I didn't discover that commentary until after TH-cam had truly taken off as a media platform, plus I was in middle school when 9/11 happened. I do remember, however, feeling incredibly unsettled and scared that we (i.e. Southern California) would be "next" on the terrorists' hitlist, even as a child. Years later, I finally happened upon the post-9/11 segment where Jon addressed the country in one of the most raw, heart-felt monologues I had seen. I felt every word of it then, and still do even now. I felt the same when I watched his fiery address to Congress demanding that they do their part to honor the surviving 9/11 first responders, when nobody else in power seemed to give a damn. That speech by Jon may have saved my life. I went from Michigan to NYC when this happened, hoping my Navy training in firefighting and first aid might be of use. It wasn't by the time I got there and managed to get into ground zero. But I had 2 weeks' vacation, and I decided I could still schlep food and drinks and help move some rubble. But one day, helping two fire fighters, I saw something I still hate to think about - I could not take it. I left, knowing I might not get back in, got a cheap hotel room and some beer. I think I was on the verge of PTSD. I had never seen The Daily Show, but I had heard it was funny, and I saw it on the cable guide, and tuned in to see Jon talking about people from all over, with buckets, rebuilding, and I realized that he, a New Yorker, was talking about me. He made me realize that my tiny contribution mattered - so I went back. If I had not, I don't think I could have looked at myself in the mirror. I swore an oath in 1981, if I had left, I would have violated that oath, and Jon gave me the strength to keep it.

Man this makes me miss them all together, as a team. Absolutely brilliant together. I remember the post 9/11 show. That was a terrible time in NY, & the country. We were all so young back then. What happened after 9/11 to the first responders, who spent weeks going through the toxic pile of rubble, was criminal. The head of the EPA came up to Ground Zero, & told them.. & the public, that the air was safe to breathe. It wasn’t. I know why Jon advocates for 9/11 First Responders, & veterans suffering from exposure to the toxic burnpits. I saw it all too bc I lived it w/ him. I’ve great admiration for him in many ways, most especially bc he’s such a good human being.
I love that the main cast of the Daily Show w/ Jon are all still good friends, doing what they love. They deserve it. They’re still all brilliant. 💓. I’ll always love these guys.
    I remember both

Sadly that is just a time period thing, toxic burnpits were the last thing on peoples minds and they didn't know any better when breathing it in. A whole city fell to pieces, saving lives and rebuilding was more important to those people in that moment. Today they would over protect you because children grow up coddled and can't be bothered to make any type of sacrifice big or small in order to help a neighbor. And hindsight us 20/20, Wearing a mask was not as acceptable or as common as it is today.

Yep, that's our Gov't, they tell you lies or nothing at all when they are placing your life/safety in danger.
Over 34 yrs ago the USN did not think asbestos was a big deal to us and now we are paying for it. 4 yrs after I got out they demolished the base, which was built during WW2. Asbestos was used greatly during that period. Asbestos ran rapid all over the base. I just wonder how many people suffered, perished behind this, and the Navy knew all along.
I'm glad JS has been a voice for the first responders and the military, I'm glad he cares.

I once had this very random moment in life, I think about seven years ago, that I was having a conversation with one of my school teachers about me not feeling happy in life. She asked me what would make me happy in this very moment if money or time wasn't an issue. I jokingly said that I would just quit school right now, buy myself a plane ticket to New York (I'm from the Netherlands) and see Jon Stewart's Daily Show to which she playfully responded with "so, what are you waiting for?"
Two days later I found myself sitting in the audience, watching Jennifer Aniston promoting her new film, Cake I believe it was called. It all felt so unreal that the moment I stepped out of the studio I joined the waiting line again to see the next show the very next day! This time Anne Hathaway would be the guest speaker and it took her maybe twenty seconds to accidentally spoil the complete ending of her latest movie which resulted in everyone just cracking up with no time left to actually talk about the film 😂
I don't think I've ever felt more complete in life and sometimes miss the old me. But to think that Jon quit not that long after also makes me feel like the luckiest guy alive!
