I watched a gentleman absolutely hammer fish after fish at a trophy lake in Merritt, BC with this pattern. He handed me a black fly tied with schlappen for tail and wing with the red rib on body and red mylar strips tied around the Thorax. Thankfully, he mentioned your name as a credit to the creator and would have to say that this fly is very productive and a must have in anyone's fly box! Thanks for this wonderful tie, Mr. McPhail!
Hi Davie Thank you for the fly. I copied it for a recent fishing trip in South Africa but I added a red glass bead to the head. It was the most successful fly for the weekend on both Trout and Bass.
I use a colored marker on holographic pearlescent tinsel and hit it with bug bond or a coat of head cement or nail polish - fish don't seem to mind. Love your techniques. I've tied over 40 years and learn lots watching your videos.
This is very useful style of nymph that I have had a lot of success with. The one comment I would make is that I add a little weight to the thorax. This is primarily to improve the attitude of the fly in the water since it is a 'swimming' pattern. The weight distribution of the hook makes the unweighted version arse-heavy, leading to an unnatural presentation when retrieved.
I have been watch you for a while. I normal tie jigs ang eggs for salmon and steelhead, nothing smaller that a size 4. Just tied some size 12s for trout. It was harder than it looks on that little hook.
Another excellent fly and video, Davie, thanks. Would black ostrich herl work ok for this fly? Perhaps it would be too bushy. Thanks again for all your videos, very educational and inspirational.
@DavieMcPhail Oh yep cheers, I come from NewZealand, and If we tied that fly we would put a bit of lead on, or if we wanted it to get down, we use beads. Cheers, Tight lines.
Davie is really awesome! This is the first channel i subbed on youtube. And thats a great fly. I should make a few of those to my fly box. Btw, how should i use this fly for maximum effectiveness. I mean, should i use it in slow or fast flowing water, should i try to move it a little bit in the water or just let it flow with the water and not do anything? And sorry for my english, it's not my strongest language.
Hi Davie, again, Got a good mate thats trying to get an instruction vid,of a Goddards Caddis!! Got any help in the back of your mind please! I got tha Diawl Bach under control now, Thanks. Woody
Davie Hi. I have a great deal of success fishing A team of two Diawl Bach ,down to a #12. My problem is,I want to go smaller.ie #14 & #16. The trouble comes when I wrap Peacock Herl for a body. The herl makes it look too bulky on small hooks. Is there anything else I can try for the body? Just come away from the vice having tried just black thread with a fine gold wire rib. It looks nice but as it should be!! I love fishing up in the water & very, very slow (don`t tell anyone) I just want to go slower plus I do not want to to a "washing-line" sort of set up. Any help would be great Davie,& give me a "one-up" down at the FDG. Best Regards, Woody
Hi Woody, All I do is trim the peacock hero once I've ribbed the body as this will help stop you cutting too deep into the body itself..If you don't like the look of this then try and find the very small eyes as you'll find the herl is much shorter and ideal for the small sizes you want to tye and don't worry I'll keep it quiet... All the very best Davie....
Davie, help....no matter what I do the beard always end up off centre, what am I doing wrong. I have tried with the hook upside down and that does not work either.
Hi clive tanton, The easiest way to tye a beard hackle on is to turn the fly upside down like you said but just make sure you keep your fingers tight on the sides of the hook as this will stop the fibres going off to the side but if they do just bring them back round before you trim the waste away and tighten up with thread turns.. Let me know how you get on... All the very best Davie
Hi Davie, Thanks for this video it was really helpful. I'm 13, and I am starting a fly fishing channel for trout. It will include fly tying tutorials, as well as a bit of fishing experience. Could you possibly give some sort of recommendation for my channel, that would be great. Thank you, and I like your videos a lot. Regards, Trout Fishing Weekly
Hi Trout Fishing Weekly, I'm sorry about the delay in getting back to you..Just keep working on your flies and pass on what you have learnt by your experience of using the materials and as well how well they have been fishing and I'm sure you will slowly build up your subscribers and fan base..Being 13 years old then I would try and target others in the same age group and then start sharing your ideas and patterns making sure that your tags are for young tyers and beginners and this will help them find you much easier.. All the very best Davie

TheMopedBomber use it anywhere. It’s a deadly pattern. Try different retrieves or in moving water just let it swing.
