"Touch of Grey" is about the members of the band getting older or dying. It's a reflection on mortality. It's too bad you never went to a concert, because they were huge fun; everybody had a good time. It wasn't like people who didn't go think: it wasn't an orgy, everybody wasn't stoned out of their minds, etc. People were happy. A lot of fans knew each other. Most of the people were nice. The band didn't always play great, but they're only human - nobody is great all the time. And it was peaceful. There was a good vibration. Practically no fights or violence; you didn't have to be worried about getting hurt. It was a simpler and better time. That's why we miss it.
And isn't it better to be a band that experiments, improvises, and takes lots of chances, than a band that could just successfully play it safe all of the time?

Yes, Jerry on lead guitar is dead, and Brent on the keyboards (as well as several keyboardists before him) have passed on. The rest of the band is still playing shows in various bands. IIRC, this video was directed by the drummer's son.
marksherrick I gotta say Brent was prolly my favorite keyboardist. I loved the energy between him and Garcia especially in a lot of the live performances from 89 (prolly my favorite year for them). Brents vocals were also nice on songs like “blow away” and “we can run”
@@thomashamilton914 Agreed. I recall whole shows Brent saved in the 1980s by snapping the others out of a funk with his tremendous energy! I used to place myself on the floor in front of Brent, or in between Jerry and Brent - I used to love seeing him pop up off his bench like an electric shock just hit him!

Following the Dead remains some of the best memories/non-memories of my life. I always said every person should experience the Dead live, just once. It's not just the actual concert - no. A Dead show starts when you pack the car to drive to the camp ground pre-show. Set up your camp (sometimes it was just sleeping in the car depending on the weather), and get to the venue at noon on the day of the show. Hang out on Shakedown Street until the gates open to the show around 6 pm-ish. Make sure you're inside the gate to see Traffic open for The Dead, or Bob Dylan, or Rusted Root, or The Black Crowes...
"Following the Dead remains some of the best memories/non-memories of my life." Quoted for truth. I toured up and down the East Coast from '83 through '91. The Dead, quite literally, changed me as a person. For the better I might add. There is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert.
Jamel, you’re on your way to becoming a deadhead. Some of the more accessible songs to begin are “Casey Jones,” “ Friend of the Devil,” “Truckin,” “Box of Rain,” and “Ripple.”
I was blessed to have been able to travel with the Grateful Dead in the early 1990 late 1980 it was amazing! I was a carnival employee doing rub on tattoos and the dead hired our tiny company to design temp tattoos and sell them at the show's!

The Grateful Dead were the first band in history that could announce a stadium tour the day before it was supposed to start and still sell out every show within hours. Deadheads actually followed the band all over the country and set up basically little cities outside of each venue where they sold merchandise, food, any kind of drug that you would want to get, all just to fund their trip to the next city. The Dead also encouraged their fans to tape their shows and actually set up part of each venue just for people with recorders, so there are thousands of audios of their concerts out there. I got to see them live once back in 1986, and it was an incredible experience. And it’s funny that you say improvisation, because that was half their set. 10 songs may last three hours LOL but their musicianship was incredible.
They are currently touring as Dead and Company with surviving members with John Mayer taking Garcia’s place,Oteil Burbridge on bass, and Jeff Chaminti on keyboards . All world class musicians. I’m a Deadhead, they did over 30,000 songs and never played one the same way twice. They didn’t use a set list, and all could play like no other! Seeing them live changed my life, man! There are Sooo many great songs. I need you to listen to “Black Peter” (not a dick thing, btw), and “Help on the way”...even if you don’t do a reaction to them, just listen and feel them in your soul!
Sure the solos were different each night, but that's about it. They sounded the same very often. Symphony orchestras never play the same way twice either.
I've been listening to them all my life, and I don't call myself a head yet. When you can hear them tossing rifts back and forth, and KNOW what they're going to play next when somebody else gives you a random show fragment, that's when you KNOW you've made it, your expert. Me, I don't even catch them giving hints to eachother half the time.
Jerry (Guitarist with the Grey Hair) and Brent (the keyboardist) have both passed on. There have also been other members of the band who have passed (oddly, they are all Keyboardists - Pigpen and Keith prior to this and Vince long after this). The other 4 members in this video are alive and well, still making music.
I have listened to that so many times, Love it. I can also tell you that Brent loved that show, I was not there however he told me about it soon after.
the grateful dead had many past members, many have passed on some due to health complications, alcohalism, drug overdoes and auto accidents, for all the years they have performed together no other band in the history of music has put on or sold out more shows then the grateful Dead. do some research. i m sure you will be pleasantly surprised.once a Dead Head always a Dead Head. RIP but their music will always live on
I saw the video, and before I clicked, I thought, "well... this should be interesting" It did not disappoint. Careful, Jamal. The Dead is a rabbit hole from which you may never return, if you choose to follow it.
You actually can still see them live. Although I'm not a fan of John Mayer, he's doing a phenomenal job filling the Jerry guitar role, and Oteil is a pretty respectable bass player. It's as close as you can get these days....or, um, a Darkstar Orchestra show. That's pretty legit too.
I wish you could have experienced a show. The audience alone was a treasure. The Dead were masters of crowd emotion. They didn't just conduct music. They conducted the emotions of 1000s of people. It was an amazing thing to experience.
This was one of my favorite videos when I was a little kid. This and “Sledgehammer” by Peter Gabriel. I just loved those weird videos when I was 5 years old or so. Of course, after that it was “Pour Some Sugar on Me” by Def Leppard, and that’s probably because of the way I saw the older girls start dancing when it came on. At any rate, great stuff! I love these trips down memory lane, and your reactions. Keep em coming!!
Live Dead is a whole new world, new dimensions - I think you know by now but you can watch live Concerts and you'll be blown away by the improv and song evolutions
Guy, it’s the studio version of the song with video recorded at a live show... you have to check out "eyes of the world" with Branford Marsalis from the “without a net" album. That’s a live recording and Branford brings it
I can still remember getting home from scholl and putting on MTV, Jerry had passed away and as a tribute they played the only video they had. I knew the world had lost a great and beautiful soul that day, been a fan ever since
They still have a huge following. My 29 year old son loves them., They are a FEEEEL GOOD band! I think you should always watch a concert from the 70s to listen to a song whenever you can. This is a piece of history right here,
you are my new favorite thing on youtube! I came across your Jethro Tull reaction, then Zappa, Neil Young, and now GD, I'm loving your openminded approach and willingness with some of those bands, for they are not always understood or liked, and you are embracing something new! I love it! About half the Grateful Dead is dead and half are still performing. This band has inspired many bands to cover their tunes, so the music lives on, in sometimes very new and different forms, as music can always evolve, but it still lives on. Thanks for keeping it real!
As you can see in the background, their logo is many variations of a skeleton. (Goes with dead. ) Since the song deals with aging, having them show up as skeletons plays along with the theme.
I had the pleasure of being a follower of the Grateful Dead back in the day...I got to see them live at least five times during a summer...it was amazing.
Jerry Garcia was such an amazing musician! The Grateful Dead has so many different sounds... This is a great one though! (Edit: The skeleton actually has a name, it's Rosie.
So, the Grateful Dead live was quite an experience. Their core fans loved this group like no other. In big arenas where normally that have pretty tight security, Dead fans couldn't be controlled. Huge dance party. One of the best live bands ever.
This was a spoof of videos. They were all all alive then....seeing them in PERSON, LIVE, was special. This was something special, too. We had tears in our eyes even before Jerry passed. We cared! We worried. Then, he died. Our hearts broke.
Hey, man. I've been having a rough time for a few years. Medical. Anyway, seeing you light up a little bit combined with this tune made me feel a little better. I've got happy tears. Hope you and yours stay safe. Thanks for this channel. Sincerely.
Big Jay oh damn, what song was that line from? Something by Don Henley wasn't it? Boys of Summer? That brings back memories. For a moment I thought you were referring to that country song Old Hippie by the Bellamy Brothers, but that's a different one.
Got dragged (I wasn't a fan) to a Dead concert by a co-worker. Had a great time - but it was a little weird that people were still dancing on the stairways between songs. I remember the silhouettes from across the arena in the doorways at the top of the stairs. Or maybe it was the acid he gave me before the show.
You can see Dead & Company live, which is only Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart with others filling in for other members like John Mayer and others. Another good one you may like is Hell in A Bucket.
This is not "live". This is lip-syncing over the album version with some crowd noise added. So you've heard the album version and seen the official video, but still haven't heard them actually play the song in concert.
Some of the best, most incredible moments in my life were at Dead shows. Their music is amazing and will always be a part of my life. I will survive, we deadheads will survive. Love your reactions bro.
LOL!! Too funny! You’re watching the made for MTV video which is the same version of the song you already enjoyed. You tube has plenty of excellent live GD videos. I suggest 12/31/87 NewYears. Don’t remember if there’s a Touch of Grey. But....it was a nationally broadcast show and shows plenty of crowd interaction. I think you’d dig it. Keep us posted friend! Just watched your reaction and too funny my man. Too funny. I was there too. They actually used skeletons on strings like puppets. This was the 80s. A very popular video it was. it took hours. It was made at Laguna Seca in Monterrey CA 5/9/87 after their sat daytime show. Everyone got invited back for the making of it at night. And did one more show the next day. GD history lesson. Keep up the good work!
I’m sure someone else has told you but Jerry is gone and so is Brent from that grouping. Live is the only way when listening to the Dead. Best times of my life. Thanks for this!!
Jamel The magic lies in the Live Shows. THEY HAVE A SONG FOR EVERY EMOTION and a lyric that fits every notion that keeps you in foward motion. WE'RE JERRYS KIDS. Three words: Box Of Rain. No live video (song was not always performed live), but very emotional lyrics...one of only TWO Dead songs to ever make me cry.
This is so awesome! This song got me through some pretty hard times before. It makes me think of a dear friend who passed away too. It's certainly a reflection of our own mortality, indeed, but it also brings great joy👍
Phil Lesh, The Grateful Dead's bassist, has a restaurant/bar/small concert venue in San Rafael (Marin County, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco). The name of the place is Terrapin Crossroads. Their house band is a group called Midnight North. The lead singer of the group, Grahame Lesh, is Phil Lesh's son. I went to a concert of theirs a couple years back at Terrapin Crossroads with some friends. We had dinner there first (the restaurant is *seriously* good!) and then went to the concert. Midnight North played two sets. The first set was their own original music. The second set was a tribute to CSN (Crosby, Stills & Nash). Phil Lesh was there, and he got up on stage and played with the band during the second set. It was an *amazing* evening! If you get a chance to either check out the place, or the band, or both (once we are able to attend live music events and go out to restaurants again, that is), I would totally recommend! This is my favorite Midnight North song... th-cam.com/video/DKDHAY-TyC4/w-d-xo.html
Touch of Gray was The Grateful Dead's first music video. The song was recrded live at a concert in The Bay Area. At the end of the concert, the audience was asked to step outside the venue while they set-up for filming the video. When everything was ready, the entire audience came back in and had a real, natural reaction to what they were treated to. They started performing the song at concerts in 1982, but did not record it in a studio until 1987. (This is the way they did their songs: write them, put them in their concerts, and then studio recording whenever they got around to it. Performing was their # 1 priority. They hold the offical world record for most live performances by one rock group. As for the song itself: a couple of word substitutions will help you understand its meaning. "Every silver lining has its touch of grey". Substitute life for silver lining and problems for touch of grey. This was a song about getting past life's difficulties. There are one or two real world crisis in there. A dairy region was found to have a petroleum product contamination in their cows' milk sometime during the 1970s. "Cows are giving kerosene". So, no matter how bleak things look, we WILL come out on the other side. "I (We) WILL survive". A great song with a greater message!

Sure the solos were different each night, but that's about it. They sounded the same very often. Symphony orchestras never play the same way twice either.
they used set lists. and they did know what they were going to play any given night.
Not to mention back in the 70’s they would perform for 4-5 hours/show! They would take an 8 minute song and stretch it out to 30....
React to Althea, you'll be glad you did.
YES!!!! The one from Go To Nassau is $$$$
I told you! I was feeling Lost!
I wish I could like a comment twice
Or a West LA Fadeaway, Estimated Prophet, Help/Slip, The Music Never Stopped
@@phishjones hell yeah that's my favorite one
Check out the Eyes Of The World with Branford Marsalis on Sax!
Yes!!!! Without a Net version!!!
I have listened to that so many times, Love it. I can also tell you that Brent loved that show, I was not there however he told me about it soon after.
This really shoukd happen. Plus theres concert footage dubbed with the soundboard mix. Please!!!!
Love Without a Net! Franklin's tower, even the victim or the crime is awesome.
the grateful dead had many past members, many have passed on some due to health complications, alcohalism, drug overdoes and auto accidents, for all the years they have performed together no other band in the history of music has put on or sold out more shows then the grateful Dead. do some research. i m sure you will be pleasantly surprised.once a Dead Head always a Dead Head. RIP but their music will always live on
I saw the video, and before I clicked, I thought, "well... this should be interesting"
It did not disappoint.
Careful, Jamal. The Dead is a rabbit hole from which you may never return, if you choose to follow it.
Get on the bus!
Look into a band, called The Grateful Shred... Pretty decent sound..
JRAD
I second, third, and fourth JRAD
JRAD without a doubt
JRAD
So glad I got to see them several times before Jerry died. Best shows of my life.
Sugar Magnolia is my fav Dead song, that would be a good one to do.
Sugar mag from the Europe 72 album is straight fire. That whole album. Nasty Tennessee Jed too.
whit kirtley and jack straw. And ramble on rose. And that filthy CHINA CAT!!!
Marshall Tucker Band- Can’t you see
The Band- The weight
Greatful Dead- Ripple
Love the Vidoes! Keep em coming
I would recommend live performances to get a feel for the band.
the crowd and the energy they provide is a big part of what the Dead were all about.
Live Dead is a whole new world, new dimensions - I think you know by now but you can watch live Concerts and you'll be blown away by the improv and song evolutions
Guy, it’s the studio version of the song with video recorded at a live show... you have to check out "eyes of the world" with Branford Marsalis from the “without a net"
album. That’s a live recording and Branford brings it
Yes yes yes
Live. Grateful Dead. Allman Brothers. Always live
I love this track, but "Althea" and "The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)" still take the cake for me.
The Golden Road is such a fun song!
yes yes yes... ALTHEA!
What's your favorite Althea, Mark? Mine is 3/14/81.
Yesssss to Althea, my favorite of theirs!
OT1 is one of my faves, often lurking in other songs (teaser) and sometimes emerging, so much power in it, yea its my jam
I can still remember getting home from scholl and putting on MTV, Jerry had passed away and as a tribute they played the only video they had. I knew the world had lost a great and beautiful soul that day, been a fan ever since
Oh Dude, you MUST hear Terrapin Station or my favorite Scarlet Begonia or Deal- smokig hot live version!
They still have a huge following. My 29 year old son loves them., They are a FEEEEL GOOD band! I think you should always watch a concert from the 70s to listen to a song whenever you can. This is a piece of history right here,
My teenage kids are Deadheads.... the music lives on✌️❤️💀
Thank you Jamal for this reaction! Best part of my day. "We will survive!"
you are my new favorite thing on youtube!
Don't worry about talking over the video, a honest reaction I think is the best.
This was a spoof of videos. They were all all alive then....seeing them in PERSON, LIVE, was special. This was something special, too. We had tears in our eyes even before Jerry passed. We cared! We worried. Then, he died. Our hearts broke.
tell the corona virus "we will get by we will survive"
Stay golden ponyboy.
Jeff Holleger gold, not “golden”.
Ponyboy Curtis coronavirus, not “corona virus”.
secret germs okay grandmaster grammar, I haven’t seen that movie in almost 15 years.
Jeff Holleger if you don’t want to be corrected on your mistakes, then don’t make any.
The Grateful Dead was and always will be about Jerry Garcia. Jerry passed away in 97..... Rip Jerry But “the dead” live on... we will get by
Probably one of the most famous Ben and Jerry's flavors pays homage to the lead singer Jerry Garcia. "CHERRY GARCIA"
Black cherry for when he passed away.
Seeing you grooving along and singing the words was beautiful. ✌🏼😊💃🎶🕺
Hehe. A little something for “Jerry’s Kids” huh? Well done.
Jesus! Mr. Jamal. I LOVE your reactions. I appreciate your openness, Humor, and reactions! Thank you! 🤗👻
Hey, man. I've been having a rough time for a few years. Medical. Anyway, seeing you light up a little bit combined with this tune made me feel a little better. I've got happy tears. Hope you and yours stay safe. Thanks for this channel. Sincerely.
Deal live ‘78 Egypt!! Can’t wait to see more!! Dead has more live shows than any other band. Literally
Jerry 'Cherry' Garcia 'Ben & Jerrys'
"I saw a 'Dead Head' sticker on a Cadillac..."
Big Jay oh damn, what song was that line from? Something by Don Henley wasn't it? Boys of Summer? That brings back memories.
For a moment I thought you were referring to that country song Old Hippie by the Bellamy Brothers, but that's a different one.
@@BC25citizen The Boys of Summer by Don Henley
Can't go back you can never go back....
Morning dew is one of my favorites of theirs. Live in '72 from the lyceum in London is a great version.
Maybe both?
Both
Both, yep, always loved the silhouettes and shadows
You can see Dead & Company live, which is only Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart with others filling in for other members like John Mayer and others. Another good one you may like is Hell in A Bucket.
Right now.U S Blues would be a perfect GD song to react to.
Or Throwing Stones
Or Ramble on rose Live
A true pure American band that mixed rock, blues, bluegrass, pop and country.
This is not "live". This is lip-syncing over the album version with some crowd noise added. So you've heard the album version and seen the official video, but still haven't heard them actually play the song in concert.
I thought it sounded a little too clean.
Some of the best, most incredible moments in my life were at Dead shows. Their music is amazing and will always be a part of my life. I will survive, we deadheads will survive. Love your reactions bro.
The "Did I just see what I thought I saw?" moment. I still think you should try the Cherry Garcia flavored ice cream from Ben and Jerry's.
LOL!!
Get a copy of "THE GRATEFUL DEAD MOVIE" and watch the whole thing, nonstop.
THE GRATEFUL DEAD has the power ro change the WORLD.
Touch Heads lol
This song brought a slough of Jimmy Buffet fans to the sjows wearing the hawaiian shirts.
Jerry Garcia is one of best guitar players ever lived.
Theres Dead & Co shows coming Jamel. GO MAN
GO TO A SHOW. NOT PHISH
DEAD & CO. ITS NOT the same as it used to be in 80s and 90s but they didnt fold and even though the obvious choice for the Jerry Slot was overlooked or glhe declined we all know who sounds just like Jerry. Oh well Trey from Phish hes def. Family but hes Obi Wan to the Wooks. I dont get it. I dont think anybody. DEAD FAM IS LIFE. PHISH FANS THEY DONT HAVE THE INFRASTRUCTURE TO FOLLOW THE TOUR..WEEKEND PRETEND TIME IM SURE SOME WEALTHY DADS PAID FOR PRE COLLEGE PHISH TOUR AS A RITE OF PASSAGE INTO BLOWN VW HEADS AND WARM ZIMA'S.
WHERE YA LIVE JAMEL ILL TAKE YA TO A SHOW MAN.
AMAZING... This Band Of Bones effect is great... My favorite song by them! LOVE LOVE LOVE it....
That face at 2:00 is priceless! Love this my friend. Find you some LIVE Dead. Turn this mole hill into a mountain.
Three words:
Box
Of
Rain.
No live video (song was not always performed live), but very emotional lyrics...one of only TWO Dead songs to ever make me cry.
Would love to see a reaction to anything from the Talking Heads. Shoulders be boppin from nearly every song on Remain in Light
When I first discovered MTV as a kid in the late 80s/early 90s this was the first video I ever saw and it always cracked me up watching it.
That’s the actual Music Video from the 80’s when the song was released, not a complete live version even though there are live clips
This is so awesome!
This song got me through some pretty hard times before. It makes me think of a dear friend who passed away too. It's certainly a reflection of our own mortality, indeed, but it also brings great joy👍
Such a smooth jam, groovin' and movin"! Probably should follow this up with Friend of the Devil.
Still here for Zappa!
And this was their cover of CSN's "Helplessly Hoping" from the night I was there... th-cam.com/video/Fdnf2ixxpg8/w-d-xo.html
Musicians like "The Grateful Dead" never really die. They just retire to the oldies radio stations and outlive us all.
I'm glad that you found this man, this song is very applicable to everybody. The video makes it that much better. Thanks man 🤙🤙
Dude! The look on your face when you came to the realization.... Priceless.
The lead singer and keyboard player passed away. The skeletons are just a joke for the video
Several "keyboard" players, in fact
Aaron Rumack every keyboard player... in fact
I was only speaking about Brent because he was in the video, no disrespect to our other fallen brothers
Fred Scott no not yet my friend
Brother Bruce is still alive
Jerry wasn't the lead singer. He was one of the lead singers. From 80s on they pretty much always went Jerry song- Bobby song- Jerry- Bobby
If you haven't already done so, would love to see your reaction to Land Of Confusion by Genesis.
Love your comments! It is always good to hear what others think of the Dead. Got engaged at a show on April Fools Day, they are a huge part of my life.
Legend has it, that there was enough LSD there to make the whole USA trip........
We could all use a good trip right now!?
People are still dropping stuff they made
Theres still enough love going around to dose the whole usa XD should have seen boulder Colorado last year when dead and co played practically the whole town was dosed
They have been jamming since 1965. They are known all over the world. You either dig them or you don't. I love the Dead.
