    Yoooooo! You helped fix my ´98 Honda mower.
    Choke was stuck wide open. Dinked it shut, drained out the carburetor then tried to start it and it started! Mowed my yard, the neighbours yards too. Probably mow some more yards tomorrow. Thanks

    Excellent video! At 4:40 minutes into the video, there are 2 screws from the bracket on the right side going into the carb. There is a an 1/8 - 1/4" gap between those two parts. IMHO, if you tightened those two screws, it would shift the carb to the right and you would not have to trim the plastic arm of the choke. Please let me know if you agree with this opinion!

  • @carlmiller1034

    Great video Don! Seems like that is a flaw in the overall engineering of the top of the choke and the support bracket. I could see that driving a homeowner nuts, especially if the choke snaps back in place upon investigation. Thanks so much for sharing this. Great detail and explanation!

    Re. starter fluid , here in Australia ( not sure if it's elsewhere ) we have a product made by Nulon called "Start Ya Bastard" , basically an ether based aerosol . It's an expression muttered by many of us after pulling on that starter cord a number of times , now you can say it loud while reaching for the can :-)

    That is a great fix, Dony, and I gave away a mower which had a problem with the fuel leak in the line and probably that problem also and the lady got her sons to fix the mower for her, but took it home and never came back to mow her lawn. Thanks for that tip and I will remember it the next time I have a problem.

  • @christopherhubbard9677

    I had this issue on an older honda gvc 135 mower. I did everything set the magneto cleaned, cleaned the carb, changes the spark plug everything and same issue.
    Because it’s an older motor it’s has an older style choke that uses a choke rod every video I watched said clean the carb and they all had the auto choke system.
    Your video got me investigating and yes the air intake was wide open when on choke which sent me down a whole hour of learning how it worked, needless to say half a pull on the cord and she fired up like a champ!
    Thank you for your help.

    • @paulbillings1791
      @paulbillings1791 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will eventually see it.
      My suspicion is the the mower is being pushed rather forcibly underneath shrubbery that has been heavily pruned at the base and the sticks are pushing the brackets to the rear.
      Form both sides back forward in to parallel and trimming the extra plastic off will probably allow for more customers to keep cramming their machines under bushes and not replicating the same problem.

  • @BillynBertie

    I was so hopeful after seeing your video as I have exactly the same problem although on a Briggs and Stratton engine with a powered brushcutter/mower. I know it's not exactly the same set up but I removed the air filter and found there was nothing that could jam behind it and yet it still refuses to start unless I use a good squirt of quick start.
    As you say, the fact that it runs means no carb problem exists and no spark plug issues, but even after it has been running for a few minutes it just refuses to start again. This means great problems when out in the field working when you want to stop it and restart it to continue around some obstacle.
    If you have any other ideas of what I should be looking for I would be grateful if you could suggest what I might investigate, but I will look at the other vids on auto choke issues and so on.

      I think with the newer version of the plastic Briggs & Stratton style of carbs the factory fixed the flaw by cutting a rectangular shape hole into the metal side plate so that the choke lever won't rub against it....

    Great tip! Have you ever seen this problem on older Briggs engines with the flat, square air filter and primer bulb on the front corner of the engine? I get the same symptom no matter how many times I pump that primer bulb. The engine will only start and run fine with a shot of starting fluid. It does have a throttle speed cable but I think the choke may be automatic.

    • @ceejay9663
      @ceejay9663 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, in my case the fuel was too old and wouldn't fire/start without using starter fluid to get it going. B&S Max, 5 hp, Quantum engine, which the one you're referring to, I think. Happened to me multiple times, so it's not a "fluke." California climate, so weather not an issue.
