It drew the audience in with genuine suspense. The ability to pull off or appreciate sophisticated humor is rare and belies great intelligence, IMO.
Did anyone notice that when he was about to introduce Felicity Huffman as a presenter his joke was about how Golden Globes can't be bought officially? then years later Felicity Huffman's admission scandal came out hahaha

Ive travelled a bit over the years in the USA and worked with a few Americans here in Australia and one thing ive learned about them is that generally unless you whack them in the face with a joke they wont get it Aussie and British humour is so much better
