  • As the host of his very own weekly Beats 1 online show It’s Electric! on Apple Music, Lars celebrates the reissue of Master of Puppets with two upcoming very special shows with some very notable guests. The two-part series was recorded at the band’s most recent European tour stop in Antwerp, Belgium and Lars welcomes back to the show James, Kirk and Rob to cover all things …Puppets, discussing the first riffs recorded on a Fostex to James’ lyrical influences with many, many more stories in between. Traveling from places far and wide, Lars is also joined by the album’s co-producer and engineer Flemming Rasmussen and mixer Michael Wagener for their tales from Sweet Silence Studio in Copenhagen.
Part One of the conversation is available on demand to Apple Music subscribers: apple.co/_ItsElectricAOD
Part Two of the conversation will air on Sunday, November 19th at 3 PM LA/6 PM NYC/11 PM LDN. Listen live for free. Otherwise, Apple Music subscribers can listen to the show on demand: apple.co/beats1onair

12:54 James’ smile here is perfect. It shows that he appreciates Robert, and that he is grateful to know him. Because Even though he still misses Cliff, and playing live with Jason, Robert is still a friend, bandmate, and more than all, family. And it Also shows that he likes that Even though Robert wasn’t there, he still talks about his bands record, and that is exactly what Cliff would have wanted, for metallica to be one big, happy family.
Same with Lars’ stare at 13:03

hearing them talk about Cliff is such a bittersweet thing , my old man told me back in '84 he met cliff and how he thought cliff was gonna be some egotistical jerk like most popular metalheads at that time , but instead he said cliff gave him a beer and talked for a couple minutes about led zeppelin , story gives me the good chills every time I hear it , RIP Mr.Burton .

I've been trying to put that into words myself for many years and explain why Puppets is as Puppets is. Kinda sad when they were talking about Cliff and Orion and all that part, you can still hear a bit of hurting there in James's voice when he talks about him. To this day I don't think most fans realise just how devistating that must have been to these guys. It's a real credit to Cliff that his contribution to their overall sound is still audible through all these years even with some of the more drastic changes in song writing approaches on different records. Credit to Jason and Rob for being able to come into that at the points they did and deal with it. Especially Jason though. Couldn't have been easy. I'd love to listen to this same sort of discussion about Justice actually. I bet that one is a little more awkward in parts... Like the mixing choice 😂. I think I get why did what they did though.

    • @alexanderrojas7945
      @alexanderrojas7945 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

In a big part it's because they're aware that with Cliff they would have overcome everything they did after he passed away. Cliff was a very open musician and would surely have liked many of the changes the band made, but he would have taken it to another level thanks to his musical knowledge. I suppose that James, Lars and Kirk when they're talking about Cliff must think about how many amazing things would have happened with him in the band.

I think Flemming is a little behind the times. They should go to an established modern day metal engineer/producer like Andy Sneap, becasue he genuinely loves the 80s thrash metal scene. The guy they have in now (Greg Fidelman) just doesn't seem to know how to do a metal production. He's already given them a disaster when he mixed Death Magnetic AND Lulu, and while HTSD wasn't the worst production i'd ever heard, it sounded off - like a rock production trying to me a metal one. The guitar tone was too flat and the drums just sounded weird.

Hmm, I get what you're saying, but have you heard of Evile's first album, Enter The Grave?
The album was produced by Flemming. He does some pretty top quality production there too. It's nice and raw, similar to the late 80's with a little touch of modern metal production quality.

And boy has Rob gone on and just aced it and then some. Age brings maturity, this clip evidence and a reminder of such. Great stuff, the amazing bak catalogue and history of one of the biggest and best metal bands on display.

Cliff made Metallica the band that it was and it's so sad we lost him so young cause I know in my heart that if he never died that they would've been even greater and never would've had such pedestrian albums like St Anger and as pretty good and popular as the Black Album was, it was still a huge step down from Ride and Puppets, Cliff was like a Metal Beethoven, he made it a Symphony of Metal, as great as rest of them may be non of them could/can orchestrate music like Cliff could, he'll always be missed along with the music he never got to help Metallica write

I hope they do more these long format sessions. Loved hearing them remember cliff. And it’s cool to have robs perspective as a fan before he was a member.

The first Metallica song I ever heard was Battery. Side one, song one. My friend Leon and I played the whole first side, flipped the tape, played side two and sat there looking at each other in disbelief. We played it over and over that evening. This was a turning point for me. Music to me was never the same. Long live Metallica!!!✌️

BTW if you want to listen to that Sanitarium and Orion mesh song, you can find it on TH-cam, it’s called “Only thing”. It’s only a demo but still pretty cool to see how it could’ve gone

now that i've watched it a second time from that exact time stamp it really looks like James is just having a dig at him about not remembering riffs and that they must not have been very good if he couldn't remember them.

Wow, seems like James is totally doing a dig at Kirk here 4:50 since Kirk lost his iphone while making the Hardwired album which had all his demos on it and he couldn't remember anything, so he basically didn't contribute to any of the song writing.

If I remember well, Kirk saod that the demos he lost wasn't very good.

HarvesterOfShadows James has clarified in a recent interview that Kirk had some personal stuff to deal with during the writing of the album and that it’s up to Kirk to talk about it.

Kari C orion was amazing to me when I first heard it. I heard master of puppets pre-internet and I thought that one solo sounded odd. Then when I found out it was cliff, I was AMAZED!!! I just wish I had been a teen to see metallica live during their master of puppets era. Metallica is STILL my favorite band to this day. Alice in chains is nearly tied. That show where james sings 'Would' was AWESOME. Anyway, Love seeing female rockers..keep rocking!!! :)

Like most of the Metallica fans out there, I can never forget the chills, goosebumps and the feelings it gave me when I first listened to those songs on MoP.
It was autumn time and together with my family we had travelled to a remote place for a weekend vacation. Leaves were falling and all that orange/brown/red mixture of colors of the forest would blend so well with the concept art of MoP.
I'd bought the MoP in cassette format and it was then when I heard the whole album for the first time.
Together with the atmosphere and surroundings that I was in, I was also quite messed up in the head. I was like 12 years old and didn't know what to do, what to expect from life (still have no idea) and I was feeling rebellious, kind of raging and so... But those riffs, drums, melodies, lyrics etc... they all came to my aid and have been such a shoulder to rest on in times when I felt weak.
And that middle/interlude section of MoP song... This alone shows how these guys have felt about the music and artistry and put the strength of their imagination into their material at the time of writing the songs. That particular part all in a sudden hits you in the face and you can imagine hands from the skies, from within darkness or from nowhere pulling strings of a weakened, sad, broken puppet, just before the song reaches to a sweet climax where it explodes into its full potential with giving you eargasm until the closing bits.
For emotional people like me, that particular song has those up and down moments that throws you into a turbulence from which you actually survive, ironically, with the help of the same song again.
Since those years, I have listened to many great songs, bands and lots of extreme stuff like death metal but none of them (except Death) gave me such strong feelings and reflections.
Thank you MetallicA, for being a driving force in our lives and for participating in our precious memories! \m/
PS. As a man growing up to this age with the absence of a father figure in my life, I can only sympathize what James had gone through in the past. Apart from what he created with MetallicA, this fact alone makes him a heroic icon for me.
