    Thank you! Crazy to think that both Svetlana and Kim would be off the podium a year later at the Olympics. Though I always felt Svetlana was probably a bit underscored in Barcelona.

      not really, her routines had very little difficulty compared to others. Her beam, floor and bars simply were eclipsed by the others

      @@metsdudenjI agree she finally received the score she deserved, and not those inflated one

    Svetlana’s long lines on the bars. Marvellous.

    Zmeskal was extraordinary but her performance gets maligned because of the appearance that Svetlana was underscored. Both were great.

    I remember being very focused into that competition because I had tickets for the all-around for the Barcelona Olympics and I wanted to know the favorites to look out for.
    Interesting that the next year, the Olympic medals went to the same three nations but to the gymnasts that finished 5th, 6th and 7th here!

    I remember both of these gymnasts so well. In this competition I thought Zmeskal definitely deserved the win. Her difficulty was higher and she had more energy and power in her routines. I was very underwhelmed by Boginskaya’s bars routine but she was also great

      @@markb7163 ARE you sure? I read in all around final Bogi din't congratulate to Smeskal, but only with Bontas, almost same thing happened in 92 with Shaldina and Pascual. I think Smeskal din't congrtaulate to Bigoisnkaya after vault final

    • @markb7163
      @markb7163 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @Marketoromagnolo I read that Zmeskal did that to Boginskaya first and it was mentioned in a broadcast of that competition as well. Regardless the nedia was always trying to stir up controversy and rivals between gymnasts. Boginskaya and Zmeskal are good friends now.

    Interestingly, in a press conference Karoly said that Boguinskaya was finished, but he coached her after 1992. I never understood how she agreed to work with him. And yes, Smeskal seems crappy here.

    • @worldartgym
      @worldartgym  หลายเดือนก่อน

      By all appearances, she was pretty much done in 1992, her difficulty was waning as well as her strength. Karolyi wasn’t entirely incorrect. I’m not sure what her motivation was in returning, but she was a different athlete in 95, 96! Stronger, swinging some mean bars (with grips), and adding difficulty! The 1993-1996 CoP was especially forgiving for an athlete staging a comeback, since front tumbling received very high ratings. As for working with Karolyi, I forget if she worked with him first in Houston or with Alexander Alexandrov. Either way, they appeared to mend their feud, whether exaggerated in the press or not. She appeared to have nothing but nice words for Karolyi when he passed.

    Zmelskals bars should not have scored that high. Low releases, leg separation and no pirouettes/ turns?

    • @worldartgym
      @worldartgym  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Believe it or not, a full pirouette was not required in that code. Crazy but true. She had one in her 1990 routine (as well as a Jaeger requiring a grip change) but Karolyi obviously changed her skills after ‘90.

    • @Johannes.P.A.Westblom
      @Johannes.P.A.Westblom หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ I know it wasn’t required per se in the code of points, but should still have made the difference between the gold when the margins were so small. If routines from the 70’s makes yours look essy, it’s outdated.

    Boginskaya is spelled wrong in the Title and this was in the lead up to her 2nd Olympics in Barcelona in Summer 1992 where as that was Zmeskal's first and only Olympics aged 16 min age to compete was 14 the youngest girl on the US team in 1992 was Kerri Strug 14 years 8 mos. the oldest was Wendy Bruce age 19 years 4 mos. only 5 US Gymnasts have ever won 5 medals at the Olympics Mary Lou Retton 1984 Shannon Miller 1992 Nastia Liukin 2008 Gabby Douglas 2012 & Simone Biles 2016 the last Olympics in which Gymnastics was scored under the perfect 10 System was 2004 Athens Greece then it changed to difficulty + Execution the highest difficulty I've ever seen on bars was 7.2 Kaylia Nemour of ALG & Qiu Qiyuan of China though their execution scores were .2 different 8.5 and 8.3 respectively the highest difficulty on floor ex was Simone Biles and had she not gone out of bounds twice her execution score would've also been highest 8.433 so total would've been 15.333

      Foreign language characters (such as in Russian) can be translated differently into English. There is no equivalent for the English letter Y in Russian.... That particular sound, in "skaya" looks like a backwards N in their alphabet but it translates to either an i or a y because of the sound it makes.

    • @thesovgc
      @thesovgc วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@scottw6704the last letter of her name Богинская is a backwards r, я, and is usually transliterated to the Latin alphabet as "ya", "ja" or "ia". The backwards n is И which typically sounds like "eee". It's usually transliterated as "i" in English. Й is a separate letter that can be transliterated as "y". Boguinskaia is the French transliteration of her name, which is what the Soviets used for their passports IIRC.
