"KNEEL BEFORE YOUR GOD, BABYLON!!" Gotta hand it to Colbert. He's not afraid one bit of slamming somebody to their face. Makes me excited to see what he does with the Late Show.
Small potatoes, my friend! If you haven't already seen it, look up a video of Colbert hosting the White House Correspondents Dinner in 2006... right smack in the middle of the second Dubya term! Somehow, they took his act at face value and invited him to host... which they regret almost immediately for the next 25 minutes. Great stuff!

forbes646 Babylon was a nation in the Middle East a few thousand years ago and it took Israel into captivity back then for awhile. It was known by the Israelites and the Old Testament as a godless, sinful nation full of idol-worship, so Stephen was basically jokingly referring to the Hollywood audience as like a modern-day Babylon and calling the award a golden idol.
Colbert is actually a really good actor. He plays such a caricature with believable conviction and frankly (in my humble opinion) is the best satirist of the 21st century.
He was so good at playing the over-the-top conservative, it took me quite a while to realize he wasn't actually a conservative. I thought he was just taking it to 11 for comedic purposes.
@@eutropius2699 Yeah, he's definitely not a conservative. He's spoken many times about how hard it was to stay "in character" during certain events. The Late Show if very left-leaning.
Fox News is widely considered to be a propaganda for "conservative" causes, rather than an objective news outlet. Leaked internal memos have confirmed this to be intentional, but some viewers are still insanely loyal.
You know when Jeffery Tambor and John Lithgow are dying of laughter that you are crushing it. The others they cut to are just so deer in the headlights.
Every once in a while I need to go back and watch clips of what may be my favorite character from the 2000s, Stephen Colbert. Murtsman1 People everywhere are sinful. Hollywood just tends to shine the spotlight a little brighter on that fact, and it's more evident/noticeable -- sadly.
Sai Namuduri Cool bro. I didn't hear anything about this, so I just watch the funny videos of people being stupid. I don't know about that part about him wanting someone to rape someone else, though. Sai Namuduri Ok, man. Just chill out. I just said he's funny. You don't have to watch it, and the millions of people who watch it aren't racist either.
They're both legends. I remember back when The Daily Show was just a funny take on the news and Stewart and Colbert were just a couple of comedians. It's amazing to see how far these two men and their respective shows have come over the last decade.
I love how they are just in complete control of that crowd. Hundreds of professional actors and comedians, totally captivated, and Stewart and Colbert make it look so damn easy. That's the difference between professionals and masters right there.
"The results are often dramatic and always unexpected, we're here to honor achievement in that category." "By giving you a golden idol to worship, kneel before your god Babylon!" "This is... uh... this is about the Manilow thing..." "I lost to Barry Manilow!"
“I lost to BARRY MANILO!!!” I felt that. Back in high school my dance troupe did one of our concerts and 80% of the numbers must have been Barry Manilo. Someone made a mock program for the show and called it The Barry Manilo Review. And yes, Copa cabana was in the lineup. It was the funniest thing ever! I feel your pain Steven!
Wow, I could never understand human history because I'm not a history major. Jokes about the human race go completely over my head because I do not study previous events in the timeline of human life on earth. It's like I've never even heard of Babylon, one of the most famous empires in human history. Please, tell me more of your sophisticated ways!
For those who are, for whatever reason, lacking in the understanding of satire, the reason this REALLY works is that Colbert built up the tension with the right-wing psychobabble you often hear on AM radio concerning Hollywood liberalism. That tension comes crashing down with the fervent statement I LOST TO BARRY MANILOW! THAT'S why this bit works. It reminds you that everyone, even Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity--or, for the sake of political balance, Randy Rhodes and Nike Malloy--are just performers looking for an award to feel validated. This is intelligent satire, and it's unfortunately lost on a few generations of Americans dummied down by the very thing these two are presenting awards for: Reality TV.
Absolutely true, and what sells it is both the writing and their performance. I find Stewart's discomfort after declaiming, "Award show banter is not pablum!" nearly as funny as Colbert's anguish, though the later gets punched up by the shots of people in the audience who are just losing it.
***** The great thing about it is that there's room both for what we were saying to each other and for ... whatever it is you do. (I assume it involves cheese, possibly from a can.)
Tell it to your leaders. Even the Republicans that ran the country at the time thought Colbert was an actual conservative, which is scary considering those guys have the launch codes and absolute power. Couldn't stop laughing at the outcome of that White House Correspondents' Dinner in '06. Colbert roasted Dubya like a pig on a spit. It looked like he was going to have an aneurysm.
***** It's called life, cupcake. People don't always get along. Deal with it. Anyways, thanks for wishing me, an awful and hateful person, a good day, you backwards conservative.

The truths you cling to are based on your own personal point of view. Other's points of view may be similar, or very greatly. Therefore truth is relative to the beholder.
The Daily Show followed by the Colbert Report was the greatest hour of tv for a long time. Politicians were literally afraid to do their shows. Nancy Pelosi forbid democrats from going on for over two years, and republicans just refused for the most part. I miss the Colbert Report so much.
I'll admit... I paused at every frame of the audience's reaction, because I was so amazed that, in every single shot, every person in it had a smile on their face. There's not many comedic moments that are capable of pulling that off.
I wonder how long it will take for history to look back at these two and now, John Oliver, to sincerely thank them for just opening our eyes and telling the truth about the state of affairs through comedy.
