So, I'm in a screenwriting class, and the professor used to write freelance for star trek, and he says that if you compare your idea to something else, a producer is more likely to pick it up, but you have to specify what makes it different from the original show, too. So what I'm getting at is "American idol, but they're in costumes the whole time" is actually something a producer would eat up.
I guess the idea to the producer is, "well that was successful, so an idea that is related to this successful thing is more reliable than a completely new idea"
@@esquared722 which, that's actually just a psychological idea so I assume it doesn't work out realistically for most movies unless the audience is able to relate those concepts
We call them "comps" and it's a way to make sure your idea will find an audience, since the comparable has been a success, but also with a fresh spin. Most creativity is combining known concepts in a new way !
the masked singer is actually a reboot of “the king of masked singer”, a korean singing competition. in the korean version, the contestants can be really famous or pretty unpopular. the point of the show is to display that popularity ≠ quality. the american version kinda bastardized the concept imo
Same with I can see your voice, the Korean version is actually really fun to watch, but the American... everything is just so over the top, it feels like it's parodying the actual show
I think it got really popular with American audiences once Ryan Reynolds appeared as a guest star to promote Deadpool and the clip went viral on TH-cam, and then Hollywood got dollar signs in their eyes
As a funeral director, i often have to help people identify what assets/liabilities people need to wrap up soon after someone dies. Something i learned pretty recently is that most cable companies want an official copy of someone’s death certificate before they allow you to cancel their cable subscription.
that's kinda shitty from a purely moral standpoint, like who the hell is faking their death to cancel a subscription service??? if anything that would be a negative reflection of their company if they think someone would seriously consider that
The entitlement and violation of that is disgusting. The deceased persons' cause of death and all the medical conditions they had that contributed to their cause of death is on their death certificate.
@@avamasquerade i’ve started recommending people get a “fact of death” death certificate - one without cause(s) of death - for those kinds of places instead of giving them an “extended fact of death” - ones with cause(s) of death listed.
The idea of Ken Jeong telling really bad jokes on a set with no audience members and contestants standing around in awkward silence is hilarious to me.

I would compare it more to phones. Like how most people had landlines and cell phones in it's infancy stage that charged by the minute. You could even lease phones from your provider (my great grandma had a rental rotary phone she was paying for all the way up to her passing in 2005.) Now you can get a plan of unlimited talk, text and internet for $50/mo. Just like cable, landlines aren't really needed, unless you're using it for a business
Actually the masked singer isn't a rip off of American Idol. It's a rip off of a korean show... called the masked singer. And that's creativity at its peak right there. Hi! Some edits: 1. I am aware that it’s licensed so not technically a “rip off”, however I think everyone who’s seen the original from Korea can agree that its a lot better than whatever the hell America did to it 2. Idk why people see “Korean” and immediately think kpop, but a lot of the people on the show aren’t idols at all! Also, let’s not bash an entire genre of music especially if you’re not really familiarized with it! 3. Please keep telling me about how this show is even worse in your country I love it haha
And they are recreating all of these in Europe... personally I think masked singer (in France at least) is extremely cringey, lots of silly talking and barely any singing, there's more and more ad breaks
I quit Spectrum about 10 years ago. When I did, it was years after my contract expired. They tried REALLY hard to sell me more services before they'd let me cancel. I finally just lied and told them "I'm dying of cancer. I'll be dead in 3 months. I have no reason to keep paying for this. I'm going into hospice tomorrow." The lady actually had the audacity to ask me "Is there anyone else in your family I can talk to about getting cable?"
My favourite genre of cable tv is "women married to somewhat succesful men": Hockey Wives, Baller Wives, Baseball Wives, Mob Wives, Married to Medicine, Second Wives Club, The Real Housewives of (insert location here), and so on and so forth
masked singer is based off a korean show which is designed to highlight great vocalists in unappreciated/unpopular kpop groups which makes the format make a lot more sense rather than just random celebrities.
It’s somewhat of a competition show so although yes, they are trying to guess who the singer is, the main point of the Korean show is the competitive part and the singers showing how good they are before revealing their identity. It’s quite funny watching the difference between the original and spin-offs in the us and uk because damn do they turn the wackiness up to ten.
@@ongakira In South Korea, kpop group members cannot be said to be "singers", they are idols who sing. In the past, for the majority of South Korean people, an idol singer was not a real singer, idol vocal abilities were questioned, and not a few thought idols could not sing. If there are idols who have good vocal skills they understand it's all because of the needs of the group, they know there are at least one or two people who can sing well, and the rest are just beautiful people dancing. That's why Masked Singers are very important for idols back then, even in the early episodes many underestimate idols, if someone has a good voice they will guess that the person is an actor or comedian and not an idol. Solji EXID's victory in masked singer was like a hard blow to South Korean viewers because they didn't expect that she's an idol in a group with sexy concept. Unless they are soloist idols, then their singing skills are not in question.

Just hearing “Spectrum” sent me into fight or flight mode. They are the only internet provider in my rural area and they know it. They charge insane amounts for WiFi and randomly send mystery charges to my card and overdraw my bank account, which then causes the bank to charge me massive overdraft fees. When I call to contest charges I’m on hold a few hours and get transferred an average of 4 times. No one ever knows what’s going on when you call. They deactivated my WiFi for no reason on accident and I spent 4 hours on the phone until 2am and got transferred 6 times and nobody could figure it out. When I finally got to the last person they figured out that the person three transfers ago put the issue into the computer wrong and listed it as an issue a tech would need to come to my house to fix. Unfortunately only she could fix it and their department closed while I was winding through the next few transfers. I had to call the next day and do the whole thing over again. They promised they wouldn’t charge me for this mistake. They charged me $150 dollars the next day and overdrew my bank account for the millionth time. EDIT: THEY DID IT AGAIN TODAY. WHAT ARE YOU CHARGING ME FOR I HAVE DONE NOTHING AHHHHHH

The first part is even funnier when you realize that both the Masked Singer and I Can See Your Voice are directly taken from Korean shows of the same name and concept that have been on for years. Seriously, they literally changed nothing, not even the titles.
And the thing is, the originals are actually good shows!! Because they invite actual singers to be the performers and you have to guess their identity based on their singing and you get to actually objectively judge their abilities because you don't know their identity or if they're some superstar or an idol or whatever and that's pretty cool!!

Also I feel like it makes more sense in korea since idol culture is bigger over there but in America I feel like most people won’t know the individual singers as much and won’t be as invested in the show bc the audience doesn’t know who will show up... whereas in Korea they might not know the singer but might have heard of their group (if they are part of one of course)

This video is really making it clear to me why my dad got rid of our cable when I was in preschool and never got it back since. Who in their right mind would pay that much money to watch an episode of a show broken up by obnoxious ads every five minutes making the action of watching one episode a (at least) hour process.
Pretty sure the standard is about 20 minutes of content with 10 minutes of ads, hence the 30 minute time slots. That said I haven't watched cable in at least a decade so maybe it has actually gotten that bad
I remember our family recording every single episode we wanted to watch, and then watching them like an hour later so we could skip all the ads. My sister and I also used to just pause at every commercial, wait until when we thought they were over, and fast forward back to the show. Despite being too young to understand what advertisements even were, we would still rather stare at a paused screen for ten minutes than watch the ads.
Because it sounds like a lot to learn. I've never had streaming, so it sounds like I'll have to learn which service has which shows. So, I'm always opening and closing apps to change programs? And older people with cable dont even know what a smart TV is, or how a TV connects to the Internet. I have an XBOX hooked up to watch MLB games, but that is the most useless, user hating controller imaginable. Plus, my cable company is also my internet provider. So to get streaming, I have to cancel cable, sign up for new internet, and sign up for and learn to use 3 different streaming services. It sounds so overwhelming and inconvenient that I just keep paying the extra money.
I bought a tv antenna that that works pretty well for getting basic channels, that I use once a year to watch the thanksgiving day parade so I can talk about it with my Grandmom
ive never had cable. when i was like 15, we got it in the living room bc internet was cheaper if you got the package deal (for about a year at least), but i wasnt allowed in there while my dad was home bc hes a dick. i watched it occasionally while he was on work trips and it was so lackluster. its so hard to figure out, theres wayyyy too many channels (i wish you could remove them from the menu at least), there was never anything on *somehow*, and im convinced all the channels fkn sync their ads. the ad times have gotten so much longer too. i watch regular tv with an antenna when im at my moms bc the only internet companies where she lives are scams (above average prices for internet that takes 20 minutes to load a 5 minute video on a good day). we watch Laff, which is basically just that 70s show, how i met your mother, according to jim, and a couple other old reruns in between. we just have netflix and youtube premium, so when she comes to pick me up (which is like every 2 days lmao) we download a bunch of stuff on both. i have limited data so i use that for social media every now and again, but tbh its a nice break. so even without internet, cable still loses lmao. they can get decent cable, but no one around there really has it bc its easier to do it this way
Honestly, that’s wholesome af and reminds me of growing up in the 90s..I always new what time it was when the evening new turned into Jeopardy or when they did the powerball.
So I watch criminal minds and in its defense it plays with formats between kidnapping and murder (I’m not going to list more) and some episodes are focused on finding the culprit, some focus on the team and culprit equally, and some are like a high steaks interview with them. They do a good job of fleshing out characters and make them feel real.

The TV station law thing is BS too. I'm a law student and we just read that case on Free Speech. The cable companies argued that the government infringed their free speech by making them host broadcast stations for free. The government was concern that broadcast (which is free) would become inaccessible since advertisers were leaving broadcast channels. In the interest of providing free public interest channels, Congress forced cable to host the broadcast channels. They whined about it as taking up a channel spot that could have hosted a cable channel. So it doesn't actually cost them money, it just takes up one of their channels which now they can't use to make money.
The American Masked Singer is so weird. The Korean version usually has actual singers and you're supposed to guess which one it is by just the voice. The American one weirdly just takes anyone in existence and puts a mask on them and forces them to sing seemingly at gunpoint.
Honestly what I liked about the Korean version was that it gave artists a platform and recognition. For example thanks to Jihyo going on the show she became trending on Naver and helped break the narrative that Twice was just a group of “bad singers”.
It’s not anyone. Celebrities choose to be on the show. And that’s what makes the US one fun. Celebrities like Wayne Brady who aren’t fully known for singing get recognized. It’s more open.
House Hunters hits different and I’m black, I watched an episode with my sisters and we made a story about the rancher dude who wanted +300 acres was a drug smuggler who hid the drugs in cows
Further adding to how fake "I Can See Your Voice" is, the woman in a US Air Force uniform said she was "Sergeant First Class" which is the E-7 rank in the Army, not the Air Force. In the Air Force the E-7 rank is Master Sergeant. I was in the Air Force.
Ironic that in 2024, most streaming services have increased their prices significantly, most are still not profitable, and all of them are putting ads into the base tier level of subscription.
The whole genre of crime shows actually caused a mega problem for forensics. When shows like NCIS and Law and Order became super popular, people were being called up for Jury Duty and legitimately using what they had watched on TV as reasons for deciding whether or not someone was guilty. It's super interesting! Like, collecting DNA and examining it can be super long process but because the shows made it look like such a quick turn around, the juridical system had a mega problem with people demanding particular types of evidence...because they'd seen it on tv.
I moved into my current home in June 2020, so Spectrum wouldn't send someone out to hookup our modem for us. But don't worry, we still had to pay them $50 TO INSTALL IT OURSELVES
So don’t pay like what???? I don’t get how you don’t call them and tell them they are retarded if they think you are paying that. Like there is ZEROOOOOO chance I would ever pay for something I don’t want unless it’s literally illegal to not and even then I’ll do anything in my power to avoid it
You need to call Spectrum and ask for the Retention Dept as your house already being wired for their service is the only way you can do the self install which is just plugging in the cables which is ~$9.99 if you weren't given the kit.
Oh my god yes! That’s exactly how it works.. every time you pitch an idea you gotta be like “its like *movie title* meets *movie title*”

the masked singer is actually a reboot of “the king of masked singer”, a korean singing competition. in the korean version, the contestants can be really famous or pretty unpopular. the point of the show is to display that popularity ≠ quality. the american version kinda bastardized the concept imo

As a funeral director, i often have to help people identify what assets/liabilities people need to wrap up soon after someone dies. Something i learned pretty recently is that most cable companies want an official copy of someone’s death certificate before they allow you to cancel their cable subscription.
"Well, *we* think you aren't dead, so you have to keep paying us. (^.^)"

Actually the masked singer isn't a rip off of American Idol.
It's a rip off of a korean show... called the masked singer.
And that's creativity at its peak right there.
Hi! Some edits:
1. I am aware that it’s licensed so not technically a “rip off”, however I think everyone who’s seen the original from Korea can agree that its a lot better than whatever the hell America did to it
2. Idk why people see “Korean” and immediately think kpop, but a lot of the people on the show aren’t idols at all! Also, let’s not bash an entire genre of music especially if you’re not really familiarized with it!
3. Please keep telling me about how this show is even worse in your country I love it haha
And they are recreating all of these in Europe... personally I think masked singer (in France at least) is extremely cringey, lots of silly talking and barely any singing, there's more and more ad breaks
they probably bought the rights for it

masked singer is based off a korean show which is designed to highlight great vocalists in unappreciated/unpopular kpop groups which makes the format make a lot more sense rather than just random celebrities.
why would it make more sense ? the whole point of the show is to guess who it is it doesn’t matter like 😭😭😭
It’s somewhat of a competition show so although yes, they are trying to guess who the singer is, the main point of the Korean show is the competitive part and the singers showing how good they are before revealing their identity. It’s quite funny watching the difference between the original and spin-offs in the us and uk because damn do they turn the wackiness up to ten.
One of my favorite singers from my favorite band was on that show, and it was amazing
Came here to say this too!
