  • Summer Bloom Recipe Changes
Hello again everyone! My goodness things have been crazy!! I've had way too many things going on and way to little focus. I think this happens every summer, my head gets full of squirrels and shiny objects lol. I've done several recordings, mostly of failures that you may never see because they were so tragic. When summer came rolling in a month early, my bloom paints started changing dramatically. I went from productive, beautiful results to horrible whats-in-the-world-is-happening results. It took me the better part of a month to figure out what was causing the problems and only a few days to fix them. During that period, I figured I'd just have to go on bloom hiatus for the summer and do other things. That notion created a whole host of scattered thoughts and directions but I will cover that in upcoming videos. My original thought was to go back to regular fluid art for a few months. One thing led to another and created my next bright idea which I will be releasing in a multi-part series starting later this week. But before that happens, I will do a very special segment celebrating our country's birthday! That'll be a quick little video coming out on the 4th so stay turned!
In today's video, which I am rushing to get uploaded, I am experimenting with a reformulated bloom recipe in hopes of conquering the slime monster that's taken over my studio. Spoiler alert! Varnish can be your friend or your foe and, in my case being desert dwelling, it was my foe. This is a longish video because I wanted to bring you along for the entire journey, only cutting out unbeneficial fluff. I talk a lot lol. Just be patient and follow along while I work the bugs out and arrive at this stunning watercolor bloom with gorgeous transparencies and dimension. I am departing from my usual bloom recipe for the short run, until my regular recipe works again. If this one keeps working I will stick with it because less product and formulation is always a good thing.
I am using PPG Multipro 47-3110 for this bloom for the same reason I stopped using it, it's thinner than it used to be. I managed to get rid of the bubbles in this can finally by letting it set for 6 weeks. Thinner is better when you're working in air conditioned spaces.
Instead of using JoSonja gloss varnish to wet my pigments I used JoWa, a 1 part JoSonja to 8 parts distilled water. Just enough to make a slurry of pigment then straight Behr 3300 untinted deep base 3. My tube paint recipe has changed as well: 1 part JoSonja to 5 parts Behr 3300 untinted base 3. I barely need to add water to freshly mixed paints, only after they've sat several days or get low in the container.
My cell activator is unchanged: aussie floetrol and amsterdam tube paints. In this bloom it was Amsterdam deep gold with a few drops of Golden quinacradone nickel azo gold.
My bloom colors are Amsterdam carmine red, reflex rose and a mix of light gold with Arteza pearl rose to create a rose gold. My 2 pigments were This Little Piggy ballgown and golden peach.
All of my art projects are for sale and, if you'd like to purchase, you can find them here:

Totally agree about having to alter your plans sometimes. That final piece turned out beautiful with that composition! I’m glad to hear the summer mix is working. This is my first summer since blooming so I’ve been trying to adjust, too. It dried beautifully!!!!

Thanks! My first summer blooming too, other types of fluid art aren't effected by seasonal changes cuz they don't use housepaint. Never had issues til now. Try eliminating varnish in a few paints and pigments, see what happens. I'm happy with the mix!

    Very pretty.
A way you can fix the AC problem (if your vents are in the ceiling) I bought magnetic ac deflector shields at Lowes. You still get the ac, just not blowing right on you.
    Works wonders 🙂

Thank you! I have the ceiling vent redirected and keep the portable on very low while I'm in the studio. Neither are set very low so it's still fairly warm. It's set just high enough to keep me from melting lol
