    A person will definitely know when there's a tear in an ACL! The knee will dislocate when moving horizontally especially if and when one runs or moves quickly! And in such case a surgical procedure is a must! I was a professional Baseball player but my career only lasted 7 game's as I tore the ACL in 1984! And back then it more than not ended a career!

      That’s exactly why we put out this video. Many doctors don’t perform these types of tests anymore because MRI is seen as the ultimate diagnostic tool. However, when done properly, these tests can be almost as accurate as an MRI. Nowadays, we really need to take charge of our own care. In my experience, the internet can be a great resource for gathering the information you need to actively participate in your healthcare decisions.

    I am 60 years old. I love to play table tennis competitively at a club. 6 months ago I felt some pain in my left knee after playing 4 consecutive days, then gym(day 5), then hiking(day 6), then played table tennis again (day 7). I hurt my left knee. My knee had some pain and yet it often clicks if I walk a little fast or twist it. I waited 4 month without playing table tennis then went back after I didn't hear clicking anymore and played 2 months. 2 weeks ago, I went to the gym (day1), then played 2 consecutive days. When I got home, the left knee was gradually getting worse. It felt painful around 3 inches below the knee cap and 1 inch towards the inside. I had to use crutches in order to walk for the 9 days. 16 days gone by, the pain in that area has almost gone, but I feel something inside my knee had some injuries on the lower outer part of the knee cap. When I walk, I don't dare to bend my knee too much because it feels like something is torn there. I would feel a sudden sharp pain when I just barely twist my knee. What happened to my knee?

    I watched this video because I have been recovering from knee and leg injury from a fall last year. I have to say the two of you got my full attention with your easy on the eyes video instructions. That said, you conveyed some very helpful information to give me a little better understanding of how those two parts of the knee function normally. I didn't need the actual tests as I did have an ACL tear injury as well as having some meniscus problems. What this video has helped me see is that the majority of my swelling, pain, and problems have come from my ACL tear and not so much from my meniscus. I am hoping you may have some other videos addressing treatment of these injuries. Thanks for sharing you knowledge.

      hi, Nancy. I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble. Clearly you have back problems as well as knee issues. That usually requires two very different doctors. The clicking and pain in the knee is potentially from a torn meniscus. Have you had an MRI? The numbness in the legs and pain with walking is more likely spinal stenosis. Unfortunately, you can’t see stenosis or narrowing on an x-ray and MRI is also required of the low back. Have you had the imaging studies you need?

    I've had degenerative low Back pain for years but two months ago I was lifting a heavy setvof rims and I felt something in my back. The next two days I had Back pain. The third day began servere back pain and I couldn't walk. I ended up in the emergency room and was diagnosed with SCIATICA on my left side into my pelvis and down my leg to my knee. It also caused swelling on my left side groin and left knee. The pain was excruciating for weeks. I went on medication and a cane. I lead an active life and an arduousjob and active runner. @Museville1 find a bench up against a concrete wall concrete floor too. Put your legs on opposite sides like a motorcycle push your feet HARD into the floor it will push your back against the concrete wall. Now that your back won't budge AT ALL grab the bench with both hands and pull your upper body down. That will reset your back. You should feel one pop! Then you have properly fix it. Lower back injury by pulling or lifting and avoiding further damage before attemp please. If you can't walk or get up then this may not suit.

      @@Museville1 another advice is me dealing with my back pain it caused me to need food and i was only able to workout intermittenly. i was on verge of being depressed. I found that i could take a small futon bed and since it was small enough to fit in my doorway i hooked it on my pullup bar and i also hooked a toolbelt that i used to clamp my jaw and side of head i stood on the futon that was hanging in the door way, i used it as a ladder and releaved the stress on my lower back. quite the setup but that was when i was on verge to find the above solution. to be specific it not only allowed me to safely pull my spine it also could swing which i can't tell you how much it helped to releave that pressure because i couldn't afford an inversion device.
      *put the toolbelt on the back of your neck and clamp it to the sides of your head while it's hooked up. the half-futon is essentially just a ladder to put your feet on and it hangs on the pullup bar.

    • @balluse
      @balluse ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are not healed whatsoever. Homeopathy might feel nice but does absolutely nothing for the knee itself.
      Your ACL cannot heal, period. Know that without surgery, you will need extensive physical therapy to gain back stability and strength. Even with that, you are at a higher risk for knee injury without having the ACL reconstruction. So please be careful. And save your money with the homeopathy, it's placebo and nothing else. You can get that cheaper elsewhere.

Was told I damaged cartilage, but don’t know how true that was and I was so young at the time only 17-18 if I knew than what I know now I would have left the practice and never got surgery. In Lachman's testing, flex the knee to about 25 degrees. This allows the greatest degree of separation of the joint surfaces and removes the tension in the hamstring group of muscles. Maintaining the knee in an extended position will retain the tension in the hamstring making the test difficult to prove positive or negative. The hamstring group of muscles performs a similar mechanism to that the of the ACL in that they reduce anterior translation of the tibia. Tension in the hamstrings therefore will restrict anterior translation of the tibia. Thus by, flexing the knee, you will remove the tension in the hamstrings and allow for a much more dynamic test and greater degree of efficiency and accuracy.

    Went to the hospital after I couldn't walk for two days, I Had been dancing, I heard 3 loud pops, Go through the outside, inside & inner portion of my knee. I went to the doctor, did some x-rays. (They didnt think i needed an MRI) They told me nothing was wrong with my knee. Minus an abnormality underneath my kneecap.
    I went home, the best way I can describe what happened then, is what I believe to be my meniscus... rolled out, first on the inside. I had to roll/massage it back in to where it came out of, which stopped the pain. Then as of last night, in the same general area on the outside of my knee it rolled out, 🙃 I had to roll it back Into place.

The pain has always stayed in the same place. I've had 3 hrs of stabbing pain in the area( about drove me nuts). My surgeon said at this point it is unlikely the pain was caused by the cyst, as he can't feel it on exam. The pain is not posterior anymore, but always on the medial side. I had no pain at all in my knee, until the trauma happened and In 10 min I couldn't put any weight or even stand on my leg, and intense pain, so I know the injuries happened all at once. But my surgeon couldn't rule out that some of the mechanical symptoms could be the result of the loose bodies as well as the meniscus. I think I had no swelling due to the Baker's cyst as it was described as moderate. I had a lot of trauma to my knee and my ortho said it was a MESS! A nightmare injury. My pain is located where the medial meniscus is on my left knee. Mobility is a struggle with continuous walking, like going to get my groceries. I take one crutch with me, to only use when discomfort occurs. I can only step forward with my right leg. My left leg steps to get level with my right leg. I know that to try and step forward with my left leg first, would cause a lot of pain. Its been 5 weeks now, with this condition. I will now try to see a GP, a first time for this injury. Hopefully he or she will refer me to a Chiropractor. Fingers crossed.

    My knee feels like its going to give out on me. Especially on stairs. It's swollen some of the time. I have to be super careful when stepping down of curbs, etc. It's a medical meniscal tear confirmed by MRI. Why were these symptoms described as an acl tear in the video?

    • @BestPracticeHealth
      @BestPracticeHealth  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The kind of symptoms you’re having sometimes go along with knee instability caused by a torn ACL. But there is definite overlap with meniscal tears. The MRI is the answer. Since you know what’s going on, you don’t have to worry about the symptoms, just getting the right treatment.

    So I did have an injury, but I was just walking and stopped abruptly. Seemed like at the time that I had overextended it. It was immediately painful and within seconds I was barely able to bear weight. Iced it with 30 mins. It didn't swell a huge amount, but it was very painful. In the following 3-4 days, I continued to have significant pain and was still unable to bear weight. I called my ortho but they couldn't get me in. I should have gone to the ER, but someone convinced me that they wouldn't anything for me. I continued ice and the pain has reduced significantly, however it does seems to have some fluid in it and it does "catch when I'm bending my often. I am going to see the PA for my ortho doctor on the 25th.

    The issue which I have is that I can do all range of motions even I have been playing football ever since I have got the injury and probably 5-6 months or more time has passed . But I don't feel pain even while playing and doing all types of motion even I can lock and straighten my knee without any pain or issue but the only issue is that when I'm standing straight at that time I can't completely straighten my right knee like I ca do with my left knee. And whenever I do so while standing straight I feel like my knee is rushing back but at that time also I don't feel much pain it's like almost nil it just gives an unusual feeling with a little little pain which doesn't affect at all. But it's clear that there's a issue but I'm unable to understand what to do as I'm not feeling pain in any part of knee it just feels that it'll go back and locks a bit when I straighten it up that also when I stand straight it doesn't happen when I straighten it up at any other angle. And there is no popping sound and no swelling but I do have knocked knee and and flat foot. SO WHAT SHALL I DO PLEASE TELL? If u can atleast tell which part of my knee has been most probably been injured it will be a great help.

    • @BestPracticeHealth
      @BestPracticeHealth  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm. I don't know. My first though is that one of your ligaments is injured and the pain comes when you maximally activate that ligament. It could be a meniscus as well. If you are playing football without pain its hard to imagine your knee is unstable. It sounds like you need to be sure you are using your knee safely to maximize the chance of a good and full recovery. That's what a physical therapist typically does.

      It sounds like you have Runner's knee, also known as patellofemoral pain syndrome. Runner's knee is a common condition among runners that causes pain around the kneecap. The most effective treatment for runner's knee depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. Here are some general recommendations:
      Rest and ice: Give your knee a break from running or any other activities that aggravate the pain. Apply ice to your knee for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, several times a day.
      Physical therapy: A physical therapist can help you strengthen the muscles around your knee, improve your running form, and correct any imbalances that may be contributing to the pain.
      Knee brace: Wearing a knee brace can help support your knee and reduce pain while you're running.
      Anti-inflammatory medication: Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin can help reduce pain and inflammation.
      Patellar taping: Taping your kneecap can help stabilize it and reduce pain while you're running.
      Orthotics: If your runner's knee is caused by foot or ankle problems, wearing orthotics (shoe inserts) may help. Ask you physical therapist whether or not you should see a podiatrist.
      Surgery: not indicated given the pain is only when you run.

    I had a longboarding fall at about 25-30mph where I fell off the board directly onto my right knee at maybe 17-18yrs old. The road boted some big holes in the skin around my kneecap in 3 separate places. One directly in the center of the cap, one on the outside of my cap, and one basically where my acl should be. Of course I couldn't hear if there was a pop as I had headphones in. Fast forward maybe a month or so and on a day where I probably walked 10miles or so, my knee gradually got stiffer and stiffer to the point I couldn't bend it because of how intense the pain was. Had to stop walking and call someone to get me pff the trail. Swelling was intense, had to stay home because of the pain for maybe a week or two at least. This was almost 10 years ago now but to this day I've never mentioned it to a doctor. I KNOW that something is wrong, my right doesn't feel the same as my left in any capacity. Strength, flexibility, range of motion, etc. My right hurts after strenuous activity now when my left doesn't. Would that type of impact potentially cause issues with these cartilages and ligaments? Or would you tear a meniscus/acl from twisting/overextending?

    • @BestPracticeHealth

      You are at risk for post traumatic arthritis. That is where you knee develops arthritis as a result of structural damage that happened in the long-boarding accident. If you do develop knee pain, you should treat it like any arthritis: get an x-ray to stage it then see the right doctor depending on the stage. Grade 1 or 2 is chiro or primary, grade 3 is sports medicine ortho, grade 4 is joint replacement ortho. Make sense?

    Hello Doc! I now know for sure I have a medial meniscus injury (Left Knee) based on the McMurray test. I argue this because I feel clicks and pain upon testing on the left knee. In addition, I am a soccer athlete, and I think I may have picked up the injury by kicking the ball wrong. My pain scale originally started as a 7 out of 10 (knee). Now, my question is am I able to recovery without getting any surgery on my meniscus? Furthermore, I mean this by resting, icing, and being inactive for a few weeks in the sport. So far, this method has worked, I have been able to subside the pain in my meniscus. Currently, the pain is now 3 out of 10 since the start of the injury. However, it's been almost 2 weeks now and the pain has been able to go away but gradually/slowly. In your opinion, will I be able to fully recover using this resting method? Or is surgery the only way to fixing the pain/discomfort? Thank you, really helpful video !!

    I think I had medial meniscus tear after climbing over couch. I planted left foot on seat of couch and stretched my right leg over back of couch then suddenly felt and heard a loud pop in my left knee as I moved my right leg to the left and instantly fell off couch onto ground with incredibly intense ans overwhelming 'funny bone' pain in my left knee.
    I couldn't straighten it fully for over a month and had to keep my left leg bent and off ground while using crutches to get around for a few days. I didn't have any bruising though and could bend knee fine. I had to use just the left crutch for an extra week or so before I could confidently limp around with left knee constantly bent looking like a zombie.

Here is a quick review I wrote of the different causes of knee pain and their usual treatments: bestpracticehealth.tv/knee/knee-pain-treatment-options/. If you have no red flags and home care fails after 3 weeks consider seeing a doctor and getting an x-ray. The rest of your treatment options depend on what the x-ray shows. Mind you, I was sitting down, crossed my left knee over my right, guess my left knee didn’t like that, and popped. There’s no swelling, though I am a healthy teenager, who had a previous knee injury, patellar tendinitis. I was just curious if just ONE minor event would cause all this pain, burning, sharp, achy?

I do not go to any therapy or even surgery because its expensive. I decided to rehab it by myself. After a month, it works good and back. I can walk properly, however, if I run so fast l should make an extra cautious not to get injury again. Same thing like if l play basketball when my left foot landed first where l had my knee has history of injuries. It goes to get injured again. What should l do? Is my knee coming from an ACL tear or meniscus injury?

      It sounds like you have a knee injury that resolved with a normal x-ray. That was probably a partial ACL tear, strain, or a meniscus tear that healed. Complete ACL tears require reconstruction which involves nearly a year of rehabilitation. A meniscus tear can often be repaired, or at least cleaned out (meniscectomy) with immediate pain relief. While torn the knee is unstable and is therefore a t risk of damage with walking and everyday movement. To me, ACL is far worse. What do you think?

    Mine was both overtime and an event. Had problems off and on with left side of right knee. But then one day when I was not symptomatic I got up from a floor, planted my right leg to stand and that was the event that started severe pain. That was 22 days ago and although after Ice, heat ibuprofen, etc it's much better but still have that little bump on my knee and can't walk over 10 minutes without getting pain . So now what since it was over time and an event that triggered a relapse?

    • @BestPracticeHealth
      @BestPracticeHealth  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      well, it sounds like you have severe knee pain three weeks after an injury and have failed home care. You meet the criteria for an MRI of the knee at this point. Have you had one? A doctor visit and imaging is your next step. You should have an x-ray before the MRI as if it shows moderate to severe arthritis then, the treatment arm of the pathway is different.

    Thank you folks for a great instructional video. I would say mine is the inside miniscus torn in the right leg. Too painful to walk on at the present. Hope it heals on its own. It became really bad in November, then healed up about 80% but then I started doing a lot of outside projects including heavy bags of cement etc. Although this has happened to me several times over the years. Yet 2 years ago I was running without pain. But now I can't even walk without pain. Dont have a lot of cash-o-la and not sure how much medicare will pick up of all of this.

      Wow! I'm worried you are not getting the care you deserve. Running 2 years ago and now can barely walk? Medicare covers x-ray, MRI, arthroscopic surgery for a torn meniscus, and knee injection. You need to see a sports medicine surgeon. If you live in Phoenix I'd advise Dr. Phil Bennion. Awesome doctor.

Still feeling slight discomfort where my patella is but I’m thinking it’s because the muscles are a little weak around the knee. Did I just injure my meniscus or did I also retear my ACL? I had my ACL reconstructed 6 months ago. The injury happened a year ago when I landed awkwardly after a jump and my knee subluxed. There were also minor tears to my MCL and posterior medial meniscus. Now, five days ago I missed a step while walking down the stairs and landed pretty hard on my surgical leg and I felt a crunching/grinding sensation near the inner side of my knee (different spot from my original meniscal injury). When I injured my knee the first time it was so tender that I could not bear to put any pressure on it until a week after the injury. Also, it immediately got super swollen and I had basically no range of motion. With this recent incident I was able to walk on it immediately afterwards but with some noticeable tenderness in the medial region. I did not notice any swelling until several hours later and it was not nearly as bad as with my first injury. Up until today, it had not been painful to the point where I've needed to use crutches and my knee only started to feel slightly unstable the day after. However, while I was adjusting my sleep position last night, I moved my leg into a position (leg bent at 90 degrees with the inside of my knee facing down and my foot pushing up on my covers) which caused my knee to lock or something and immediately caused an intense ache on the inner side of my knee. Since that happened, my knee has been much more tender and difficult to walk on to the point where I might need to start using crutches. Based on the crunch noise I heard during the incident and the area of my knee that is tender, my gut tells me that I did something to my meniscus. But now I'm a bit worried that I may also have retorn my ACL. At first I wasn't worried about a retear since this incident was not as traumatic as the first one, it didn't cause as much pain or swelling and I didn't immediately feel any instability. However, it occurred to me that my body just might not respond as strongly to a second second ACL tear, especially when it's not my native ACL. That thought coupled with the slight instability I've started to feel in my knee has me a bit worried. I have an appointment to see a doctor at my athletic clinic in one week and they will provide the requisition for an MRI. It will likely take another few weeks before I can get the MRI, meaning might be a while before I get a confirmed diagnosis. Since it's another week before I can see a doctor I was wondering what you guys think is wrong with my knee? And what should I do with it while I wait for a diagnosis?

      bummer! The symptoms certainly are concerning for a new municipal injury, or less likely a recurrent ACL tear. Have you considered going back to your Orthopedic Surgeon instead of the sports medicine clinic? Once you’ve had a repaired ligament, it’s really a complicated situation, and the best doctor to care for it is an Orthopedic Surgeon board certified in sports medicine.

      I'm truly sorry to hear about your continued knee pain six months post-arthroscopic meniscal tear repair. It's frustrating to endure surgery and then find yourself in more pain. Your meniscus should have healed by now, allowing you to resume normal activities. Have you had an MRI of the knee since surgery? It may help show what is wrong. In any even,t since you're still experiencing discomfort, here are some possible reasons:
      Incomplete Healing: The meniscus might not have fully healed, either due to infection or a technical error in surgery, leading to persistent pain.
      Re-Injury: It's possible that you re-injured the area, hindering the healing process.
      Other Structural Issues: There might be other undetected issues in your knee joint.
      In situations like this, it's crucial to consult a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. If your current surgeon fits this criteria, persist in seeking their expertise. If not, consider obtaining a second opinion from a qualified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. Don't hesitate to advocate for your health and find the right solution to alleviate your pain.

      It's hard to tell. The confusion with a partial ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tear arises because both conditions can produce similar symptoms, such as pain and instability in the knee. Physical examination tests, such as the McMurray's test for meniscal tears or the Lachman test for ACL integrity in the video, can be very helpful in diagnosing knee injuries. These tests are often part of a comprehensive examination performed by a healthcare provider to assess knee stability and pinpoint the source of pain.
      Honestly, given your injury history, whatever happened happened. What you need to worry about is the future. If arthritis is beginning to develop, physical therapy can be very beneficial. Therapists can design a program that helps maintain or improve joint function, reduce pain, and possibly slow the progression of arthritis. For meniscal tears, physical therapy focuses on strengthening the muscles around the knee, improving flexibility, and reducing the load on the knee. Lifestyle changes such as weight management, regular moderate exercise, and joint protection techniques can also play a significant role in managing symptoms and maintaining joint health.

    what if i have both? i was competing in a basketball tournament when it happened. for the first few days i cant walk, i cant even bend my knee let alone walk. after the sweeling stopped, i went to the doctor to get it checked and my left knee MRI test shows that i have a full torn ACL, partial torn PCL, and also a torn in both of my lateral meniscus (anterior & posterior). my local doctor said i have to get surgery for both my ACL and meniscus tear, but not for the torn PCL. whats the best course of action for such occasion?

    • @BestPracticeHealth
      @BestPracticeHealth  ปีที่แล้ว

      A complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is typically managed with arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, regardless of any associated meniscus injuries. Given that surgery is necessary, it's an opportune time for the orthopedic surgeon to address any meniscal issues. To ensure you receive the best care, it's crucial to schedule an appointment with a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon as soon as possible.
      Look for a surgeon who is board-certified and has extensive experience in arthroscopic knee surgery. They will be well-equipped to assess your condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment, which may include meniscectomy or meniscal repair if feasible.

    what would cause a knee to catch on the medial posterior Knee when performing flexion to extension. it only happens when the knee is bent beyond 90 degrees, so about 30-45. mechanism of injury was using a seated hamstring curl machine with not very much weight but enough that I think I strained the hamstrings /tendons. when I get the catching sensation I usually put pressure on the hamstring tendon and it releases. Kind of feels like the posterior medial tibia is catching on a tendon as it rotates. There is some tenderness but no sharp pains

      Clicks, pops, and locking are all signs of a torn meniscus. It could also be the ACL, it’s hard to tell for certain based on this information. I would say it’s been three weeks, if you’re still having considerable pain and you’re not getting better better than it’s really time to consider an MRI scan of the knee. That is the only way to know for sure. The MRI will help you understand if you need additional treatment now, or should we wait it out and give your body more time to heal.
