    Who is Ron Spomer
    For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

    Stick with the 7 rem mag, easier to find after the prc fuss is over. Even my local has limited types of prc but plenty different types of rem mag

      @@chin203 in America I can understand that but here in Australia (i didnt mention sorry) a lot of these rounds and guns only trickle in. We understand you guys have lots of different rules for hunting which require different rounds. People here will buy it don't worry about that.

    One point that is sometimes overlooked: On these cartridges that are optimized for really long bullets and have really straight sidewalls, feeding can become an issue, and also damaging or bending the bullet in the case. With more bullet hanging out, there is more to damage or bend the case mouth. Also, the less tapered, the more chance it won't feed well. The 7 mm Rem Mag, 30-06, and 300 Win Mag are all pretty tapered and all have less bullet hanging out which I think is better for a hunting situation. For targets, it doesn't matter nearly as much.

    • @Tactics_Actual
      @Tactics_Actual ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s still the same length bullet and the bullet is also inserted to the same depth as per spec so one will not “bend” easier than the other, just looks that way because the reduced cartridge *shows* more bullet

    • @66smithra
      @66smithra ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tactics_Actual No the bullets will bend more easily because the lever (the protruding part of the bullet) is longer. Believe me, I've done it with the 6.5 Creedmoor. It definitely doesn't feed as well as something like the 300 WM or the 30-06.

    I have both, I reload and have factory ammo. I hunt deer and hogs on my farm. Shots are from 100-500 yards. I have taken probably a hundred head with them. It's only my opinion that there is not enough difference to worry about. Both shoot great, mild recoil and accurate. 100-500 yards they are both about equal.

    This may look good on paper, but Reloading Weatherby channel has shown taking the .270 Win, with the same issues, and he realoaded Nosler Accubond 165 grain ABLR Bonded long range bullets and they shot perfect. He just has to dial in the powder and a few other things to turn the rounds he reloads for long range into a sub moa loading.
    So I am going to say yes it helps to have the lower shoulder height and more neck in the 7 PRC, but it is not necessary. The 7mm Rem Mag can be loaded with the same exact bullets and with some range work and tweaking, be just as accurate, and deadly with these new long range bullets that are hot on the market. The 7mm Rem Mag is still the winner. Especially since it's everywhere on all shelves, and is supported to death in every manner in the firearms market and community. I live in a serious gun town and while I see all these new Nosler, PRC, Western offerings in rifles, I do not see any ammo support for them. You can buy a lovely 6.8 Western, 6.5-378 WBY, 6.5 PRC, 7mm or .300 RUM, but you are ordering in ammo, and at full market prices. No sales, very little selection to choose from. You have to buy what you can get, pay an arm and a leg for it, shoot it, and only then after you have all the dies and components to reload...then reload what you actually might prefer, or need for that particular rifle you own. Because no rifle company, is producing a more accurate bullet that is better than a lifelong reloader can reload. Add in the savings as well and you have more reason to buy the cheaper round to feed the pigs, and load them up with these new bullets on the market.
    We're talking splitting hairs for the little bit of difference the longer neck is going to do. Target shooters and hunters in the field have proven it so. History of long range sniper kills in war have shown bullet design means little in the hands of determined man. So have tens of thousands of videos of people pulling off insane long shots, with very old rifle calibers. Sometimes in very old rifles too, with pitted worn barrels. It is the person behind the rifle, combined with just plain good ammo that make the magic happen.
    There are enough new cartridges on the market. A shooter nowadays has no hope of every owning all the current market calibers anymore, or even dream of shooting them all. It used to be around 20 calibers you had to aquire to have the cream of what was out there to buy a rifle in. Now it's just nuts. A bit of improvement here and there, for what? 100 FPS??? Or 100 Ft. Lbs at muzzle, which is not worth talking about at practical hunting ranges. The hype does not live up to what these cartridges do, compared to what is already available, doing the same job quite effectively.

  • @ewathoughts8476
    @ewathoughts8476 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Geez, your understanding is so poor. By making the case fatter although shorter, the volume for propellant is maintained while allowing longer bullets to be seated to the same overall length, and the shank will not have to lie below the shoulder/neck donut allowing a more uniform bullet release, thus improving velocity SD/ES numbers. With straighter side walls however, there can be more chambering problems requiring better magazine design. The PRC design exhibits extended case life if you are going to reload cartridges. The belted designs however allows its use in break actions and bolt actions while the PRC would be difficult to use in a break action (double barrel type) of firearm.

    Have hunters all of a sudden been having problems killing what they are hunting with the 7 mag and that's why they came out with the PRC. Seems like when it comes to these new calibers they're doing a lot of fixing where things weren't broken. Under the disguise of long range shooting, not many hunters are hunting at or over 1000yds. These guys just sound like bandwagon jumpers.

      Immensely so. I've been all over Canada and the USA. I check all the stores when I am in a city or town and what I have seen is the support for all these new cartridges is very limited. We're talking available only in the largest, most financially successful gun stores in that city or town. You will not have a chance of finding rounds for most of these new calibers as soon as you hit anywhere close to where you can actually hunt, or get away from a large city. Country gun shops carry mostly the 20 most popular calibers of the last 100 years. The newest caliber you'll find on their shelves will most likely be 6.5 Creedmoor and 7mm-08. Even the WSM line is hard to find, and it's been out over 20 years.
      None of these new cartridges are going to dethrone, 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag, 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Win, 7mm-08, .270 Win, .30-06, .25-06 Rem, .243 Win, because they are available everywhere, and they work. They don't just work, they work so well that if they didn't work, it was the shooter, not the round that was the problem. Stick with the most popular calibers. You'll spend much more time shooting, rather than looking for ammo. These new calibers are not only hard to find ammo for, it's ridiculously expensive when you do find it. They are all at this point in time best kept for serious reloaders that know what they are doing.

    How much does BC really matter at ethical hunting distances? There are other things you can do that increase hit probability more than a high BC bullet does. For ELR competition and such, sure it is important to have the higher BC. Maybe better of practicing and learning to read wind better. Just my 2 cents.

    Im just not seeing anything worth while in these new prc cartridges. That short wide shouldered case looks cool but is less than ideal for proper feeding. Some manufacturers are having issues with their rifles feeding them reliably. You are cutting your magazine capacity and gaining nothing in performance. Guys bc doesn’t really matter till out past 500 and who is going to take a shot at game at that distance? Just stick with the old stuff or go wildcat if you reload.
