  • Hi All
I thought id give my views for what they are worth on the current trend for small capacity adventure style bikes. Are they completely what the market is looking for , or are we being sold a pup. my thoughts are around that usability for touring. hope you find it enjoyable. as always its done with a bit of humour, and its a personal view.

2 and a half minutes in. Here's the point "adventure bikes" started off as small(er) 500, 600 650 cc bikes. Basically scrambler versions of road bikes., until we have the over priced, overweight, current crop like your AT and the BMW et al which really only replaced the sport tourer segment. As someone who weighs 160lbs soaking wet I don't want to pick up one of those bloated turds even once. I was itching for a CRF 300 Rally but Covid and wait and wait until the supply chain fixes itself happened. I have now ordered a CFMOTO 450 MT. I am not bashing your bike have at it. What irritates me is all this bigger and more powerful BS used by manufacturers to sucker us into buying something we don't need or can really handle off road. The same thing has happened to the car industry where everyone has to have a wan*ing big SUV for that one time in a year they may need to pull a trailer. It's all BS. FWIW I toured all over europe in the late 70's early 80's on an RD350.

In Australia you can only go 110 klm hour so not much need for a big heavy bike . Test rode 450 mt yesterday has plenty enough power to cruise at that speed . And don't have to worry about riding on my own in case of dropping the bike

Only two bikes I am considering for my next bike. The CF450 and the Reiju 500. There is no need to pay more and I dont want the weight or size of an Africa twin or big BMW GS.

My Tuareg 660 is just 10kg heavier wet weight, with twice the power of the 450MT. I don't think the 450MT is the "Unicorn" , "Swiss Army knife" etc. I think the KTM 790 based MT-X, when it's released, could be if they price it aggressively enough.

Your front tire is mounted incorrectly.

I am considering the cf moto 700 mt as I agree a smaller engine like the 471cc in my cb500x can get buzzy on the freeway I have done big tours on the bike but know a larger engine would be more relaxed its hopefully not to heavy to move around think the 800 just too much and never do pillion my wife has her own bike. Have you tested a cf moto 700 ?

Nathan has just uploaded his first video on his new CF Moto 450 MT. It is an interesting first take given all the caveats that go with any first review. I would hope that those buying the CF 450/Himalayan 452 are aware of the limiting factors as far as all day motorway mile crunching, I am. I do think that the larger, heavy, less fuel efficient bikes are not for everyone and the best adventure bike is the one you are riding. Still looking at this sector of the market as it, to me, seems to suit my requirements. Thanks for you upload, interesting thoughts.

I have had the BMWs the GS series and I do love them. I have the 450NK now and it’s the same motor and transmission, they are fantastic on the interstate and I can ride it all day long.

Interesting points. I often wonder why companies do not use 6th gears as an overdrive for motorway chores.

Fellow CRF1000 owner (2016) bought a KTM 390 Adv to do a RTW trip in a few years time. I could pick up the Honda once a day when dropped off road, but if I was to drop it repeatedly or get it stick in deep mud, it would kill me. The lil KTM is much easier to manhandle.

An objective view and in some points I agree.

As they say what goes up most come down, In my case I went from a 1150gsa to a regular 1200gs, to a v strom 1000 to an f800gs, and I agree that the bigger bikes are way more comfortable and they create a feeling that you are in the bike and that is a great feeling that you are in your own little space, but unfortunately somewhere down the line those bikes will start to feel heavy, and those who feel that way they will be willing to sacrifice something to ride a bike that is more manageable for them

Look, kind sir. Respectfully. Regarding people being drawn to ADV bikes because of the 'style' & not the 'adventure', a Panigale fitted with knobby tires does not make an 'adventure bike'. I suppose that would be enough on easy dirt/gravel paths, but that may be less adventurous than some are hoping for. Maybe augmenting the knobby tires with taller forks, rear shocks, & taller/wider handlebars might do it for some. Still, in the pantheon of motorcycle aesthetics, ADV bikes are not high: they appear plainly utilitarian, though that isn't bad.

In the 80s I sold early computers, new models were coming out regularly, people would come in and say ‘should I wait for the latest greatest?’ I would always say you could but then there will be a better one around the corner and you will never buy one to actually use……

Seem the cfmoto do almost 100mph so I think they will cruise at 70mph no problems
