter, you can use the gas shut off valve to run the gas all out of the carburetor. And the air intake position is in the worst spot to get gunked up lawn debris when mowing. It is almost like the air in-take should have snorkle. I have a love-hate relationship with this lawnmower (love is very limited to the engine and propeller seem to be solid) as it has caused me headaches for almost a decade but now I finally figured out what it really needed all along. But I will never buy a Toro lawnmower ever again. Hondas are no doubt the best push lawnmowers out in the market.
I have had that issue with the connection before. In fact I am working on one right now with that exact issue. I am not s fan of these choke systems. Nothing but problems. People complain about Honda choke problems but they obviously never worked on these
You are preaching to the choir. Poorly designed. After 10 years of constant problems, I finally realized what this lawnmower needed all along: a fuel filter and gas shut off valve. This will solve 90% of your carburetor issues but also I built a custom snorkle around the air intake as that has mitigated the amount of lawn debris gunking up the air intake. Poorly designed as the air in-take shouldn't be so low to the ground.
This fixed my mower issue. Thank you so much.
Glad to have helped

Very nice. I have one person that had me remove the whole choke mechanism and he just uses starting spray every time
How did you bypass?
@@PNWSmallEngineandLawn what is the name of the part near the carburetor, like a pin

Life is too short to own one of these Kohler engines. . These things should have came with a repair manual a set of tools and a mechanic.

I do not believe they sell that piece by itself
I have one of these crap mowers. Any ideas on why oil would be leaking into the air filter?

You need to clean carb or take it to get cleaned and it’s a four stroke you don’t need oil in your fuel or a oil pump to fill
Did you bend linkage or the choke mechanism
No but sometimes you do have to bend it is cold and the choke is still open. Over time the use of the choke will cause it to go out of adjustment
@@PNWSmallEngineandLawn oh what did you twist to get it working cause my linkage will vibrate back and fourth closing the choke

What that’ part called the one you replaced?
Search Kohler auto choke and you will find two types. They look very different so match the one you have
Where would I find a linkage for the choke
To buy? If you looking for it on the mower if you take the top cover off you can access it
