UCI can govern how it pleases. Anyone who isn’t a pro is unaffected. Want to sit in a hyperbaric chamber on O2 before a ride? Go for it. Use steroids until your nads disappear? Why not. Thins the herd. Wear a carbon fibre dalek helmet? Sure. Just book a massage therapy sesh for the following day.
Sport governing bodies are formulaic. They are this way to level a playing field. If it was about the consumer or enthusiast rider, they’d have put a cap on bike cost a long time ago. Or maybe a limit on the number of chain rings per season (CF chain rings aren’t exactly “durable”. Nor are they affordable as a regular use item for the street.

It's actually totally unnecessary. There's already a ban on socks above the knee and all they had to do was enforce it.

Why not have time trials be ridden on standard road bikes? The competition is leveled, the strongest rider wins, and it would cost NOTHING to implement. Time trials only comprise a fraction of all cycling events and I believe having pro riders using equipment most road cyclists have makes their performances more relatable.

What I ask myself even more: why is it called GCN Tech? With nearly every topic there is a lack of knowledge displayed. It’s frustrating and embarrassing. Even if it’s all “sponsored” these low quality “shows” are not acceptable. I suggest calling it “GCN Fun” or similar. The tech attribute doesn’t fit at all.

Re the aero-helmet debate. In the '96 Freestyle Whitewater World Championships held on the Ottawa River in Canada, there were rules in place that scored certain tricks higher and lower than others. Cartwheels were higher than back-surfs, and so on. Flat-spins(360degree rotation on the glassy part of the wave were almost impossible at the time, so they were the highest scoring trick. All the boats at the time were round-hulled(displacement). One maverick, Corran Addison(Riot Kayaks)read the rules, and designed a flat-bottomed kayak(planing hulled)with pinched ends, thereby allowing the boat to flat-spin and cartwheel with ease. The boat was completely within the written rules, yet radically different from every other boat in the competition. After much grousing from athletes from other companies represented at the competition, the day before finals, the governing body changed the scoring for the flat-spin and cartwheels, essentially "leveling the playing field" for the other competitors. Corran famously sat in the eddy holding a sign reading "It's wrong to change the rules the day before the competition" during his three ride's allotted times in protest. Obviously he did not win the World Championship that year, but, his design, the Glide(marketed as "The Boat That Changed The Rules") started what would become a 12 year "arms race" between he and all the other kayak manufactures to come up with the perfect design for every venue. Today, almost 90% of whitewater kayaks have elements of the Glide in their DNA, from extreme Class V boats to river-runners to sub-6ft freestyle boats. Arguably, changing the rules that day in '96 altered the whitewater kayak industry forever. I think the UCI should think about the unintended consequences of "banning" anything. with the knowledge that someone somewhere is going to push the boundaries of any new rules written in the search for more and more performance. Thanks for reading, as always, love the show!

The banning of the Specialized head-sock after it had been in-use for well over a year is ridiculous and definitely makes the UCI seem reactionary at best. I completely agree that with the exception of imminent safety issues, equipment rules should not be changed mid-season. It is understandable that the UCI may want to institute a different direction for a given technology/topic, however, teams must be able to plan for and make equipment choices for an upcoming season without having to worry if the rules will spontaneously change midseason.

Cool to see a shout to low-rider bikes, popular for decades among California kids emulating their elders in Impalas and all those colorful chrome-laden classics. And those bikes were based on the 20" Schwinn Sting-Ray frame and banana seat. And I loved my Sting-Ray from '67 to '75--well, everything except for the fenders. And I still remember excitedly removing them so it'd be lighter and faster, sort of the opposite of the later low-rider trend but as an eight-year-old in San Francisco, I was serious about speed and another kid helped me take them off. 😀

Pls. Wealth is also part of an athlete’s toolbox of abilities too. So you would limit an athlete, simply because their competitors can’t “out-money” them? How is that fair to the competitor? “I’m sorry, you can’t use your bike because Tom back there can’t afford it” that’s ridiculously unfair.
By that vein, if we limit access to wealth, let’s also then limit the competitor’s access to training and fitness. That sound silly fair; if no one can buy an advantage, then no one should be able to train for an advantage either.

    • @robertrensch6835
      @robertrensch6835 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I completely agree with the point about fairings. The only reason these helmets are allowed is that when the UCI banned fairings on the bike, they didn't think about fairings on the rider, and this created a loophole. The front and side bulges could be considered either "fairings," or "nonessential" (like the head sock), but the real problem is that UCI's rule book has been cobbled together without clear focus. Too many of the rules are about banning what they didn't want at some particular time, rather than about creating or preserving or even clarifying what they do want.

At 5:53: Alex, how about if the TT world championships were on unbranded, identical TT bikes. No weight limit because, of course, the larger riders would require larger frames. Suppliers could be selected by lottery, as not every frame, wheel, or component manufacturer would want to supply their product in an unbranded form. The problem with the Olympics is that it's only every four years. Great discussion!

Aero aero aero. As a track rider I’m acutely aware that wheels, frames, bars, helmets, skinsuits, socks indeed every component is being optimised for aero advantage and has been for years. For the UCI to now ban a helmet that has been ridden for a year or one they have sanctioned which fills the air pocket behind the aerobars and makes the bike and rider “system” into more of a bullet, is basically closing the stable door after the horse has bolted.
We either embrace all aero advantages or none.

The headsock works by smoothening internal airflow over hair and ears back to the rectangular "exhaust" of the helmet. Probably a bankrobbers beanie would work quite well too. As long its not attached to the helmet, its legal.

From this incident, it's clear that UCI wields immense power. Their explanations often seem ambiguous or forceful, leading to speculation about possible behind-the-scenes dealings or profit motives. The FIFA bribery scandal of 2015 is still fresh in memory, underscoring the need for transparency and accountability.

I have one of those Specialized “Mirror” saddles with titanium rails and I’m almost ashamed to admit that I love it since I’m a leather saddle snob (I have always ridden Brooks or Berthaud saddles). My only issue with them is that they are prone to creaking - Specialized warrantied one of them for me and the second one is fine. Before someone correctly points out that leather saddles creak, that’s fixable as you can fix the issue with leather conditioner.
I am a year-round cyclist and I ride in terrible weather and you definitely get mud and bits in the weave but, as Alex points out, it’s not hard to clean by spraying the saddle.

How about have ‘showcase races’ for manufacturers to demo new gear after the grand tours are completed each season? It may invite some increased interest in late-season races, and it would give the UCI the winter break to consider whether to allow newly developed gear for the following season?

What a disappointment that the specification available in Aus, especially the safety futures and creature comforts such as steering wheel controls are not available in our SA sourced products!
