It is not only your boat that you need to check for seaworthiness. Your trailer also has a very hard life being periodically dipped in salt water.
The things on your trailer that are most susceptible to saltwater damage are the electric lights and the brakes. Lights have some a long way in recent years with the advent of LED lights they are a lot less likely to suffer damage from salt water in my experience. Brakes on the other hand need constant monitoring.
Mechanical brakes in particular need to be checked regularly because the cable can stretch. Couple this with a tendency not to use stainless steel fittings and adjustment can be difficult.
You may notice that the brakes are less effective while you are driving but it is best to monitor them and adjust them before it gets to that point. For mechanical brakes it is a simple process provided nothing has gotten rusted up.

Mate from one Australian to another, you’re a bloody legend. I’m just about to replace the safety brake cable on my boat trailer (it is my first boat and trailer) and this video showed me everything I needed to know!!
Thank you. I'm glad it helped.
Great video - thanks
Thanks for watching!
Thx mate….installing them for the first time so really helpful
No problem 👍
Thanks mate
You're welcome.
At that short caliper leaver actuator bar, I found it better to attach the cable with a small 'D' shackle rather than weave the cable through the two holes in the leaver actuator bar. This allowed a more direct pull and made the final adjustment easier.
Thanks for the suggestion. Anything to make adjustment easier. I will have a look at that option next time I service them.
Thanks Great video on mechanical breaks. Can’t find the stainless adjuster on eBay - where did you find it ?
Thank you. I'm glad they aren't available on eBay any more. The one featured in that video was sold as stainless steel but it was not. Rusted out same as the first one.
Check out this video to see how I eventually solved the problem: th-cam.com/users/shorts7vUhduE18Ak
Tip: Spray Penetrol rust treatment on every part of your trailer eg. frame, springs, wheel hubs etc; repeat as required as time goes on. I have two forty year old boat trailers in original condition still looking like new, all OEM except wheel bearings and tyres. Cheers
Thanks, I will look into the Penetrol.
I spray the interior of the tubes with heavy lanoline which works a treat but leaves the trailer looking very dirty if used on the outside. I wash the trailer down immediately after every dip. I was spraying the adjustment with WD40 but that obviously wasn't good enough.
@@weFishAU Penetrol is a Taubmans' product, first made by the Flood Company in the USA before WW2. Unlike Fisholine this stuff has a paint drying additive, it also can be blended to turps based paints. Cheers
I've got to call into the hardware tomorrow so I will give it a try. Thank you.
@@weFishAU I find Penetrol in the spraycan is the easiest way to apply and never goes off. Also available in 500 Mls up to twenty litre cans but once opened will spoil in month if not used. Cheers
Thanks again, I will definitely look for the spray can. Much easier to get into a lot of places with a spray.
THANKS HELPED A LOT..AM IN N.S.W. DAVID..
Thank you. Glad to hear that.
may i know where to buy the break system I need to renew it
Hi. I got all the parts on eBay. If you look in the video description (click on More...) there are some links that will help. The top link has expired but the other 3 are still good.
