A1 explanations.... Finally, a great teacher, doing the correct procedure, all the steps in the right order, crystal clear comments and reasons why behind every step. Best video online ! Thanks John !
For salt water launches, every year service/check is a good idea. For fresh water launches, if you have replaced them and know all is good, your choice. I recommend if you buy a used trailer, replace with new hub kits to establish a base line, where you know what you have.
Seems it would be prudent to thoroughly clean and inspect the bearings, races and internals of the hubs with mineral spirits. Hard to see small pits with grease all over everything. I have Dexter Vault hubs which require a totally different procedure and special lube to service. They only need service about every 5 years. The additional seals in this design help prevent water intrusion.
Bearing packer tip; I use a drill press, without a drill bit in the drill chuck. Works like magic and I pack an inner on the bottom with the outer on top. I used to use a bench vise before I got my drill press and that works good also.
Great video! I actually prefer the twin cone shaped bearing packer that you attach your grease gun to. It forces the grease into the bearing much better and faster with little work.
Great video! Question: If I have the bearing buddy with the grease zerk should I have to do this procedure every year or just keep adding grease as needed? Thank you. At the end I did notice you do have the one with the grease zerk. Every year from what I take it. Is the Dexter bearings and seal universal for an EZ loader trailer? Thanks 👍🏻
My Stratos trailer has stainless wear rings where the seal rides , that’s where your pitting was ! Can you not install wear rings and avoid an axle replacement?
so the one with a Zerk fiting, i technically do not need to remove the bearing to repack the bearing pushing the old grease out...only if you suspect bearing failure...?
If a cotter key costs a dollar per, I would rather spend the dollar rather than spend a day looking for my wheel. But that's just me but I never reuse safety locks for wheel ends!
In his defense he did just redo bearings last year and it appeared that there was no moisture in the hub. But he really should have people about using a seal driver to keep it square going in
Never use solvent to clean bearings. Residue remains on the metal and can react with the grease. The new grease should push everything out of the bearing.
Especially for a boat trailer that goes in and out of the water all the time, water will still get into the grease over time and thin it out. Plus, that trailer is going to be sitting part of the year if you don’t use it all year-round so it’s not getting worked like a vehicle will. Grease sitting around from summer use to winter storage and back is not going to stay consistent.
@@Acelachaser1965 I guess another way to look at it is the tires are typically smaller than the vehicle tires, so they have to spin a lot faster. My small trailer is about a three to one ratio. So if I'm doing 50 miles an hour, that means my trailer tires are doing 150 mi an hour. The heat from that would wear out the grease fast I take it.
This is a simple job . Oh yah there's no mover shop classes in school . Teach a person to fix things, and they will never be stuck on the highway for a long period of time.
You have too many sponsors. Everyone knows your you can repack a bearing in the palm of your hand which is the proper way to pack it because you'll see it come out the other side note the top and everywhere else why don't you teach him how to do it
You just did a perfect video. I have all the confidence to do mine boat now... that is how it’s done. Thanks !
How did it come out? I thought I was ready but just ordered the emery cloth, grease press, & race press adapters.
for a trailer from 86 im blown away

Great explanations. As one teacher to another, good job.
Great how-to Video

Awesome very helpful.

Great video thanks for sharing. For the pitting on the axil, try using speedy sleeves to cover the pits on the seal surface.
Great video thanks!
AWESOME THANK YOU
What I didn't see was how you removed the rear seal. Could you please tell me how you got it out? Thanks.
Thanks John.
Are the bearings and seals trailer specific or universal? If not how do you determine the size ?
Where do I find the 3 step seal you talked about in the video? My bearing kit number is: Trailer Tech K 3500 EZ. Thanks
Thank you for this helpful video. Is it possible to use a Speedi-Sleeve to repair the axle where it is pitted instead of changing it?
Nice video thanks for doing this ❤🖖🏼🇺🇸
Install a Speedy Sleeve on that axle, and it will be good as new.
Unless it's an emergency repair, there isn't any reason to reuse a cotter pin.
Do Honda and Tohatsu have the same diagnostic connectors?

Bearing Buddies are a joke and should never be used.
What is the Grease from Harbor Freight STA-LUBE 3 Oz Marine Grease, NLGI Rating? Is it good?

What's to keep water from getting under the wear ring?

show me how you "popped out that inner bearing from the wheel
I think you should’ve
Completely clean all the old grease out, mixing grease is dangerous. Also you should have a preload on the Brng when replacing
Can't you change the bearing sleeve on the axle?
No sleeve on it.
@3:12 Everybody runs out to the garage to see what those old tubes of grease are rated at.
Should’ve thrown the buddy bearing away. When using them, you only grease the outer bearing. Use the grease zerk on the axle for both bearings.
Timken video shows 50lbs to set then loosen one full turn than tighten to 10 ft lbs
have you ever had the bearing race loose in the hub? and what did you do about it? new hub or Loctite?
Yeah, glue it. lol
This shouldn’t happen ever.
9:55 yes its exciting
Bad move -you should have cleaned all the old grease from the bearing with solvent, dried it, inspected it before adding new grease
In his defense he did just redo bearings last year and it appeared that there was no moisture in the hub. But he really should have people about using a seal driver to keep it square going in

Wouldn’t be scraping round the race with a screwdriver mind…
Why not show how to pack the bearings the old way!
Because… he doesn’t do it the old way. Plenty of videos out there for that.
Why do trailer bearings need to be repacked/replaced so often when I only need to repack my truck bearings every 80K miles or so?
Especially for a boat trailer that goes in and out of the water all the time, water will still get into the grease over time and thin it out.

Do you drive or park your truck in 14" of water?
@@trustme7731 No, but I don't drive or park my trailer and it either.
@@bkilpatr100 You might have mentioned that in your comment.
I surprised that nobody knows the easiest way to remove the grease seal. My method removes it 2 seconds and it can even be reused if necessary.
Yes that's what I'd like to know. How do you remove it? Thank you.
This is a simple job . Oh yah there's no mover shop classes in school . Teach a person to fix things, and they will never be stuck on the highway for a long period of time.
Why not just use break clean to clean the bearings and then repack the bearings.
The residue remains on the metal . It's kinda anti grease.
If you had cleaned your bearing properly before packing your grease you would not be mixing all the new grease together what a stupid move
Too loose. With the tire on the play or shake will feel like a loose bearing.

Have too much experience to believe that !!let it dry
Cotter pins are not made of gold! Replace the F’ing thing every time! Cheap equals problems!
