NEW type of bloom swipe, hot off the spinner! The starfish bloom swipe!!

  • Hello and Welcome to subs and newcomers alike! I finally managed to get ahead of the paint formula, desert climate and cell activator issues that
sucked up a lot of time, materials and brain cells! Yay!! It's been really challenging since this is my first Las Vegas summer doing primarily bloom
painting. I've done plenty of other types of fluid art in our summer weather with no issues whatsoever and resin loves the desert heat(you just have to
add a little humidity artificially!). So since June started off way hotter than we're used to and May was no walk in the park, I've realized housepaints
are very heat sensitive. I've also had a lot going on preparing for this Michael's in store promotion which will be in the books tomorrow, June 15th so
if you're in the neighborhood, the North 5th St location is where I'll be from 1-4pm.
This started out as an idea to use a round canvas but not make a bloom halo. I wanted to swipe, sunflower style, but I didn't want sunflower colors.
As it begins to take shape, I realized it was very starfish like in essense so I've dubbed it the starfish bloom swipe. Although I'm not 100% satisfied
with the final results, it's a jumping off point. I will definitely do another one in the near future!
My bloom paint recipe has changed significantly due to formula changes with Glidden Premium semi gloss untinted base 3, Behr 8300 and something
is definitely going on with PPG Multipro. Either that or it's the climate here but I can't get the bubbles out of it even when it hasnt even been shaken.
Ever! And as my blooms dry, bubbles come up from the depths of pillow and ruin the dried results, yuck. The good news is, although Behr in general
and 3300 in particular are very much slimier than what I'm used to, I've managed to get the ratio of Josonja varnish done to where it works well. I'm
not a huge fan of how it slightly dulls the pigments but it'll get me through until I can find something affordable that works well. Dynasty and Infinity
will not be it. $70 a gallon is out of the question! What I am finding works well for white and pastel bases is Sherwin Williams Extra White color 2 go.
In fact, pretty much all the color 2 go is working very well for me right now, even the deep base and dark colors are thicker than previously. I need a
particular consistency for the pillow to behave as expected and this is working right now. For bloom paints, 1 part Josonja to 5 parts Behr 3300 with
JoWa to thin(1 part Josonja to 8 parts distileld water). My cell activator issues were due to thickening upon sitting after mixing. Aussie floetrol doesn't
like out climate either I guess so I keep the bottle handy for when the ca thickens on me. It needs to run off the stick for the count of 5 before it
drips. Ok, now that I've covered all the chemisty and climate resolutions, on to the usual closing paragraph. Thanks for being here, thanks for the
support and let me know if you have questions!

Thank you! My paint corral is 30" diameter and I made it when I couldn't find what I wanted to fit my narrow table. I cut a 30" diameter round out of 3/4" plywood and 3-5" wide strips of 1/8" plywood(which I soaked in my bathtub overnight to make flexible). I just line it with 2mil plastic to contain the flying paint!

Really pretty, you mentioned during the video if you spin too hard, it would warp, can you explain what you mean by that?

Thank you💕 Yes, I spin more slowly so that I can control how the paint moves outward. Having more pillow in the middle to cause the design to open up makes it precarious to keep it centered. As the pillow moves from the middle, it will warp your cells like crazy. I tested this by adding a regular mouth blown bloom to the center of a bloom halo before spinning. It was almost impossible to control the warping and get enough paint off! These halo shaped designs are an intricate dance with centrifugal force!
