That is where I broke through a wall on my drummer life when I was younger!!!! It is So important to watch this video!!! I could do all kinds of drum covers, fills, solos, etc. But I wasn't growing as a drummer at that point? I could do rudiments, but working mostly my wrist. The rebound off your snare and toms can do so much work for you, and improve your speed, and get way more technique. It opened a whole new world of playing drums for me. Because after my technique changed and by adding a double bass pedal has made my drumming limitless!!!!
Absolutely! I got a point where I couldn’t figure out how to get “better” at all, whether it was playing faster or just sounding better in general, until I started considering these things! Happy drumming 👊🏻
Great video. I found somehow that I was playing french grip in one hand with german grip in the other! Working on being able to flexible enough to use eithe rin both handles. This is the best video I've seen on YT about stick holding.

One trick to learning to keep the back fingers on the stick is to play for a minute or so with the stick fulcrum between the first and middle fingers. Then go back to regular grip.
Silly question: may I ask you where are you from? I'm Italian, and I like different accents, so I'd like to "link" a particular accent's sound to the city/area it's from. To me, yours sounds like a Northern accent, but I have very little knowledge, all I know is "something from Liverpool - yes, The Beatles 😂😂😂 - to Scotland" 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️. Would you please help me? Haha great question! Stop half way between Liverpool and Scotland and you'll be pretty close! I live quite close to Newcastle. Not a full blown "Geordie" and I do try to tone down my North East accent so you can understand these videos 😆
Bob Brown said same thing about stick grip length. He said don't change to smaller sticks for softer sound, just hold them shorter so they have less forceful impact. Ha...I didn't think of that. I also accidentally found out if you removed nylon tip (Mine flew off) the wood tip inside is small therefore has very soft sound and the ping on the ride is nice and sweet
@@philthebeat The happy accident happened to me in early 80s. I've used that a lot for soft music. No I venture into Jazz I'd think it will give a nice ping sound. I practice a lot lately that my forearm this morning as mildly sore. I can't wait to see here it will take me
There's a pro name Reuben Spyker who teaches traditional grip fast roll 1 hand. I practice that too and I still have a long way to go back, since I've abandoned 50 years ago

Traditional grip isn’t my forte, but all of these points can still be applied just the same!
