I have just started with fly fishing and watched some of your videos. Thanks to you I will soon start fly tying myself. Looks so harmonic to tie your own flies and gives you something to do in the winter when you cant fly fish. Big creds to you that you take time making videos like this to other people out there to learn.
one of the most underrated pattern. I venture a lot tying different pattern flies just so I can say...I have tied it...but in the water...when you want to catch trout...you gotta have hare's ears nymph...
Just celebrated my 52 year of fly fishing, nymph patterns come and go, not the Gold Rib Hares Ear, caught thousands of fish no this pattern, my favorite way is dead drift with 14ft of leader cast almost straight upstream, requires a sixth sense to detect strikes, but once you get it, deadly!
Davie I watch your videos every day I inspire to be half as good as you one day if your ever in fife would love you to pop into my wee fishery at balmule kind regards sean
Hi Sean, If I ever get the chance I would certainly drop by and say hello. Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad you enjoy the videos... All the very best Davie
Hi Alexandre, I used a Kamasan B175 size 14 which is a heavy hook and strong but you don't have to use this hook as any good wet fly hook will do the same job... All the very best Davie...
I've been watching your videos for the past year now. I've gone to classes from Beginner to Advanced. I'm extremely impressed by your tying abilities. I've tried to use the techniques you utilize and it has made me a much better fly tyer. Thank you. I hope that you continue to show us more of your work. Michael
really cool, I want to hang hares ears of the back of a stimulator or a hopper, do u have any ideas on how i could do this so i could slide the stimulator/ hopper up and down but still have them be able hook a fish without sliding down
Davie, that information is greatly appreciated. I ordered a roll and am going to pick some up at a local industrial supply store later this week! I'm hoping to tie some flies then. Thanks for all of your videos. I just started tying and your videos are so helpful. Thanks again!
I have seen a couple of your videos and tied some of the flies. Thank you so much being such a great teacher, letting anyone else share your knowledge without any attitude. Your flies are just amazing and I really appreciate you helping me getting a better tyer! Tight lines from Hamburg, Germany
Hey Davie, the video almost answered my question. You showed where you were pulling the hair from the hare ;) but the camera was so zoomed in I couldn't tell one end of the mask from the other. The book I have says/ "tail: Hare's poll" Well I wouldn't know a hare's poll from a hare's ear. Though I must be close, it has to be near the ear, the hare has a small face, comparatively speaking. Please excuse my sick humor it is almost 4 am and the wife is having a bad night. I am funny when tired. ATB
thanks for this video Davie,i just started tying last season and i tied crazy amounts of these flies, it was my top fly all year round and it was for my friends who i tied a few for too. we started nicknaming it the wonderfly so i always like to have a healthy supply in my box. i love the lead strip instead of the beads, thanks again, you're videos are the best.
Thanks Davie, changing the thread and rib is a great idea! I like your hare's ear a lot and it caught me many rainbows in Northern California as well as browns in Germany where I live, but I used them all in smaller sizes. So for the big Mayflyes I will try some in size 8 and 10. All the best, Stefan
@@DavieMcPhail heres a link to the only thing I can see it only line basically a hares lug with flash as the tail and hendz scumbag works amazing but in low water size 18/20s works wonders. jp www.pinterest.ca/pin/470274386069276601/
Davie, I've been watching these videos and I find your methods of tying amazing! I had a question though. Where can I find the lead tape that you use on this fly and others I've seen you tie? I cannot seem to find it on the web. Thanks! -Jason
Hey David, I have one question. I want already to start tying nymphs for the time before the big Mayfly hatch in May/June. Do you think the hare's ear might be a good one for those, for example in size 8 or 10? Best Stefan
Hi tony turnbull, I originally bought the flat tinsel from a wholesale company called Veniards but they don't sell it anymore. The nearest to the tinsel is Lagartun so I have attached a link to a company that sells it but if you do a search you may find a shop that sell it closer to you... www.lathkill.com/shop/index.php?categoryID=359 All the very best Davie
Hi Ernie Walker, I use Veniards Prepared Fly Tyers Wax, they are a wholesale company that supply many shops here and abroad so I have attached a link to their website so that you can find a stockist nearest you..I hope this helps you... All the very best Davie www.veniard.com/product3317/section9/
